I played: NWN, Kotor, Jade Empire, ME entire saga... DAO and DA2.

DRAGON AGE ORIGINS:

THE LONGEST.
THE BEST STORY.
7 DIFFERENT PROLOGUES.
MANY CHOICES.
THE BEST ATMOSPHERE.
THE BEST (AND DEEPEST) COMPANIONS EVER MADE IN A GAME.
BEST AND (AND DEEPEST) LOVE INTERESTS.
Image IPBMORRIGANImage IPB
BEST SOUNDTRACK.
THE BEST ENDING(S).

I LOVE IT! I playied it entirely (with Expansion and all DLCs) 4 times until now, will have one more game vey soon.
Yes, Combat system is boring... but it is the best game I ever playied in my life. Congrats BioWare... try to make more games like this!!! Please!!!

Not just one of the best BioWare games but one of the best RPGs ever, easily on par with classics like Fallout and Planescape Torment.

I so agree.

I did 6 playthroughs of DA:O and am planning to do another after a year away.

I only played through  DA2 once....that says it all.

Sure it was a great game, but BG 1 & 2 is better imo.

Nah. I played BG and while they are amazing and great RPG's, I think Origins is far better when it comes to gameplay, story and companions. DA:O is not only BW's best game IMO but it is also one of my best games.

I only play DAO now when I'm either extremely bored or want a good save to import into DA2, the story is passable but very generic making it rather boring and the combat is just painfully and tediously slow and the mages animations are just awful much prefere the mage animations and the rogue animations in DA2.

The combat in DA2 looked prettier, but it defiiently wasn't better.  You could hardly plan anything, cause you were constantly taping A (or clicking).

And why do you need a good save to import?  Almost nothing you do in Orgins affects DA2

Actually it does but its mainly in terms of sidequests but thats to be expected since as the second game is set in the free marches which is a seperate kingdom from ferelden in anycase since this blight was contained withing ferelden and was stopped before most other nations were even aware of it it would be unlikely to have any effect in any nation/kingdom beyond Ferelden.

Sure setting up choke points and kill zones in the 1st game was fun for about 5 mins then became tedious and repeat ad nausem after that, true i didnt like how the wave mechanic was implemented in DA2 like the thugs jumping down from roofs 80ft plus of the ground however DAO wasnt really all that different they just hid the wave spawns better behind hills, trees buildings etc

I completely agree with everything the OP has said. I can't speak for the entire of the Bioware games, having only played Dragon Age Origins and II and a little bit of Mass Effect, but in terms of RPG games in general, it's up there with the best games of all time!

Plus it has Alistair <3<3... before he got fat....

It's a good game, but nowhere near those classics like Baldur's Gate saga (especially BG2 with Throne of Bhaal expansion, which is the best BW game by far), Planescape Torment, Fallout 1&2, Arcanum..

Combat in DAO may be better than some of those titles (especially Torment and Arcanum), but other aspects just lack the imagination to compete with them..

lol, i'm glad this thread exists....I was just playing mass effect 3, which is a great game, but suddenly had a massive urge to play DAO which is installing as we speak (i felt the need to google 'dragon age origins best game ever' whilst it does that). Its definetely my favourite game of all time..Deus ex comes close, but i've never played a game with such well written characters. The story might be a bit cliche, but its the best storytelling in a game i've ever played.

It was also my first 'real' rpg, and once i got the hang of it the combat blew me away...it took me a while to get to grips with how complex the game is, but once i did i got completely lost in the game mechanics, having the head outside for a smoke to properley think through every skill/attribute/talent point :)

DA2 combat was more responsive and easier on the eye, but i wish they had left in the block/miss animations/mechanics....i loved watching my dex based rogue slowly transforming throughout the game into a tank as he became the duelist who was never there when the opponent struck, and who always landed his blows...awesome game

Having played a lot of RPGs over the years, I have to say DAO really worked for me... BG and Planescape were really great (and will always be) but hats off to DAO. (I'll mention UltimaVII too) DA2 was technically excellent (better than DAO actually) but the story just didnt gel... and in the RPG genre thats well, a fail...

Yeah it is the best Bioware game so far, it's a goddamn shame they used that to trick people in to buying DA:2 and than after receiving negative feedback they screwed up ME:3 the in the same exact way.

I wasn't too fond of this game for the first time I played but after the first playthrough I started a new game immediately. I can't pick the best Bioware game ever made because it would be like choosing the best one from own children but definitely DA:O is one of my favourites <3

DA:O is still awesome to playthrough. Though I could never pick a favourite Bioware game.

I'm tempted to agree because the combat is stupid by design and not ineptitude or laziness, and it didn't look bad either. Still, because of that it's definitely not the most enjoyable.

Respectfully, I'd have to disagree, DA:O is cool and all, but, in my personal opinion it's not the best game Bioware has ever made, I prefer to play Kotor waaaay more, and, I personally enjoy it's story more than DA:O, and I still think that Mass Effect is better too, but that's just my thoughts, as I said, I wouldn't call DA:O Their best game...though, if Kotor was remade with nowadays graphics, but same story etc as it was, alot of people would vote for it,

I haven't played a lot of BioWare games, but DA:O is more complex than the Mass Effect series - although I did enjoy the first one.

The overall plot - I'm about 2/3 through, and it appears to be derivative LotR stuff: evil possessed antagonists, immortal elves in decline and dwarfs living underground. I like the political infighting layer though. Some of the quests seem reminiscent of TES IV.

Combat - a bit tedious. Open a door and everything in a mile radius mobs you. Occasionally my 'passive' mage will inexplicably run into the thick of the mob so some micromanaging is required. It isn't very interesting to me really, just something to get through.

I've got to give some credit to the level design, which doesn't get mentioned much. I walk around when I'm exploring and take a good look at the scenery, which is really well laid out out with some lovely textures and lighting effects. Each area is unique, interesting and detailed.

Overall I'm having a lot of fun and it's a good game, and I like the fact your actions have lasting consequences. As recent RPGs go it's up there near the top, but I found Fallout: New Vegas more involving, in depth of writing and game play. The FO:NV DLC were superbly written, and I guess I just find the whole fantasy genre a bit cheesy to go back to.

DAO is far better than BG2, KOTOR, or any other Bioware games. Until DAO, they didn't falter and tried to appeal to 'larger' audience. DAO was an absolute, final, beautiful synthesis of what Bioware claimed their game developing philosophy to be, which was tainted after EA took over.
