Amadeus. True, it's based on history, but it ends perfectly regardless. I realize that's an unfair standard to set against Bioware, but in relative terms, they struck me as the best video game storytellers before this ending fiasco.

'The First Law' by Joe Abercrombie. Both the Locke Lamora books by Scott Lynch. Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road'. 'The Time Traveller's Wife' by Audrey Nifnegger. 'One Day' by David Nicholls. 'District 9'.

Heck, find heaps more here: http://tvtropes.org/...ttersweetEnding

Red Dead Redemption. I use that example a lot when comparing "bittersweet" and "godawful".

Did anyone actually dislike the ending to RDR? I really wonder if that's possible.

I disliked it. I stopped playing the moment I was forced to make John Marston go out the front door and die.

I thought it was too cliche and no longer had respect for the game.

Braveheart wasn't sad. I liked the fact that Mel Gibson stopped making an arse of my national hero. Woad and kilts my ar*se.
Nice sentiment in the movie, but about as realistic and factual as Fox News in the US.

That was more like a cliffhanger unless you really liked the old guy, can't remember his name.

Technically more sweet than bitter with the last couple scenes, but I love the way they ended Farscape. It was a satisfying conclusion, and the payoff with the end-all be-all mythical weapon was just AWESOME. And they killed a beloved character, but made his death awesome and fitting for his character.

Also gotta add my vote for Cowboy Bebop. "Bang."

Games
Darksiders - Might be stretching the "bittersweet", you accomplish your goals, but the game ends with you calling down the other 3 horsemen because you're going to have the combined forces of Heaven and Hell chasing after you.
Alan Wake - You wind up saving your wife by sacrificing yourself.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - You sacrifice the good in your soul to save the woman you love...only to find Satan pulling the strings. After killing him, you find that you can't save your wife, after all, and all your fighting has only given you one last conversation with her.
Halo: Reach - Other people have said it, but I'll say it as well. Your entire squad dies...one by one...until ultimately you die as well. But you get to see that hope, even if you don't know how the rest of the games turn out...

I started to give a list of my (bittersweet ending) movies at one point, but came up with about a dozen or so just by going through the first 1/7th of my movies.

If we couldn't play as John at the end, why not give us some random character skins instead? I'd enjoy it much more if I could ride around as Bonnie during SP free roam.

Since we're already spoiling the RDR ending, there's an important story reason as to why you continue as Jack (though I wasn't a fan of the character either). The story isn't over until Jack tracks down and kills Edgar Ross to avenge his father's death. That's when the credits finally roll. It also adds an additional touch of sadness in that, despite John's attempts to leave his past behind and give his son a normal life, Jack ended up following in his father's footsteps anyway.

Deadly Premonition? I tried that when it came out & I stopped after the 1st chapter. I still hear that stupid background music in my head!!

Neverwinter Nights 2 and its first expansion, Mask of the Betrayer, both deserve a mention here. MotB especially, because while it had a secret "happy" ending, I didn't find it in my first playthrough and still felt a sense of closure, despite knowing that my character was going to be effectively damned to limbo for the rest of eternity.

Sonic Adventure, E-102 Gamma's ending.  Depending on whether you believe the theory that Flicky the bird actually was Gamma, or that Flicky was merely Gamma's power source, this ending was either very bittersweet or downright soulcrushing.

I'm a sucker for happy endings but FFX's ending is one of my all time favorites. It's an example of an extremely well executed bittersweet ending.

Well said, FFX had a brilliant yet sad ending

He was killing himself. He knew his family would never be safe as long as he was alive. He wasn't going out in a blaze of glory, it wasn't an epic last stand, it was a sacrifice.
