I found this presentation by Thomas Grip, one of the Designers of Amnesia, to be fascinating. I would highly recommend watching the whole thing.

I enjoyed hearing his explanations for why eliminating combat, death, and competitive mechanics made Amnesia the scariest game ever made even though that is counter intuitive to what most game developers would think.
I think there is a lot that a developer like Bioware could learn from Frictional Games(the company that made Amnesia). I would love to play a story focused game that focused on character development where combat was not a major game mechanic.
