i just spoke to the guy at frostback mountains, and he mentions a dwarf in redcliffe but it wont update my game. do i have to finish the redcliffe storyline to get farther into this story? i want to become a blood mage but i'm also trieng to seduce lelianna...

Yes, you'll run into the dwarf you need in Redcliffe village once you go there to start that part of your storyline.

It should be noted that, from my experience, at a certain point near end-game, you will no longer be able to complete Sten's quest in Redcliffe.
