We'll see how Bioware handles TOR before we can judge their ability to do an MMO

As Bioware is demonstrating with SW:TOR, the MMO genre doesn't necessarily mean you're moving away from a story driven narrative with excellent voice acting.

I've played WoW and honestly, it can be fun, after you do the same crap over and over again each day and sometimes more than twice a day though, it gets OLD faster than I can try to re-vitalize my interest in it. It also happens to eat up 4 hours of time if you participated in raids, and they expected you to toss real-life to play a game with them(not all but some.) In essence WoW is fantastic....it's the millions of players that start to muck it up in a HUGE way by screwing the emersion/gameplay/discovery/accomplishment aspects at the very least....
If anything, it should be given some serious thought...popping out a new style DA MMO could go as badly as Age of Conan or worse if done incorrectly.
Maybe so you don't miff the folks that don't want to play online you can have a single player campaign with the standard compliment of NPC party members to play with whilst people who want to play with other people can log in to servers. More complicated as it is essentially 2 games at that point, but at least you'd be able to keep both crowds happy as long as the quality is as consistant as DA:O.

Anyone notice how the Warcraft universe got ever more shallow and lame after introduction of MMO? Would you really want to have that happen with DA? I know I don't
DA is so special as it is because your PC has a solid, interesting story -in an MMO he/she would just be one in a million and great chars like Zevran/Bann Teagan/Morrigan/Alistair would be reduced to an exclamation mark above their head and your interactions reduced to "Kill 50 drkspwn I gief 10g. KKthnxbai" while you'd have your screen filled with "LFG Flemth can heal or tank" "1g pls" "will f***k 4 g"
I totally disapprove (-70)

Using WoW to judge a possible DA:O MMO is like using some violently psychotic, moronic, crack addict, paedophile teenager as an emotive example to determine whether all human reproduction is a practice worth continuing.
Personally i agree with the person who said they would like to see DA:O explored more in a single player format BEFORE a possible MMO version, i agree with this because IMO at present the DA:O world is not developed enough to support an MMO incarnation. Why would anyone want to limit DA:O to single player long-term voluntarily though ? Same as everything else, if it's done wrong it's gonna be bad but if done right it could be great. The one thing that would make it fail is RUSHING it to MMO form before it's established the required depth and solidity in the less-complex single player format.

FYI, this is a topic about how people could enjoy the DA:O universe in MMO format. Not about Bioware going to make this an MMO and phase out DA as a singleplayer experience. Duh. Get a grip. Forums and their trolls..

The 'nay' sayers are so hypocrite it's not even funny. All the 'against' arguments assume Bioware would either replace current DA:O with a MMO, or would stop making singleplayer experiences alltogether. "I don't like it so I'm going to do my damn best to come up with whatever obnoxious selfish reasons to stop you from having it". That about sums it up. .
Eh, that's a bit exaggerating. I do disagree with the idea of making DA-MMO instead of single-player sequel and of course I realize I can't stop or persuade Bioware doing the MMORPG, duh. Don't be silly.
But what I can do is give my opinion as a fan of the game and as a customer, wether it matters or not.
Idea of DA-MMO is interesting enough. However, there are drawbacks, like immature players, bots and goldsellers, lack of immersion... and what I mean by that is the elements that completely destroy the roleplaying experience, it's really hard to get into the game when there's a ripples in the athmosphere like; "omg!!!111 u noob!! lol kthxbye lol". Imagine if Tolkien had such in his books.
And no, I wouldn't want to spent countless hours collecting enough XP to raid some boss over and over again, so that I could get a better gear for the next raid-boss, which I again raid countless times for a better gear, and so forth...
Rich stories! Interesting characters! Witty dialogue! And heartthrobbing events! Those are the things I want... and so far, Bioware has delivered those in it's singleplayer RPG's. I would be suprised if The Old Republic could deliver the same.

They haven't demonstrated that yet. And it hardly matters if they attempt to create a story if all of the other players ruin the atmosphere.
I would be very disappointed if they DID make an MMO, because MMOs tend to kill the rest of the franchise they're tied to.

Indeed. Look at Warcraft for example. Once a shining example of computer game awesomeness...
Then WoW came along and all Warcraft is known for these days is its vast array of n00bs and idiots.
A Dragon Age MMO would not be desirable in my opinion. Multiplayer DA, sure, but not an MMO. Maybe something like Neverwinter Nights, or at least a similar idea?

A multiplayer facility along the lines of NWN, yes for sure, for me that's the whole point of a toolset.
MMO, no thank you, the drawbacks far outweigh any positives there might be for me.

Now, lots of Permanent Worlds for a reasonable number of players in several categories like Action/Story/Action-story/PVP madness/HARDCORE ROLE PLAYING ... that would be awesome!
"It all happened before! It will all happen again!" ... If only Cylons were as good in prophecies as they are good in making hot Number Sixes... damn gud vid... I can't wait for ME2 now!!!

But not in a form where you run into players everywhere (especially not the annoying ones or the goldsellers) while all the NPC's fade into the background, becoming nothing but questgivers.
A big part of the beauty of DA:O comes from the NPC's, THEY are what make thedas alive, they are NOT roomdressing (well, some of them are, but even those have been worked out better than the questgivers you encounter in an MMO). The better quality of NPC's and the lack of other players also makes the world created more immersive. An NPC won't start blabbing about his mom crashing her car. Things just feel more real because NPC's won't go out of character.
Lack of other players also means you won't have to "keep up" with them. You won't feel forced to do things you don't feel like doing to keep in line with other peoples' progress. You play because you enjoy playing, not because you want to enjoy playing. That seems an odd statement, but there is a slight but crucial difference between the two.
Another problem I have with MMO's is the requirement to group with others to enjoy some content. In a single player game, you can see *all* content by yourself. In an MMO, you *need* others to even access some content. The only game I can remember that actually had a good solution around this was Diablo, with its scaling difficulty. You could do everything in a group, but you could also do everything on your own. DA could circumvent this with a mix of PC/NPC partymembers, while keeping the party size to 4. A group consisting of 4 PC's would still have a slightly easier time though, but things would probably still be "in check".
So overall? I'd say yes to co-op and online play features, but I'd ignore the game completely if it turned MMO.

It seems that a good deal of the gameplay in WoW is better handled as offline play (solo questing / grinding) or as a small-scale co-op session (instanced dungeons). Even PvP doesn't necessarily have to be massively multiplayer.
But what do I know? I have no interest in playing WoW (despite having watched people play and listened to them geeking out about it) yet that is arguably irrelevant. WoW is more than successful enough without my money.

I would love if it was Co-Op but making it an mmorpg would ruin it at so many levels.
