i get why they were hard to implement in game for the player but why not in cutscenes ie ostagar charge. would have made the game more epic.....cavalry>dog charge

I'm sure I remember of the party banter convos (I think between Zev and Oghren) mention that there are no horses in Ferelden, or at least that they are rare or something.

Go and check out the gravestones in Haven.
They die out already. [In game, that is.]

Horses are rare in Thedas, that's why the Chevaliers of orlais are so feared, an actual mounted cavalry unit, if I recall correctly.

Think about it, those soldiers would have to buy the eventual horse armor DLC...

There was a horse plague in Ferelden just before the events in the game kick off. It came for Orlais, and killed Loghain's favourite mount, and happened just around the time the Grey Wardens arrived. Why he thought everything was an Orlaisian plot, total truth

Cailan and Duncan talk repeatedly about "riding into battle".

If you strike up a convo about what Darrien is going to do in Ostagar with him in the human noble origin, he continually talks about Bryce's horse and his role in tending to it as a glorified squire.

There's an option when talking to that halla herder girl in the Dalish camp when you mention humans in Ferelden use horses.

So yes, there are horses, and they're plentiful enough to be used in war.

Why don't we see them in game? A wizard did it.

Since there are alot of Mabari war hounds in this region they needed extra dog food.

There are horses in Ferelden.

There are no horses in the game because we had time for a limited number of models, and engineering a way for NPC models to ride horses when we weren't going to use it for PC models seemed like a waste -- as nice as it would have been, yes. Loghain's men were supposed to be cavalry originally, for instance, and a charge on Denerim at the end would have been cool (even if a tad Helm's Deep-ish, I suppose). But such is how it goes.

Same reason there were none in nwn, or bg aside from critters I imagine. You don't need them for fast travel (though it might be assumed you use them) and it spares them from having to make a mounted combat system or make models for horses and riders. its less work. and a mounted combat system(or a mount system in general) would make things even more complicated. Just assume the mounted combat takes place offscreen and continue enjoying the game. =b

edit: And I manage to  post my geuss right as David comes and gives us the official reason. I've got some timing. XD

One of my many questions answered, haha. I was wondering why there were no horses with all the talk done about them by various NPCs in the game.

This would be where calling up friends who work at Blizzard, or even Bethesda comes into play. NWN didn't originally have horses that weren't ride-able as well, but later figured it out and released in DLC. In Oblivion horse riding was implemented very nicely, including retarded cost of horse armor.

So its not like it hasn't ever been done, or that DA doesn't have a model base that couldn't be manipulated into a horse (ox model), it just takes a few well-placed phonecalls and a desire to learn.

I really don't see a need for mounts in this game. What would the player use them for, crossing the street? Riding to the next room in a dungeon? I would've loved to see horses in cutscenes, sure, but... this game didn't really need them.

Oblivion mounts were very awkward to handle. I think DA:O mounts would have to be similar, so it might be better not to have them.

It would be pretty cool if they included the models for NPCs and in battle scenes and so forth....  but apparently they lacked the resources to do so.

To be honest, the more responses I read from Bioware staff regarding things they could have done just sounds to me like the game was rushed.  What ever happened to releasing games when they are DONE?

Perhaps we have EA to blame for this :?
