So a while ago (as in like, 4 months ago) I started a Warrior in the attempt to get the Heavy Hitter trophy and also the trophy for leveling a Warrior to 20. I took a long break to do other stuff and decided to come back. I'm probably going to start from scratch (ugh, Circle tower again) because I don't really remember where I left off build-wise. So, being the horrible newb I am at Warriors as my specialty is in Rogues, I come to you kids in this slightly-dead forum with a couple questions.
1) Best race? I'm thinking Dwarf.
2) Dual-wield, two-handed, or S&B?
3) What specializations?
4) What gear should I aim towards? (only DLC is Blood Dragon Armor and Stone Prisoner)
5) As I'm also planning on being the main tank, how many points into Constitution should I have? I typically go 25-30 on my Mages and Rogues, but I'm not sure if that would be enough.
Going for the Heavy Hitter trophy.

This might help for your warrior build. Enjoy.

I'm no expert on warriors and have only played one, but the way I've played companion tank warriors has been to worry less about CON and more about STR & DEX. The tank has to be the one who can rile up all the baddies to themself without being blasted, not be the one doing the most damage necessarily. Better to absorb damage with strong armor (STR) and avoid getting hit at all (DEX) than to let the damage happen and hope to survive it primarily on health and poultices.
I just fought the Dead Trenches bridge battle with Oghren as tank (I use a mod so for being able to build all recruits as I wish from scratch, so now he's all shields, no 2-hander) and without a point in CON and all in STR and DEX he's wearing Cailan's armor, so good absorption, and keeps a high defense... So it turned out that the swarm of darkspawn were missing regularly and doing less than 10 dam on a hit. He shrugged it off, and the dam was offset by some minor regeneration in the armor, I believe. Normally after sending him in to get all the attention and make his Taunt on everything, Morrigan or Wynne has to toss a Force Field on him, but this time I didn't bother. I'm also playing Hard though, not nightmare.
But what you should come to expect for a tank is the most boring job of all, as defensive as possible while most of the damage is done by mage spells, rogue stabs, archery, and 2-handers. You're the bulwark everyone appreciates who leads nearly every battle and is kept alive at all costs, but not the one getting all the glory for victories.
The essentials are STR, DEX, great armor, Taunt, stamina to be able to spam the Taunt (so less use of talents other than Taunt), the central Shield line for Shield Wall and Shield Mastery to get the best shield talent defense and well as immunity to knockdowns, items that give good resistance to everything- physical, mental, elemental, maybe magical- the shield on Vartag in Orzammar (which you can pickpocket at multiple instances) which gives +12 defense, maybe Regeneration on a mage to keep you Taunt stamina up, definitely the Force Field spell on a mage so that after Taunting everything you can be invulnerable while the rest of the party does their number, all 4 points in weapon training skill early (though leave room for 1 point in Steal to get Denerim rogue quests (if you want 'em) and the Coersion skill line).
Best race is a matter of preference, but I'd say either dwarf or city elf for story purposes alone. Again this is limited advice based on my own gameplay. Others might go at it differently

Just noticed the title of the thread again... Yeah, being the the tank and being the "heavy hitter" are mutually exclusive. If you want to maximize your dam you'll have to skimp a bit on defense, so being the chief draw of opponent attention will get you in scuffles you'll be damaged more easily by. I'm sure it can be done, especially by spamming healing poultices and having to buy them all the time, but compare that to the 60 regular health poultices I have saved up by simply playing the tank AS a tank. Oghren hasn't needed one more than once in the Deep Roads (spider queen's a pain). Better to have Alistair then whoever be the tank while you specialize in 2-hand, dual wield, archery whatever you want... and even archery hits heavily at higher levels... Or just bask in the role of Protector without getting the "heavy hitter" awards... Or try to ride the middle. It's a more bumpy ride, but can be done

Great- NOW I see the link to that nice, thorough recommendation by Random70...

I should note that Random's builds where higher level characters which you won't be able to get to with just the reg. game. But to get the Heavy Hitter achievement as a Rouge and max out Dex and the Arrow of Slaying tree you can get it before leaving Lothering. It might work the same as a warrior archer.

My friend got this by using a rouge. With talents and back stabs, I guess it is a lot easier than with direct damage and brute force.

My rogue did a 394 DMG hit with Arrow of Slaying at level 5... Is that normal? Because my Warrior took well into Awakening to ever achieve something like that and my DW rogue never got close.

If you pumped Dex then yes its possible. Its possible with an Archer Warrior as well (pumping dex again), but DW talents unless you are capitalizing on NPC tactics are not designed for one hit damage, but multiple fast hits preferably backstabs.

Of course, I did manage to get a 1100 damage backstab not long after posting what I did with a Cunning DW Rogue. So what the hell do I know.

I think i got that achievement with my mage spamming virulent walking bomb or something
Got it at the Ruined temple with those 'cultists' loads of them in 1 room.
