Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

But at least those holographic gods were alluded to since the 1st game, not invented in the last 5 minutes.

I strongly advise you to read the comic, it's even better than the movie.
Actually, the movie, at least for me, is very similar to ME3 - 99% of it is amazing, but they screwed up the ending, although the inconsistensies at the end of Watchmen are minor, and I just hate it that it's completely different than the comic when the rest of the movie was so faithful.

But I realize that this isn't about Watchmen, so I'll stop rambling here.

I'm usually in the minority but loved Halo: Reach's ending. It's pretty damn sad but heroic as hell.

Not at all. The whole game is like the king kong movie in the sense you know that they all die, but the last few min. where you watch 6 fight off those elites to the very end.....well you cant be help at least noding in pride at it.

Read Dead Redemption is the king as far as video games are concerned. It suits the sad, almost depressing theme of the game, all the while being sufficiently badass and heroic to constitute a satisfying grand finale.

Star Trek Deep Space Nine. Captain gathers the races to battle a seemingly unbeatable foe, and makes the ultimate sacrifice in the final episode (WAIT A MINUTE ....)
The ending was bitter sweet, but there was a beautiful montage at the end showing all of the characters journey over the previous seven years.

As previously mentioned, Watchmen, 3:10 to Yuma and Cowboy Bebop.

I would also add the PC game Mafia. Remember that? Came out around the time of GTA3 but was largely forgotten by the mainstream. Such a shame, it had an excellent story.
In the end, you end up betraying the mafia, kill your best friend in a boss battle and go into witness protection for ratting out the whole family.
The final scene takes place like 30 years later, you're working in your flower garden when two guys in trench-coats pull up to your house, say "Mr. Saliari sends his regards" and shoot you dead!

I don't get how so many people loved Red Dead Redemption's ending. I thought it was poorly handled Why did the Marshal's send an army after me even though I did everything they wanted me to and had moved on to living my life in peace? Why didn't I go with my family? Why do I have to play as that go forsaken kid afterwards and why is his revenge sequence so awful?

Ooo Nice list, Metal Gear 4 and Final Fantasy X are among my favorite games. True, the ending was bittersweet but was still pretty amazing. I think I cried for both. However all those games are very linear, forcing a bittersweet ending upon a game all about choice seems rather lackluster.

If we do everything perfect amongst all three games, I feel an ending for such a dynamic game like mass effect should reflect that.

Watchmen is my favorite example of a well executed, bittersweet ending.

Life on Mars (UK version, not the car crash that was the US version). Terribly sad, terribly happy, and full of carefully handled ambiguity as to the "truth" of the ending. It was just wonderful.

Oh, by the way, I forgot something: Nearly every dramatic work by William Shakespeare. A few examples:

Hamlet: Everyone is dead, but old Hamlet is avenged and Fortinbras might even be a good king.
Titus Andronicus: Everyone is dead, but justice is served (mostly) and Andronicus' son is the new emperor.
Romeo and Juliet: The lovers are dead, but their families finally stop fighting.

Th 'ultimate sacrifice' ending in DA:O did bittersweet well. BW apparently forgot that 'bittersweet' only works when the player feels accomplished, which is the opposite of what most people felt after the ending of ME3.
