Lots of good one here already.

One other I personally liked was Bioshock 2.

Dunno if someone mentioned it already, but Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. God, if they hadn't released the sequels that would've been an awesome stand-alone game all by itself.

Also, His Dark Materials.

Fallout 1, oh yes. The perfect bittersweet ending. And even there you had a choice in the end, you could shoot the Overseer while he's on his way back to the Vault. That would be Full Renegade right there, folks.

Also, kinda bittersweet (and a big downer, actually) is Dead Space ending. Really climactic, gave a crapload of answers while still leaving place for 'lots of speculation!' Not spoiling.

Also the all of the 'crew member dies' endings in Mass Effect 2 are bittersweet, the biggest one being the ultimate screw up with Shepard dying.

StarCraft 2, too! Getting the woman back, but killing an old friend.

In the perspective of the sequel, Diablo I had a bittersweet ending. Your hero (later known as The Wanderer) defeats the Prime Evil Diablo and gets his soulstone. In order to stop Diablo from coming back, the protagonist stabs himself with the soulstone, cursing himself for a lifelong battle with the devil himself. Which he eventually loses in Diablo II. Sweet, sweet moments of awesome.

Even Left 4 Dead, the game that many folks think has absolutely no story behind it, has a complete bittersweet ending, where one of the survivors canonically dies.

Of course let's remember Half-Life 2 (before the Episodes) and later H-L2: Ep2. With bittersweet so bitter, that it's on the boundary of a downer.

I can go like this forever, but I don't want to be even more boring.

Night of the Living Dead. Bonus points for the hero being completely wrong, the nominal antagonist being completely correct - and it not being about racism.

Charlotte's Web.

Also, I have to sigh and say that they might just have pulled it off in this, had they cut from Shepard and Anderson sharing their moment to whatever sparkly cinematic they had in mind to show the damned superweapon doing it's thing. Well, better custscenes than the ones we got, obviously, but still - pretty much anything suitably destructive or wallopy would have worked.

On RDR: the moment I went into quickdraw mode and counted how many bad guys were outside my barn, then how many I could reasonably kill before I exited the mode, that was the moment I realised how much respect you could have for computer game storytelling.

That was actually a bad ending, because it was a terrible cliffhanger and left open a ton of questions.

While we're on joss whedon, Dr Horrible's sing along blog is a clinic on how to set up and deliver a sad ending and have it make a very clear point. Wouldn't trade that ending for anything.

Mafia. Oblivion with the Shivering Isles DLC

I was going to do a movie list, but frankly there are way too many. Most Post Apocalyptic movies, most Film Noir, most Gangster movies and most Cyberpunk movies for a starter.

I was going to mention The Thing though (someone beat me to it), because I wanted to add that when Anderson and Shepard are sitting around after dealing with TIM it made me think of The Thing. Another way to point out how it would have been comparatively better to finish it there.

Red Dead Redemption got me choked up with serious man tears. One of my favorite games of all time and it really had a lot to do with its ending; fit so well.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was an excellent example of how to properly wrap-up multiple long standing story archs into a cohesive narrative. A bit overlong perhaps but I liked it. Very ''Lord of the Rings'' like in the way it was done.

Fallout 3 had a decent ending for what it was. I just didn't like that it effectively locked you out of doing any more quests. Kind of counter-intuitive to the game structure. That's probably why they retconned it with Broken Steel.

Red Dead Redemption is the first game I can remeber I really liked the ending in a long time. Just wish I could played alittle longer with him before the ending. Who knew the maker of grand theft auto could come up with a better ending then bioware. :o

Trying to think of another ending but to be honest Red Dead Redemption is the last ending that has stuck with me. That says more about me then anything else :P

Deus Ex - I know its basically the same as ME3's endings but they work in a cyberpunk game, just wonder why ME3 has a cyberpunk ending despite being not even remotely cyberpunk.

Movie wise, bittersweet and/or sad endings I've enjoyed:

Cast Away: I have never been so emotionally devastated over a volleyball. Poor Wilson...

The Last Samurai: Katsumoto's death is still one of the saddest things I've seen in cinema in a long time.

The Green Mile: "I'mma 'fraid of the dark." That still gets me...

A River Runs Through It: The scene where Norman has just told his parents of his younger brother's death is powerful in its ability to convey so much emotion through the use of silence.

Munich: There are parts of this movie that are soul crushingly powerful in how vulnerable they make their characters. In particular, the scene towards the end where Eric Bana's character has been reduced to such a nervous and paranoid wreck that he tears of his bed sheets and sleeps in the closet out of fear.

Gladiator: Maximus is finally at peace, Rome is free and all it cost him was his life.

3:10 to Yuma: After resisting temptation after temptation to let the bandit Ben Wade go, Civil War veteran Dan Evans commits to getting Wade all the way to the titular train. After a prolonged gun fight, Evans if fatally shot by Wade's second in command attempting to rescue Wade. In response Wade shoots his follower, as he has come to respect Evans' resolve and commitment to getting Wade to the train and commits himself to honoring that resolve.

Books:

Charlotte's Web: While Wilbur lives, Charlotte dies soon after the fair, yet her children live on.

Lord of the Flies: The kids are finally rescued from the island, but after so much death and barbarism is there any real hope for them to ever return to normal life?

A Painted House

To Kill a Mocking Bird

The LotR movies:
First: Boromir dies against the Uruk hai Lurtz, Gandalf seems do die in the fight against the Balrog
Second: Haldier and his soldiers die during the battle of Helm's Deep
Third: Theoden and most of the riders of Rohan die during the battle of Gondor against the Oliphants

But at the end Mordor and Isengard are defeated.

Suikoden series have a lot of bittersweet endings. (Hello Suikoden V's perfect ending!)
Final Fantasy X. (Small mention for XIII's ending.)
Tales of the Abyss (Quite emotional, but ended up being a good ending after all.)
Pokémon Black & White (N's story was so beautifully done, I couldn't help but cry for his new found happiness.)

Books count? Try "The Wreck of the River of Stars". From the title you know its not going to be good so that's not a spoiler.

I'm usually in the minority but loved Halo: Reach's ending. It's pretty damn sad but heroic as hell.
