The problem with Crystal Pepsi was that someone else hijacked the message. Once SNL's "Crystal Gravy" came out, it was all but over.

Vanilla Coke is BAWS

Damn, I could realy go for some vanilla coke right now. It's been years since I've even seen it

It must be only a regional drink because it's here at the Walmart in my college town, but not in the Walmart of my hometown.

Thanks all :) It seems rather odd how history repeats itself...

the cycle has repeated itself more times than you can fathom....

also, I never drew the parallels between ME3 and new coke (it was before my time, but my parents talked about it regularly)

I've heard there are some places in canada where you can still get it labelled as "Coke 2" or somesuch.

edited because New coke in no way came before any article of clothing (let's see if anyone can figure out what typo I made)

It is beyond your comprehension, Shepard.

I was JUST talking to my mom about this very parallel last night. (Yeah, my mom plays Mass Effect...and nothing else. XD) Glad someone else caught on to this. OP, do you mind if I link this thread to my huge compilation thread (link in the banner)?

On the subject of my mom, BioWare better be glad she has a job, because this woman would tear them to shreds if she was a full-time Retake member.

Interesting connection, I wasn't around for New Coke so I can't really comment. It does seem like BioWare has a big decision ahead of themselves

Neither was I, but I'm familiar with the social phenomenon that it became.

Followed the link in your signature OP, and I do feel that many of the main points seem to be recurring issues. Both companies were pretty high up the popularity chain, and then they pulled a incredibly sick and twisted joke, the only difference is that Coke decided to apologize for being offensive instead of claiming that it's the fanbases fault for not having a good sense of humor and that they are right.

Exactly. For years to come, I do fear, "Mass Effect" will be a harmful pejorative describing failed products.

I find it hard to believe it "polled" well in taste tests, that crap was godawful!!! Remember the protesters with the "We don't want Coksi" signs?

They made it lots sweeter to be more like Pepsi. I guess that makes the "taste tasters" of yesteryear the 75 perfect score reviewers of today, huh? :)

It may be, but few failures have achieved monumental, cultural status like New Coke.

IIRC, Coke didn't go back to the old formula (that used Sugar) they moved to a similar one using HFCS that's when it picked up the "classic" name.

It's been years since I had to studied this case in my Marketing class.

No it's not, Pepsi didn't stop producing "Pepsi" for Crystal Pepsi.   Unless BW has released another ME3 with a different ending...

You're correct; the taste difference between HFCS and actual sugar is negligible, however. Plus, it was a smart business decision, price-wise: HFCS is much, much cheaper.

A friend of mine is a barkeeper at a fancy schmanzy joint. They make their high-end longdrinks that require Coke with imported Mexican Coke because its made with cane sugar rather than HFCS.

Apparently it does taste better.....some say at least....

Not sure if there's something to it or if it's just the latest fad.

The difference however is that you only need to sell a game once to a single consumer... soda you have to keep selling. As it is mass effect 3 sold enough quickly enough in the first few weeks that this wont have as much of an impact as it did to coke. - Just my thoughts.

EDIT: Still a fair compairison thoughB)

Agreed, there are differences in the two models--however, the two are very similar in that they have to keep selling for an indeterminate amount of time.

Obviously word of mouth had an insurmountable impact for Mass Effect 3, just as it did for New Coke. The sales flatlines because of it.
