Because the series didn't deserve to get "Matrix'd", and have a terrible ending ruin the series. And because the fact that I'll be getting Xenoblade in just over a week is proof that holding the line works.

So with that in mind, why wasn't anything like this done with the Matrix? Or with any other game/movie trilogies that didn't end the way the fans wanted it to? What makes Mass Effect a special case?

Well Mass Effect 3 promoted its endings in advertisements and interviews that didn't match up with the product.  Some like the Rachni quote aren't even close to being true.  Which is funny since it was made after the game had gone gold.

We had great expectations for Mass Effect 3 that were fueled by the information put out by the developer.  People may have hated the second and third films in the Matrix series but it wasn't promoted in a way that gave its fans the wrong idea.  Plus the second one was bad, not just the third one.

Nobody got the wrong idea because the plot was barely comprehensible.

Hold The Line wasn't invented yet.

The Matrix's "Hold The Line" could've been "(Re)Take the Red Pill"

You seriously don't see the difference between matrix and mass effect ?

Well, after witnessing the ending to ME3, I have greater respect for Cypher when he wanted to be reinserted back into the matrix. If BioWare told us before that THIS was the ending...

No, there's absolutely no clear difference between the two...

In response to first.
They want choices to really matter and also get an ending that is happy (by happy i mean as good an ending as you can get out of a galactic war/attempted mass genocide.)

Why not? Sometimes big business needs a kick to the nono spot to get things going in the right direction...besides, not like I'm literally standing 24/7 on a line...outside of Biowares headquarters. Although I do suspect that will happen if this DLC goes South. This entire thing has reminded me just how insane some people really are in this world...literally mental.

Lol, i also see the similarities between the 2 (of course i was told) the most improtant difference between them (to me) is that Neo's sacrifice meant something and was a very powerful sacrifice, Shep's was not and it screwed more people over than it actually saved.

I don't.

In fact, I'm quite pissed that such an awesome part of Mass Effect 1 has been ruined by association with angry people shouting it at every opportunity in every thread. It used to be cool.

I should start a "Retake Hold The Line" movement.

It seems many people have their own "right" reason for holding the line. What do you think is the REAL purpose for this Retake movement?

Well that's obvious, our half dolphin overloads have commanded that we destroy as much commerical infrastructure prior to their land based invasi-----Wait.

Uhh I mean something, something better ending.

Because of the potential I saw in ME1,

Back when the reapers were like an unknowable force of nature, rather than simplistic evil empire (ME2) or child's magical plaything (ME3).

Or ME2

When my squad developed awesome personalities and the illusive man had a philosophy I disagreed with but respected, rather than the batsh%t crazy/villainous illusive man in ME3.

Or even ME3, when they drastically improved the combat and had gripping moments with Mordin and Legion's countdown with Tali pleading in my ear as I scrambled to talk down the Quarian fleet.

Sometimes it feels like I'm trying to save Bioware from EA's indoctrination and maybe its just time to pull the plug. Maybe they just foresaw the inevitable milking and just decided to torpedo Shep to end the story before they became stuck doing Mass Effect of Duty 2013, 14, 15, 16....,

you REALLY havent thought what changes this will bring ?

instead of a blinkered view of getting another ending, you really REALLY need to think what else is going to happen because of all this.

try and think of biowares side and what they will HAVE to avoid in any future games.

so entitled and selfish you all simply forgot to take into account what bioware will do from now on.

and you wont be able to moan or complain about what happens in the future.

BECAUSE YOU CAUSED IT.

Obviously they'll have to avoid bad writing in the future, having thought about it a great deal.

You realize you're posting on a game forum? At least we're trying to affect change.

YES.  THIS.  ^^^^

I mean after Bethesda made Broken Steel ALL their games sucked AND then their company collapsed, I think.  Right?

Plus I heard that every other developer had to stop making games for a year as punishment.

And my fish died.

Because I want something unique that gets me to feel that replaying it would be more worthwhile, rather then something that's fairly generic no matter what path I've chosen the entire 3 installments.

A better question to ask is do any of these people actually know HOW. Because you are all interpreting it in too many different ways. One of you says "We don't buy Mass Effect 3 DLC". Another says "We don't buy Bioware games". One guy even said "We don't play the Bioware games we already own".

Seriously, get your people in order.

Because I know without a doubt that Bioware could have done better, okay they had a little slip up with DAII, but when you look at everything else they have done.....well I think I've made my point.

I just realized why I'm not holding the line, myself. I always figured that the series didn't make a heck of a lot of sense, so when ME3 didn't make a heck of a lot of sense it didn't especially bother me.

Yeah, I know. Hooray for me. The power of low expectations should never be underestimated.

First, because this is my favorite franchise, second because I want to replay the three games without having that feeling of pointlessness and third because my first favorite franchise got ruined and I don't want that to happen again.
