All I can say is...what an ending. This is perhaps the 6th or 7th time I've completed it however I still get shivers down my spine when I see Shepherd emerging from the rubble with a smirk. It's a shame that the other Mass effect games couldn't capture that "f yeah" emotion. :(

The first one has THE story. It is/has been hard (obviously) for Bioware to match it. It was EXTREMELY well laid out, built up, revealed, and concluded. classic good storytelling. It will ALWAYS be my favorite of the 3 for that reason. I can get past the awkward game mechanics pretty quickly (you get used to anything) and enjoy the whole thing.  Besides, the mechanics only suffers AFTER you experience ME2...which was kinda the point.  You make something, try stuff out, keep what works, alter what doesn't.

The poor (relatively) texures is a bit jarring after 2 and 3...would be nice to see a graphic makeover of 1 to bring the graphics up to par with 2 at least (wish list).

If they rebuilt ME1 using the ME2-3 engine and released it as a "Special Edition" for all platforms, I'd be ALL over that. Specially if they included all the DLC and just released it on disc. For the PS3. So I could finally play that story on my big screen tv instead of on my work computer.

Yes. Sovereign docking the citadel is the best cinematic i have ever seen in a game. And i still think ME1 is the best one in the series.

I actually grew to like the Mass Effect combat, I preferred the more tactical element of it rather than the go in rambo style of Mass Effect 2 and 3.

I don't know if ME1 combat was more tactical. Just less time spent being crouched behind cover.

Actually i felt much more vulnerable in ME2 and 3 than in the first one. I'm playing ME1 now with a vanguard on insanity and it feels kinda easy. Although i have more ME1 playthroughs than 2 and 3 combined. Guess that has something to do with it.

Definitely my favorite game in the series, I can't see that ending being topped. Had a lot of great memories from it, I miss the true long range sniping of Mass Effect, and the mako even though it was tough to drive at many times. Think I'm going to take it out this weekend and make a new character or two. If they ever released an anniversary version I would definitely buy it.

If you prefer tactical you are in the wrong franchise. Try Tom Clancy games, Arma, Operation Flash Point etc

Uncalled for.

I'm replaying Mass Effect 1, already made and finished with two characters, I'm on my third one, I actually like the first one more for the RPG elements, I just hate the cover/run system and the graphics, better designed worlds for the mako levels would be awesome also.

I Guess bioware wants to appeal to the shooter/action gamers that are in larger numbers to get more sales, Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 are proof of that and I can't talk about Dragon Age 3 but from what I already heard, it doesn't bode well.

I actually like the gameplay from the first dragon age and from the first mass effect better(minus the cover and running).

And ME3 is by far the most tactical....no denying that...combat has been getting better in each game, that's a fact....

But the Story and exploration/immersiveness of ME1 make it the best in the series and one of the best games of all time imo....

ME3 could've topped it.....if it weren't for the last 10 minutes....but they can still do it, I still have faith they have something in store for us

Yes.  I've hoped/dreamed of this since ME2.  A special editon release of all three with the first upgraded/updated to the standards of 2 and 3.

My Amazon critique of ME3 did mention that THIS time insanity actually felt more...insane.  ME1 and ME2 were a breeze at insanity.

I DO miss the very fast charge of the Krogan and Geth Prime in ME1.  THAT was fairly intimidating.  They all became sluggish in ME2 and 3.

Arguably the best ending to any game I have played. It doesn't hurt that the pacing was superb.

ME1 had the best ending of the 3 games.
ME2 had the best build up to a final mission (suicide mission).
ME3 has the best combat.
As for the all-time best ending to a game, Red Dead Redemption still holds that spot in my books

Does anyone feel that the graphics (with the characters especially) in ME1 & ME2 were better than they are in ME3? I remember playing ME1 and even my sisters who don't play video games were were impressed with the graphics. ME2 was pretty good as well, but for some reason the characters in ME3 seem especially fake to me. Particularly that reporter Diana Allers, but even the returning characters don't seem as realistic as they did in the original... Or maybe it was just because that was the first game?

I'd say that's nostalgia speaking. ME3 has the best graphics in my opinion, just compare faces, colors, lighting and especially armor to see the difference. ME1 isn't butt-ugly but it does take a while to get used to it after playing ME3. ME2 is decent but lacks the gritty feel of ME3. Kind of like the difference between God of War 3 and 2.

The ending was somewhat decent. I've never really been a fan of the hero death "fakeout", so it didn't really catch on to me.

ME1 had the best story and cliche but awesome ending
ME2 had the best combat, without that annoying duck and roll business, but the build up to the final mission was a drag as it was cut and copy for all squad mate...recruit mission, loyalty mission...
ME3 had the best climactic moments and emotional rollercoaster ride

ME1 is best:
1. memorable team members, Liara>samara, wrex>grunt, kaiden > jacob
2. that epic moment when you find out the truth about reapers and protheans
3. epic villain who just wants to save everyone's life
4. you don't spend 90% of the game gathering a freaking team just to let them do 1 mission.

Maybe... Or maybe I've just gotten used to it. I do think the characters aren't as good as in the previous games but maybe I'll think differently when I go back to ME1

Mass Effect 1 was simple and awesome. Plot was basically "We need to stop Saren from bringing big machines to kill us"

Mass Effect 2 starting hinting at a bigger picture and purpose. Foreshadowing of dark energy and reproduction.

Mass Effect 3 through all that stuff out of the window in favour of saying "You know what? We kill you so don't create versions of us (synthetics) that kill you... Despite the fact that you have proven that synthetics and organics can live in peace by bringing together the Geth and Quarians. Oh yeah we were also somehow created by an AI".

Are you starting to see why Mass Effect 1 had the best story?

I have to admit though the whole human reaper now makes no sense after what Starchild says and even more so I thought that the whole human reaper thing was further foreshadowing of the reaper's need to absorb the genetic materials, memories and brain power of the humans so they could stop the Mass Relays leaking Dark Energy. Now it just proves to be fille rwhilst Mass Effect 1 is turned into a huge plot hole because of Starchild. This is why you should NEVER EVER play pass the parcel with teh title of "Lead Writer" because everyone wants to mark their territory... no matter what.
