Red Dead Redemption. I use that example a lot when comparing "bittersweet" and "godawful".

Did anyone actually dislike the ending to RDR? I really wonder if that's possible.

It was done in the most... amazing way possible. Marston defends his wife and kid, who get away from the dirty feds. John's son comes back, buries his folks, and then we carry on as him. Story never misses a beat, and the game was the most amazing one I'd played in ages. Great story and all that. Though I never bothered with 100%.

Could I be cheap and throw in Halo : Reach?

Song of Ice and Fire: A Game of Thrones.

Hell, every book had a rather bleak outlook but none ever left you completely hopeless or unfulfilled.

Th 'ultimate sacrifice' ending in DA:O did bittersweet well. BW apparently forgot that 'bittersweet' only works when the player feels accomplished, which is the opposite of what most people felt after the ending of ME3.

You know the odd thing is I would do the ultimate sacrifice everytime I played it but once to see what happned. The ultimate sacrfice while bitersweet felt like it made the story. I should say made the story flow for me I do not know why just felt like that is what would happen.

I tihnk I saw someone mention "clanned" I think the first season was ok but the second one clanned after story was really a ride for me.

anyone seen sunshine? i love that movie. the very definition of a "bittersweet" and "sacrifice" ending.

/spoiler
I did and felt it suffered from the same problem that ME3 does.  They suddently introduced a monster (character) that made no sense.

It was like they decided to change from a sci fi movie about fixing their sun problem to "oh lets make a sci fi monster movie.  Alien was pretty popular."

Modern Warfare 3- Peace is eventually made between NATO and Russia, and you kill Makarov, but only after the fact he's killed millions of people worldwide. But nevertheless, Makarov can't hurt anyone else.

Halo 3- In the end the only humans left are those on Earth, but Master Chief manages to defeat the Covenant and the Flood, and humans make peace with the Elites.

More importantly, Halo Reach- You watch your entire squad die and you sacrifice yourself so the Pillar of Autumn can escape Reach, effectively ensuring that Master Chief can do his thing and make the main trilogy happen. And you're given closure with a cutscene telling you that your sacrifice made the survival of humanity possible, and Reach is eventually re terraformed and made habitable again.

Dragon Age: Awakening- You save the world from the Darkspawn (again), but at the cost of Vigil's Keep or Amaranthine, and hundreds of lives either way. Well, not really that bittersweet, but the end of Awakening definitely felt more like a bleak victory than in DA:O where you could achieve the absolute best endings possible.

I am one of the small few who liked Blops story, and I thought it's ending was sort of bittersweet because it possibly hinted that you helped kill Kennedy.

The Metal Gear Series had a great example of bittersweet ending. Other would be: FFX, Shadow of the Colossus, Red Dead Redemption, Serenity/Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, etc.

I would even say that the Batman Arkham City ending falls under a good example of a bittersweet ending.

Now this funny that we both mention this game.

You didn't think the evil ending was bitter sweet as well? That one was actually more heart breaking IMO.

Red Dead Redemption was an absolutely stunning ending. I sat there for ten or so minutes just going "Holy (bleep)... John!"

But it was good because it was foreshadowed the whole game, and the entire thing fit PERFECTLY within the game. That's what happens when writers are working together and come up with the ending together.

Then you have ME3, where two toadstools sit down and crap out an ending together without actually consulting with the rest of the writing staff, and decide to mimic the Matrix, and be as bittersweet as RDR, because it's now the new rage to have your main character die at the end, and they come up with something that has just as much to do with ME3 as freaking Mario Kart does.

tl;dr: Rockstar San Diego : Excellent writers and excellent producers.
Bioware Mass Effect group : Excellent writers, a crappy lead producer and two horrible monkeys who think they are 'edgy.'

Damn right! It's still my favorite game of all time thanks to ME 3's awful ending.

In movies, Star Trek II Wrath of Khan. I cried my eyes out for Spock (and we didn't know they would bring him back to life) But his sacrifice was so awesome and most importantly SO IN CHARACTER.
Roger Ebert said it was the choice of a hero, a fool, or a Vulcan.

Metal Gear Solid 4 ending was pretty bittersweet, even just by looking at what happens to the world as a consequence from destroying the Patriots.

I second that. Tbh I don't think any game can top Planescape's story/depth ever.

This ^ is 100% accurate.

Hudson: "We killed our lead character.  We're so deep and brooding." <_<
