Didn't find it all that depressing ,maybe because it was trying too hard. Anything depressing about the endings was offset by the WTF ! factor.

it was well done. the aftermath of the thessia mission alone was true brilliance, excellent voice acting and writing

I seriously thought the entire game would be like a tea party where shepard invites the reapers over and they all watch The Notebook and chat about old times. I WAS WRONG!

Yeah, I think Bioware tried to hard, but they did get the tone right in ME2, with all the criminal elements the tone was perfect.

Its war, what did you expect? Unicorns and rainbows?
I even think it wasn't depressing enough, though I really liked how the aftermath of Thessia was handled.

If you think ME3 was too dark or depressing you need to read a few war reports / books, they would totally blow up your depress-o-meter.

And I know, it's supposed to seem this way. The repears are causing an appocalyspe, yada yada.

I believe this is what lawyers refer to as "asked and answered".

The tone of the game was perfect to me.

Prior to the ending, I felt the amount of triumph and loss they give you was pretty much pitch perfect. I lost Legion and Mordin, but I did it to achieve better, happier outcomes, and it felt right. I saved Palaven and Tuchanka, but lost Thessia. Nice amount of give and take. Believable, but with enough victories that I wasn't mired in depression.

This! Thessia is one of my favourite missions in the game because it contrasts so beautifully to what has come before. You truly fail in so many ways, but you rise again at the end and vow to do better. This is a big aspect to why most of ME3 is bittersweet in such an amazing way. I loved the tone in ME3.

Ending aside of course.

To be honest, I disagree. Except for the ending there was NOTHING hopeless to me the entire game (which, by the way, is one of the reasons I found the ending so bad).

I mean - beware, spoilers ahead!:

Genophage cure gave the Krogans hope back, especially if you also managed to save Eve.
The Reaper invasion of Tuchanka was repelled.
Peace between Geth and Quarians is the beginning of a new galactic age - for the first time, synthetics and organics live together as friends.
The Reaper invasion of Rannoch is repelled.
The "Wonder of Palaven": Krogan and Turians became allies in spite of millenia of hate, and their alliance is so strong they were actually TAKING BACK REAPER-OCCUPIED TERRITORY, for the first time in history.
Earth is overrun, but nevertheless Anderson holds out for weeks and leads a successful Guerilla war.
Every time you talk to your squadmates or are losing hope someone comes and tels you they are certain the war will be won.

All in all the entire game was a lead-up to a LotR-style final battle where Evil is completely destroyed and an era of peace begins.

Yes, very gloomy and depressing, but then I guess that was the whole point. The reaper massacring the kid on the shuttle during the opening sequence sets that hopeless tone for the game. That's what it was designed to do.

Nope, war is hell and the war's never been bigger.

Honestly, I was actually hoping it would be a little bleaker than it is.

I thought it is amazingly depressing. In a good way. The situation isn't good, and there are many moments throughout that remind you of it. Loss is a big theme in ME3. But so is hope.

Hard to be cheerful when:

Psychotic entities from beyond the galaxy are trying to wipe out all life to stop a threat that; "we cannot fathom."

or

Psychotic entities from beyond the galaxy whose solution to saving us is to kill us all before our creations kill us...all...yeah

or

Realizing that some god entity is causing cyclical mass death and destruction...just because...it likes to...you know, repeat things every 50k years.

I may have left some things out...

I thought the tone was fine up until when you 'say your goodbyes' because suddenly it seemed like my entire crew lost their faith and turned into fatalists.

If this game was even grim, Tuchanka, Palaven, Rannoch and many iconic places would of fallen. But despite the dark tones, we are pushing back Palaven, got back Rannoch, actually get Geth and Quarian to work together, unite the species and create the crucible.

If the Reapers were even real the situation would of been much more ****ter. Suicides, murders and opputunists should of been put in to actually fit the tone. But despite not, there were happy endings to some situations.

Bioware nailed the atmosphere of the game. The Reaper invasion needs to be depressing.

The ending, however, was depressing for an entirely different reason.

Not at all. It was just the right level of depressing. If anything, the "feel" throughout the entire game was spot on. Initial desperation and horror at the devastation, slowly rising tension punctuated by a slim thread of hope and anticipation.

Heading into the final battle, it really felt like victory was possible and the galaxy would be able to rebuild and move forward.

And then, of course, we had the ending. Now THAT was too depressing.

"Congratulations! You've reached the end. Now please choose how exactly you would like the galaxy to go to s***!"

When monstrous machines from out of space appear and begin to devastate planet after planet, I wasn't expecting sun shine and lollipops I mean we've been building to this game for quiet a while it's hard to believe that anyone that played the games wasn't ready for the tone of this one.
