It seems to me players are against the idea of a Dragon Age MMO simply based on the assumption that it would inevitably be doomed to becoming a WoW clone. WoW has its shortcomings and whose to say Bioware couldn't do it better?

That sums up nicely a point i've been trying to get noticed for a while now.  Saying MMO'sare doomed to failure based purely on previous ones faults is like standing in the age of the dinosaurs shouting that flying creatures will never have feathers just because pterodactyls dont.  Not sure if that analogy works for everyone so i'll provide something for those to whom it doesnt.....  SWTOR gna be teh sex btw lolz !!1!

I am too educated and I respect myself too much to share anything with a bunch of "zomg lewt" powergaming boys. My definition of online play stops at real time strategy games where you do not have to talk to anyone. Just get in the virtual arena, do your best according to SKILL and try to win the match. Plus I do not want to be in need of anybody (I am referring to elitist guilds ) to see the entire content of a game that I bought.

Enough said.

I'm not. I, like many others it seems, would hate to see to the world, the lore and the story to be destroyed by a MMO. I simply don't believe that a MMO can be done without hurting the setting and possible future single-player games. SW:TOR might prove me wrong but I doubt it. All the players need to feel suitably "epic" and "heroic". Just imagine 10000 Grey Wardens running around Thedas, killing the same Archdemon over and over again. Ugh. I believe Dragon Age could very well turn into a fun, interesting and maybe even revolutionary MMO but I would never be able to look at the franchise the same way again. It would effectively be ruined for me.

People here are not saying MMOs are doomed to fail. People here believe MMO+RPG are doom to fail.
Just imagine what are the elements that make RPGs enjoyable, the story, the consistent lore, the lasting-meaningful choice that can be made, and  the atmosphere.

Now, try to put thousands of strangers with a great number of them who care non but loots, properly very immature and illiterate, or pro-gammers who push you to play with utmost efficency at all times in all the elements you want in an RPG. You think it's done? No. The game's atmosphere will not only be broken, but also the lores and plots shall bow to the supremacy of gameplay and balance. Not to mention the moment you kill the Archdemon and here it is next week. Heros of Ferelden wherever you set foot. So much for meaningful impacts of choices.

So yes, this is basically what I meant and I suppose many of our fellow forumites mean as to how MMO+RPG does not work. MMO is all well and good, but keep your hands where they belong.

We all have a troll in our hearts.

To some of you arguing on SWtOR, keep in mind it's not out yet, and EA can do terrible things to games and companies alike. PLUS the hair styles in the gameplay videos suck balls.

Unless you play DA:O once and never again then i guarantee the Archdemon is going to still going to be there next week, in two hours or in fact any time you choose to hit that "new game" button ever again.

MMO on the other hand, you kill the same boss, who has a significant postion in the world and setting again and again within the same universe for loots/achievement. See the difference?

You completely miss the point that you are obsessing about the presently incarnate form of MMO mixing with the presently incarnate form of DA:O rather than a potentially completely new and different type of MMO format combining with the next evolution of DA:O in some theoretical future scenario to produce something which appeals to you rather than the bastard child of DA:O and WoW which is all that you seem able to comprehend or imagine and which repulses you greatly even as you strangely focus on it to the exclusion of any useful speculative discussion.

Oh? perhaps you on the other hand could enlighten us all with some imagination of a potentially completely new and different type of MMO format combining with the next evolution of DA:O in some theoretical future scenario and see how that would be popular and profitable as a MMO.

The gaming style might differ, but the foundation of MMO can never combine well into a RPG. What comes out as a good thing to you would never have what attract RPG players in the first place, the elements I mentioned and more. Do you deny the nature of MMO contradicts with all that?

And yes, while I have next to no hope MMO+RPG could be good, I still have faith in Bioware's creativity and am anxious to see how SWtOR will turn out to be.

Well, I'm not the guy you were talking too, but why does it have to be a blight you are fighting? Why do you even need big bad bosses with names and loot? I mean it works for current styled MMOs because they ry (and often fail) at being story-based. Stories have to follow a certain progression, and stories have to have an end. So if you change your focus and shift from a Story-based focus to an Objective-based Focus within a dynamic world you can change this. For thos who want the story, that is simple.. you give them a story, but you make it dynamic to the events in the world... don't assign bosses to beat, farm, and loot. Assign objectives, missions, and let people explore.

Here is a quick idea for the setting of the game. Orlais and Ferelden are at war some years after the events of Origins (presumably long enough that Anora has died of old age or she gets assainated by the Crows). You can join the conflict from 4-5 sides, with multiple classes, paths, and decisions to make with your character. Those sides are Orlaisian, Ferelden, Antivan, Dalish, and/or Quinari. From there... it's your choice how to play it. Sure there will be story elements and "quest" elements of normal RPGs... but it will largely be up to the players themselves to govern the world. There will be border conflicts and skirmishes, struggles for power, and so on. perhaps even a system that allows players to fight for and earn titles (like Arl, Bann, or Sten), giving them land and troop benefits and a greater role in the world to play (there should be many of these positions, and they should be ursurpable but only through constant struggles). At this point, it's in the players hands on how they want to play it. Do they want to be a Rogue Ferelden Soldier who defected ro Orlais? Do they want to be an Antivan/Quinari/Dalish Mercenary? Do they want to be a rebel element within their own country? Do they want no part of the Wars front line and prefer to follow certain story elements to learn about their world, the conflict at large, and possibly information about a future blight? Do they not even want to do that and play the part of a profiteering Trader who makes, steals. buys, and sells goods for profit?

If any developer is capable of putting the game into the players' hands (with minimal guidance), it should be BioWare. That being said, there is something to be said for structure to a game. It needs a point, so they'd have to write and VA (preferably well) a lot of content. Almost too much content. This is why games like this aren't made. There are practical reasons as to why the WoW format persists, despite it's flaws.

MMO's are destroying games' lore and storylines in games, and, MMO's are way too long and way too time consuming, and, MMO's are way too boring nowadays.

Opinion. Opinion. Opinion.

While I happen to agree, in part, with your opinions, they are still just that and aren't really relevant to the discussion at hand. MMOs can be boring at times, especially where grinding and leveling are concerned. Long, drawn out, and pointless/unrewarding quests are a problem in standard MMORPGs, too. That isn't to say that they can't be fun. It really depends on the game, the developer, the setting(/story), and the player. Voicing your opinion as fact doesn't really help the conversation. Only I get to voice my opinion as fact, as you can see by my long arse post above. :P

From there... it's your choice how to play it. Sure there will be story elements and "quest" elements of normal RPGs... but it will largely be up to the players themselves to govern the world. The blight is but an example. If it's largely up to the players to govern the world, where is the atmosphere of Ferelden? I met too many idiots or progress-monsters who don't care the slightest about stories/lore/atmosphere. How many land could be given to how many players? Where will loots come from? If they should be availiable to all and the ways to get them have to be repetitive in nature, either by slaying the same creature again and again, fighting skirmishes over and over, or monetary gains that at the end become ridiculous.
I see where you are getting and you only prove that MMO CANNOT be a good RPG, nor the other way around.

Not to mention some classes( yes, you goddamned mages!) are by lore overpowered or in fewer number. How will balance come in to place? A thousand mages this month and after a patch all become rogues?

Multiplayer, could be fun

MMO - NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWAAAAAYYYYYYYY, they'll just end up raping the story and the whole DA:O universe. God how I hate WoW and what Blizzard did to the awesome Warcraft universe.
