H3 left room for SPECULATION FOR EVERYONE! Without completely alienating their fans and leaving planet sized plotholes, in fact the speculation was quite entertaining, not this "OMG THIS CAN'T BE TRUE" kind we are left with now.Orange Tee wrote...
Halo 3 did it the best and were even able to leave questions in the air without leaving everything else in the story a mess. RDR was great too.

However, I do want my Mass Effect to end Happy.

I have to agree. Halo 3's ending was pretty amazing. With the inclusion with the Legendary Ending made it just feel so "right" if that makes sense.

I went into ME3 expecting the "Fight like a Krogan run like a leopard but you'll never be better than Commander Shepard" kind of ending I had in ME2Wes Mordine wrote...
LA Noire doesn't end well, but it was very well written.
However, I do want my Mass Effect to end Happy.

The Hunger Games - Both the first book, and the trilogy as a whole.
I'd describe the ending of the third book as just bitter all around.

I'm gonna be honest, if RDR was a movie it would have been oscar freaking gold, that said as a video game I hated having to play as another characterjzzabelle wrote...
Red Dead Redemption...best game ending everJohn Marston is one of my favorite characters in fiction.
Liked the ending, but hated the fact that I had to continue on as his son. So I just kept replaying the game.
You know the whole point of playing as his son was to avenge his father's death?
*spoilers*
You get a secret stranger mission post-credits where you get to duel the old man who hunted John and kill him

The eniding is indeed bittersweet for a few reasons, besides only one can win, and leaves questions unanswered but its done properly and not riddled with plotholes.
Its a great movie and left me feeling satisfied. Unlike ME3

Exactly.
Which has now led to the series being picked back up by the new studio (343i) which looks like they are going to try and refresh Halo with the new trilogy. Maybe the same is coming for ME, but I think I'd rather a to be continued... ending DLC rather than another Shepard trilogy. He's been through enough lol.

Alan Wake also springs to mind, the First Darkness game's ending was a good end ot the story.
Really, there are plenty of ways to make a sad/bittersweet ending good, the simplist being making it flow naturally off the other 99% of the game.

On The Beach. Ava Gardner, watching as Gregory Peck goes back to certain death in his sub, while she prepares to take her own suicide pills. Shots of a completely deserted Melbourne, and the end of human life on Earth.
Amazing film and the ending stays with you forever.

Also gotta love the closure, hero as far as anyone but Cortana and MC know gave his life for the galaxy, humans say they will rebuild elites say they will also rebuild and go kill the rest of the brutes, Keith David says words and then *BAH DA DA Legendary planet*,Orange Tee wrote...

Was a pretty sad story throughout and it was a very sad ending, but it wasn't total despair, it was all for a purpose. I think Bungie pretty much nailed the ideal bittersweet ending in Reach.
