Are archers very effective in this game? how does a ranged rogue fair against a melee rogue in terns of damage and effectiveness?

It's a different type of hero. Ranged has more stuff to support your party like stuns, armour reduction etc, while melee can be focused only around damage, or go bard and support with songs. It's kinda up to you. If you ask if it's a nice and useful class to play, then I'd say it's useful and is nice, if you like archers in general.

in terms of damage output the melee rogue is much more effective. archers have somewhat poor damage performance in this game.

ranged characters obviously have alot of other advantages simply in safety and flexibility. having a ranged damage dealer is a very good idea. mages tend to work excellently. archers can be made to work well also.

for a ranged rogue you'll find that the character DRAMATICALLY underperforms in the early game. absolutely terrible until about level 12. once you've got high enough Dexterity and Cunning scores (and the Lethality talent) you'll be able to do respectable damage. still less than melee but the damage gap won't be so glaring as it was at earlier levels.

and some of the ranged attacks are very nice. again, not great for pure damage, but have some nice uses. Scattershot is spectacular for disrupting crowds. Shattering Shot is both a large armor debuff and it can knock a mob flat on their backside so it has some nice disruptive elements as well. Also it will Shatter a frozen or petrified target, so good way to support a mage. Arrow of Slaying is somewhat weak during the early game but at high levels it can deal a huge burst of several 100 damage all at once which is a great way to take an enemy mage out of a fight right away.

but if all your looking for is high end DPS, you have to go melee. archer is always less damage than melee.

So far, my rogue is only level 8 I believe. I have Ranger, and plan on getting duelist. I also plan on going Ranger with Leliana, who I use frequently.

That being the case, I forsee quite a few advantages here. Firstly, Leliana is pretty much an all out support character, with her songs and all the archer abilities. Not to mention, the Ranger ability to summon an animal companion. For my character, he not only gets the pet, but if I do bychance get melee'd, I can just switch weapon sets and wail away. Biggest benefit I see here is a 6(with pets) player party vs. 4.

As has been stated, they are totally different playing styles and group roles though. Archer's a support class in the fact that a lot of they're abilities debuff in some form (- to defense and attack, stuns, etc.). A dw melee rogue is all about sneaking for the first crit hit, then doing everything in your power to get behind the target.

The way I like to look at it, is that if you're going archer and don't go Ranger, you're essentially gimping yourself. Whereas the goal is not necessarily to do as much dps as a melee character, I feel like half a character without the pet there to make up the loss.

In a regular fight and at earlier levels DW are probably more useful but archers have two incredible abilities: scatter shot and arrow of slaying. No friendly fire CC + upward reports of 1k in damage, respectively.

Out of the box, the archer vs. DW feel like two very balanced trees. It's just the rest of the weapon types and magic trees that need work...
