Really? REALLY?

THIS much outrage over endings that leave a lot up to interpretation in a game series that has stressed player choice from the start?

So let me get this straight: we want obvious black and white choices that answer everything for us in a game about player choice? We don't want thought-provoking endings that leave enough up to our own interpretation that we can come up with theories that reach 10,000+ responses in these forums?

After 100+ hours of some of the very best gaming I've experienced in a life spent gaming, I'm still thinking about the ending more than anything else, and I at the very least love that about it. The ending ties in symbolically, metaphorically, philosophically, etc. with everything from the characters, dialogue and gameplay design of the series itself to real life ideologies about the nature of technology, humanity, theology, and so on.

There's a lot to think about, a lot beneath the surface of the final choices and how they were presented, and a lot to decide for ourselves, which is what Mass Effect has always been about. Shepard and co. told us all along that nothing about our victories in this war would come easy, and I'm glad that carries over to the ending too. I'd much rather figure it all out days - even weeks - later than have Bioware go against everything this series has taught me gaming is capable of and figure it all out for me.

I may be in the minority but I'm okay with that. I'd just like to thank the writers of the ending just as much as everyone else involved in this project for keeping this journey my own until the credits rolled, and helping cement Mass Effect as the best series I've ever played.

Thanks for playing.

I respectfully disagree. The endings make everything I felt like I was doing before worthless.

Thanks for the feedback! I still think the ending was terrible though. What did you dislike most about the ending?

I'd also like to thank the writers for giving me half a story and giving me the opportunity to pay them so I can fill in the rest with my imagination. That's just awesome.

End of trilogy should not leave things to our interpretation..... It would be like MGS4 just ending with Solid Snake beating Liquid Ocelot.... no closure and a-lot of unanswered questions.

I'm sorry, you may have thought the ending was thought provoking, I thought it was cheesy as hell. After reading lots of books, I can see it was an easy way out to end the story.

Obvious troll is obvious. It is blatantly clear "What we want" and if a person had read a few of the "10,000+" comments on the ending in this forum they'd know that "A black and white hand holding" ending is not "What we want"

Yeah, whatever. The endings rendered the rest of the entire series pointless. That's why we're upset.

You mean that real-life ideology where it's possible for robots to have DNA?

Also: lol

Everyone is thinking about the ending more than anything else - unfortunately.

From committing suicide, to genocide, to outright galactic extinction, we didn't even get the option to simply LOSE to the reapers.

No one is asking BioWare to "figure it all out" for us. But at the end, it ceased to be a game with an outcome that could be described. That's not a lack of hand-holding, that's just an abandonment of what the series was up until then - a game.

So tell me...what did you "decide" about the ending, all the squadmates, races, planets, etc? How did it work out for you?

First of all, I'm going to ignore the fact that the ending taken at face value does not make sense, and if taken not at face value is not an ending at all.

Do I want my hand held? Yeah. Because the game led me to expect that.

This is not a game that is in any way nebulous. This is a game where every character will spout out their life's story at the slightest provocation. This is a game where you have a codex that will explain precisely how reapers can fuse a Turian and a Krogan. This is a game that allows you to examine every minor issue in agonizing detail.

I didn't complain when Shadow of the Colossus left me with a vague ending, because that whole game is minimalistic. I didn't complain when Killer 7 gave me a confusing ending, because that whole game is wrapped in layers of metaphor. It's fine to make a vague and thought provoking ending to a vague and thought provoking game. However, you can't make a story that provides easy answers to every question throughout its entirety, and then leaves you with a vague ending. You can't set an expectation for your audience and then swerve at the last moment. That is poor writing.

With all due respect, there is a difference between an ending that leaves a lot up to the imagination and something that is, objectively, bad writing.

Here's a review of the ending, courtesy of a fellow writer.

Seriously, read it. It's interesting, no matter your opinion.

LOL... right, an asinine ass-pull of an ending representing Technophobia in a technology driven sci-fi game based on a silly tech singularity theory is really SO thought provoking. Because it hasn't been done ad nausem by The Matrix and Blade Runner, Irobot and myriad other examples before right?

I'm thinking this might be one of those EA Viral marketers that was talked about.

The endings are no more objectively bad than they are objectively good. It's understandable why people weren't happy with the endings, they're certainly not what I was expecting, and hell, they wouldn't be any worse off with a little more exposition. Still, you're not alone OP, I liked the ending to.
