Hi,

I recently felt the urge to dust off my 4 in 1 boxset of Baldur's Gate and play it again. Although this time I thought I'd try some mods to improve the experience. Luckily I came across this guide and it looked great so I decided to follow it.

www.destructoid.com/the-weekend-modder-s-guide-baldur-s-gate-1-2-222096.phtml

I followed all the steps, except for five because I wasn't interested in that mod upon reading the notes for it and didn't want to alter the game too much, after all I haven't finished the first Baldur's Gate, and thus never played the second. Things seemed to go fairly smoothly until I got an error pertaining to the latter part of step one, which was to run each of the games once. It was due to TotSC coming with the US patch, so I downloaded the international one and ran it and was able to get past that. Everything else went off without a hitch until it actually came time to run the game. I was asked to insert the ToB expansion CD, upon doing so though it appeared to load up only Baldur's Gate 2 and the expansion, with no visible option to play the first Baldur's Gate.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong in the installation, but as I said, I followed all the instructions and took my time doing so, reading things over. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I custom installed everything, selecting every file, and did so to a new folder in my C: drive I created as opposed to program files. Upon doing some research of my own regarding this issue I thought perhaps some tweaking of the ini file may fix it, namely the file path to each CD, for which mine look a little odd. I'll copy them below.

HD0:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\

CD1:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\English\\;C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD1\\

CD2:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD2\\;C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\English\\;C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD2\\

CD3:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\English\\;C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD3\\

CD4:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\English\\;C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD4\\

CD5:=C:\\RPGs\\BG2\\CD5\\

I'm hoping I won't need to perform a clean installation, although I'm under the impression I will. Nevertheless, it won't do me much good if I don't know what the issue is, or how to avoid it in future.

Just to clarify, my wish is in fact to be able to play the game without the use of any of the game CDs, as opposed to getting it to work with them. That said, if it comes down to it I'll just have to put up with it, after all, the game wasn't bought as a decoration.

I hope I've provided all the necessary information to aid in determining the root of the problem and coming up with a solution.

I would very much appreciate any and all help anyone could offer me.

Thanks in advance.

You refer to both the US and international patch - these are not the same and I wonder if that might have caused a problem. Which patch you need depends on the original game version you had. The patches can be found at:
http://www.sorcerers...index_misc.php.

Discussion of how to play without a CD is not allowed on this forum, although I can say that the version of the game you can download from GOG comes fully patched and with no copyright protection (which personally I thought was worth the extra money, although I still have my old discs as well)..

That may be the case. I find it odd that the game would come with the US patch given that it was purchased in the UK. I was able to play the game without any issues when I first got it, although I don't think I had installed TotSC back then which might explain things.

I see, I wasn't aware of that. Well, it was simply a matter of convenience, as I had to use the discs when I played before and I found it to be a nuisance. The only way to lessen that would be to leave the disc in for prolonged periods of time which I don't want to do. However, as I said I'd be willing to do so if need be.

I've heard of that version of the game, and have a friend who has purchased other games from GOG including Icewind Dale. Mind you, he's had some issues with that, plus I think I recall reading somewhere that there were issues with modding the GOG version of Baldur's Gate as well.

To be perfectly honest, if I'm going to have to fork out more cash then I'd rather just wait for the enhanced edition which isn't far off the horizon now. So, I think that's what I'll do.

Thank you very much for your help, and sorry for the late reply.

I'm pretty sure there are no problems with modding the GOG version. My own copy is heavily modded and I know a number of other regular posters on the forum are in the same position. I suspect you have read something about the D&D anthology sold by, e.g Gamers Gate, which does have modding problems.

Having said that by all means wait for the enhanced edition. I will be interested myself to see how well that works!
