Sad/Bittersweet Endings That Didn't Suck

Final Fantasy X
Shadow of the Colossus
Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (before sequels)
Kingdom Hearts (before sequels)
Dragon Age: Origins
Im sure there are more i cant remember right now.
Still, i think the drama of FFX sacrifice was what Bioware was going for with ME3 ends, but failed horribly.

Did anyone actually dislike the ending to RDR? I really wonder if that's possible.
I did. Becaue Jack and Abigail annoy the heck outta me, and I hate playing as Jack after the end. But the deal with John, I actually liked and thought it was well done.
If we couldn't play as John at the end, why not give us some random character skins instead?I'd enjoy it much more if I could ride around as Bonnie during SP free roam.
I didn't like playing as Jack either, but from an artistic standpoint it was something I've never seen before, and something you can only do in a videogame. It was beautiful.
Jack is annoying as all hell though, and his voice is stupid. You may have grown a beard, but you're not fooling me.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That's how you do bittersweet.
I vote Joss Whedon for the new ME3 ending. Lol.
Edit: Though, I never got why they killed off Wash randomly like that. I thought maybe because Alan Tudyk wanted to go into directing, instead...
Honestly he was the scariest choice. He is almost never in a combat scenario, you always expect him to be one of the last one standing. There was no warning it just suddenly happened and there is lots of jaws on the floor with O.O eyes.
All of this. When I first bumped into the bittersweet debate I immediately thought about that funeral scene. It was brilliant.

RDR. Another one. I was so shocked at how brutally they killed off Marston.
But the point of these endings being good, is that they're tragic. You knew it wasn't going to be a ride into the sunset. And you got to, pretty much, see what happened to everyone of importance in the game in a way that MADE SENSE in regards to that character.
And also, these characters weren't really YOUR characters. You don't get to decide, really, how Tommy or John acted; what they said; what they wanted. Your were, really, just the puppeteer. In Mass Effect you decide everything; so a dialogue choice is YOUR dialogue; a friendship is YOUR friendship; a romance is YOUR romance; etc.
BioWare did an ending that didn't pay off in any regard. Not to mention this was a trilogy, where hope and expectation for various resolutions was much higher than a one-off game.

Halo Reach had an outstanding bittersweet ending. THAT is how a studio sends out a big franchise with a bang.

8. Fallout 1
9. Silent Hill 2
10. Final Fantasy Tactics
the reason they did not suck is because they ALL MADE SENSE ........ apart from halo 3 none of the halo endings ever made sense.
all those games had bittersweet endings because they all had elements of the main game and it fluidicly ran with the game it was for.
BUT theres speculation about red dead's ending, we see him charge out taking all the guys out then the next scene we see his grown up son next to the graves of his mum and dad and uncle.
the ending is that his dad did survive the onslaught which is hinted at in a rumours of a red dead redemption 2 game in the past 7 or 8 months.

I haven't experienced an ending as confusing, ambiguous, and downright disappointing ending as this game's.

Halo: Reach.
Was a pretty sad story throughout and it was a very sad ending, but it wasn't total despair, it was all for a purpose. I think Bungie pretty much nailed the ideal bittersweet ending in Reach.
Definitely a bittersweet ending. I love the idea of the hero going out fighting and Reach did it perfectly. I hate the way Bioware made Shepard go out though. Just so many things wrong...

Sonic Adventure, E-102 Gamma's ending. Depending on whether you believe the theory that Flicky the bird actually was Gamma, or that Flicky was merely Gamma's power source, this ending was either very bittersweet or downright soulcrushing.
Damn, it's been so long since I played Sonic Adventure DX or even the original SA that I completely forgot about Gamma's ending. Explosion was a bit over the top though.

Yes, they beat Sauron and saved the world, however, the world was forever changed...the elves all left, Men took over, and Frodo never fully healed and had to leave. I still get misty reading the ending.
