I have recently completed a play through of ME 1 (the first time in a long while) and I have some thoughts about the nature of the Crucible, or at least, what I think it should be.
Before I get into it I would like to discuss the possibility of defeating the Reapers surrounding earth conventionally.
I believe it is possible based on two observations of mine:
1) When talking with Vigil it is stated that the Reapers were able to defeat the Protheans because they were able to take the citadel and split the Prothean Empire into various pieces, cutting them off from each other by turning off/controlling the Mass Relays.
Vigil does not state that the Protheans could not have defeated the Reapers with a unified military.
2) The Reapers did not attack Earth with maximum strength. We know for a fact that a portion of the Reaper armada attacked both Palaven and Thessia. We also know that they had a presence on Tuchanka and Rannoch. With this information we can surmise that the Reaper force was spread through out the galaxy, ether that or they are terrible strategists. I find it hard to believe that during their invasion the Reapers would only have a presence/attack 5 planets total.
With this information I will estimate that the Reaper force attacking Earth is between 40%-60% of their strength. This portion is attacked by a vast majority of all organic fleets combined. I think they could, and must, pull off a conventional victory.
So what does this have to do with the Crucible?
I believe the Crucible its self is not a weapon, rather it is the final piece of the Citadel puzzle (IE the Catalyst) that will allow organics to control all the facets of the Citadel, including but not limited to control of the Mass Relays.
What does this mean?
It means that once the organic fleets defeat the Reapers on Earth the war is not over. Yes, they have dealt a severe blow to the Reaper force, but there are still many more out there wreaking havoc and it is up to the organic alliance (which I would imagine suffered very high casualties in the battle for Earth) to take out the rest of the Reapers. No small feat to be sure, but now they control the Mass Relays, the Reapers must dance to their tune and that is the key to an organic victory.
I see two ways for this to work.
1) The Crucible combined with the Catalyst allows the organics to not only turn off and on the Mass Relays, but also to change their orientation, forcing the Reapers to travel where they want them to, or to travel the long way.
2) Is simply giving the organics power to turn them on and off, allowing the organics the ability to travel instantaneously around the galaxy while forcing the Reapers to go the long way.
Ether way the organic fleets now have a significant logistical advantage over the Reapers forces.
The war is not over, in fact it may take decades to eliminate the Reapers, but it’s now a game of cat and mouse, and the hunted have now become the hunters.
My thoughts on the matter.
The true nature of the Crucible, or what it should be.
