My Take on the Ending

Okay, so before I go any further, I will say that this thread is entirely about the Indoctrination Theory, but not in the way you might think – at least, not entirely.  So if you don’t care to read it, please move on without posting useless spam about how you didn’t read it.

I’ve played through the entire trilogy three times now.  Yes, I brought myself to actually play all three games again, despite knowing how the ending was going to be.  I decided that I was going to do a different kind of playthrough, however, and not just a traditional Paragon/Renegade playthrough.  I was going to play the game through the point of view of three characters: Shepard, Saren, and the Illusive Man.  And for each of those characters, I applied the ending that best suited them, and it was truly an experience.

When I played as TIM Shepard, I was a mix of Paragon and Renegade (not quite half and half; usually I was mostly renegade, and I would always do what was best for me and/or humanity).  I didn’t convince Saren he was indoctrinated.  I saved the Collector Base.  I chose to Control the Reapers.

When I played as Saren Shepard, I was a mix of pure Renegade.  I acted in the interest of myself, and I did whatever it took to get my mission done.  I killed innocent people intentionally.  I killed friends.  I let friends die.  I ignored their requests for favors (with the exception of Legion and Miranda, because I needed two people to survive for me to survive).  I saved the Collector Base.  I chose to synthesize the galaxy – to form a true alliance between organics and machines.

When I played as Shepard Shepard (yeah, I know…), I was complete Paragon.  I put lives before my mission.  I saved friends.  I made sure to go out of my way to make people happy.  I destroyed the Collector Base.  I chose to stand by my original mission: destroy the Reapers.

And then something hit me as I went back to the forum.

I read around.  With every post I read where someone was trying to convince another that the Indoctrination Theory was true, and with every post I read from that other person denying it, the conversations between Shepard & Saren and Shepard & TIM kept playing in the back of my head.  And the more I read people denying, the more I thought ‘ya know, Saren and TIM denied Indoctrination was true…’

Whether they intended this or not, Bioware completely ripped Indoctrination from the game and put it right into the minds of their consumers.  I’m not saying that those who don’t believe in the Indoctrination Theory are “indoctrinated” – it’s just a metaphor.  But it certainly places us right in the mindset of certain key characters throughout the game, and lets those same conversations play out in real life between real people.

And THAT is the true brilliance of the ending.

This whole idea sounded a lot better in my head, but I hope everyone understands where I am going with this.  If not, feel free to ignore.
