I had heard of "New Coke" but the way it's so similar to ME3 ending controversy...

Bioware, look upon mistakes of others and learn.

Wise man learns from mistakes of others, fool not even from his own.

Apparently it tasted decently. From what I've heard, it was close to Pepsi in flavor and I abhor that Godawful cola.

New Coke was before my time, but very interesting theory. History repeats itself, so it could very well be the case here. It's a great theory, but only time is going to tell. Thanks for posting this

My pleasure. Like I said, the parallels are far too close to not be noted.

While initially I wanted to say that the soda market of the 80s and the video game market of today are too different to compare, I'm probably wrong on that. Not a big economics guy, and the similarities are too many to ignore.

Whichever way they go with this, I think this may be a turning point for Bioware, and possibly the game community at large. Fans are putting two and two together and realizing that as consumers, they have a say in matters and don't have to just accept what is given, like the game journalism sector seems to believe.

Still, hoping Bioware learns from Coke and decides to listen to what is being said, instead of ignoring all criticism and only listening to positive feedback.

Very, VERY good. I'm from Brazil, and we didn't have this "New Coke" here. It's history repeating itself almost 30 years thereafter. I really hope Bioware folks' see this post.

A must read.

I would say if it is the definitive ending, was intended to be the total utter end of ME3, then its more like the Fonz jumping the Shark.

While the commodities themselves are disparate in their constitution, the marketing strategies employed follow the same guidelines.

You need to put the paragraph about the later studies into the OP though.

No. Worse.

Starchild = "Nuking the fridge."

One single moment that destroys a franchise.

"Coke spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out where it had made a mistake, ultimately concluding that it had underestimated the public impact of the portion of the customer base that would be alienated by the switch. This would not emerge for several years afterward, however, and in the meantime the public simply concluded that the company had, as Keough suggested, failed to consider the public's attachment to the idea of what Coke's old formula represented. While that has become conventional wisdom in the ensuing years, some analyses have suggested otherwise."

this is a beautiful analogy, great find wantedman!

Interesting post. As I've said before, April will bring with it the tidings of Bioware's future as a company. It's a step up, or slow painful fall down. Not to be extremist, but that is what this whole thing stacks up to.

Essentially, yes. They're at the precipice of defining their company for the future.

someone should tweet masseffect asking if they remember new coke.

good read and as others have mentioned, history always finds a way to repeat itself.

That's a pretty decent comparison, but many companies have their fiascos. The U.S. Military is actually going through one right now with it's new M855A1 "Green" ammo. Kind of a random note, but when you boost something so high with promos, it really hits hard when the bottom falls out of it.
