I always was more of a shooter person Duke3D - Quake 1/2 - Unreal etc later on i found myself playing RTS(Warcraft1/2/3 - C&C)/FPS mostly - Lan party.
Then some day i stumbled onto Spellforce, never heard of it and the reviews weren't half bad downloaded the demo and i enjoyed it, i guess this would be my first real contact with a RPG(+RTS) And the main aspect i liked was the 'group' you travelled with, sometimes giving a cutscene and them talking and such, nothing much really compared to that for me.
Later on WoW came out (2004?) and played that for years basicly ignoring everything around, sometimes looking at something and quickly returning to WoW. You could refer to WoW as the Darkages.
(None of the games are in any 'order' if at all, so don't mind that)
Sure i heard about Mass Effect and Dragon Age but never really looked in to it, never saw it and no one i knew talked about it. Until Dragon Age 2 came out, read some previews and decided to get it on release day and damn was i impressed, didn't have a clue what was going on or anything but hell it was fun. With DA2 i got a ME2 key and what the hell let's try ME2 and guess what ME2 was amazing... better then DA2 (more variety and lazers pewpew).
Decided to buy ME1 (steam 3.75 euro - Later i bought ME3 also) and DAO Ultimate Edition but then came the shock..
At first i was like 'wtf is this 5H1T?!' DAO felt slow, less action but gave it a try none the less.
Now i still like DAO+DLC/Addons better then DA2 most of us know the reasons all to well.
DAO for me is the best RPG ever, sure i've played quite alot of RPG's during my 'gaming years' from really old ones to new titles like Skyrim/Kingdoms of Alamur Reckoning/Two Worlds/etc even though some of these titles had some things which were better compared to DAO the overall 'package' made DAO the best. And after playing DAO i was wondering what the hell went through BioWares minds when they made DA2..
Best games for me atm.
1:DAO
2:ME1
3:ME2
4:Freelancer (If you don't know it look for it).
5:Skyrim
6:ME3
7:Spellforce 2+addons
8:Warcraft 3+addons
And quite a few more no one is intrested in.

When I consider the amount of sheer freedom given toward building Origins' characters and companions, the blissful lack of restriction, and the huge scope for customisation against the artificial limitations, and narrowed choices imposed upon DA II characters and companions I'd say Origins wins hands down! It's not even a fair contest... rather like pitting a Formula One race car, driven by Sebastian Vettel, against a seven-year-old Skoda driven by Stan Grundy from Stockport.

I just don't understand how anyone could think the combat system in Origins is boring? I suppose when compared to DA II it seems slow... admittedly this may be just me... but I'd personally regard this as a positive. DA II's combat (to me at least) seemed wildly exaggerated, cartoon-like, over the top in every way. Origins' seems far more realistic, far grittier as if you were putting real effort into battling your foes.

They don't like it because they want to play more action games with a set PC. RPGs should not go down that route.

Some gamers prefer the jrpgs that have set protagonists, no exploration or customization, no inventory, a more linear story....and yes, outlandish-anime combat.
I had basically given up on rpgs on consoles until Origns came along. It was definitly the most succesful wrpg brought to console (until Skyrim of course). Just think what have been the fan base if they continued the Origins model while at the same time implementing the import consequences. DA2 could have sold 8-9 million instead of losing 3 million fans.

--6 person party = more customization
--more classes and races = more customization
--just more depth in general
What I preferred about DA:O:
--better combat (I can't stand D&D rules... resting, etc)
--better graphics
--tactics (yeah, some people say you're lazy if you don't micromanage every char for every battle, but I like to plan out my party without necessarily having to click the same button 8 million times against trivial enemies)
--no inane D&D rules
Basically, if BG2 could be remade with the modern mechanics of DA:O while retaining its superior depth, that would be the best game.
But taking the games strictly as they are, DA:O is undoubtedly the better game.

However, if there ever was a true spiritual continuation of classic WRPGs like Planescape: Torment and Baldur's Gate, this would be it.
Edit: Necro re-rezzing, my bad

I still go back occasionally to play an origin, I hope one day to forget it enough so I can play it again and it will feel new. Never has a game been so perfect although I never enjoyed the combat. I loved every second I was immersed in the world I even played a man so I could romance Morrigan thats huge for me I couldn't even do that for Jack in ME2 and I love Jack.
for me it is the best rpg experience bar none.
man this forum is so slow I come back and post in a thread I don't remember I already posted in LOL!

And while DA:O had a lot of content, BG2 had more. DA:O had some great villains, but Irenicus, with the impeccable voice acting, is still my favorite game villain of all time. Both games had an epic storyline, but I think BG2 just edges out DA:O in that respect too.
And BG2 wins on tactical combat challenge - you couldn't just rush in head long into battles, but figuring out the right tactic might make an initially extremely difficult battle trivial.
I sunk more hours into BG2 than DA:O, and I've sunk FAR too many hours on DA:O.
DA:O was the first Bioware game though that, at least for my first playthrough, captured some of that same feeling I had when playing BG2 the first time.
Also, DA:O had the different origin stories, which was new, and brought a lot to the game. And DA:O wins over BG2 in one respect: I've never been hooked into a story and a character as quickly as I was in my first playthrough of DA:O (playing dwarven commoner), and that includes BG2. In BG2, the game really hooked me only after getting out of Irenicus' dungeon; in DA:O, I was completely hooked early on in the origin story.
Overall though, BG2 is still the top dog for me.
