So I've spent way too much time trying out every possible companion combination for the rescue quest in Fort Drakon. Obsessive? Maybe, but it's been a hoot. I'm curious whom everyone here chose, and why. For RP reasons, I think picking Alistair would be a bad idea since he's too important to risk on that rescue mission, Sten stands out like a sore thumb, and Oghren is too crude. Leliana and Zevran probably have the most experience with this sort of thing.

What the different combinations do:

Oghren and Sten are, predictably, about as subtle as a punch in the guts and only manage to bluff the guards in certain conditions.

Most combinations are pretty boring and use the "making a delivery" excuse to get in. The exceptions are Dog + anyone else, any two of the three female companions, and, hilariously, Oghren + Zevran.

Wynne will use a cute variation of the delivery bluff, namely knitted scarves from the old ladies of Denerim for the "boys" in the fort. Letting her speak first to the two guards and then letting the other companion she's with do the second bluff can lead to some amusing lines.

Dog + anyone else is obviously a "delivering this mabari" bluff. When he makes the first bluff, he pathetically plays sick which never fails to get you in. When the other companion makes the first bluff and Dog the second, he ... pees on a guard, much to the amusement of the other guard. :P The captain won't believe that certain companions are dog-handlers, but letting Dog do the "talking" works even with those companions.

A female rescue squad will dress up as Chantry priests. Needless to say, Morrigan is less convincing than Wynne and Leliana, but has some amusing lines anyway. Just don't let her speak first, or to the captain.

Lastly, Oghren and Zevran dress up in "noble" clothes and pretend to be a circus act. That had me in stitches as much as the peeing Dog. And in this combination, even Oghren can fool the guards and captain. The result is one of my favourite humorous momnts in the game:

"You can perform in the main hall on the condition that the dwarf keeps his pants on. That's non-negotiable."

*cackles*

Even if you never use Zevran and Oghren otherwise, and even though it may not be the most logical combo, I recommend giving it a shot just for amusement value. Try letting only Zevran bluff, or only Oghren, or any combination of both. All work and are fun.

I think Sten's fun to bring into Fort Drakon. The line he delivers when he opens your cell is absolutely sweet.

The three guys use the circus routine if you bring any two of them, so even if it's Oghren and Sten they make a pretty pathetic attempt at it. Sten's not very good at bluffing, tho. Dog is the clear winner in the Prison Raid Contest.

Morrigan, tho, does not pull off much in regards of being a Chantry priestess. But, for some reason, either her or Leliana in the priest robe seems kinda hot to me...

Dog and Sten are hilarious to and sten can actually bluff the door guards in this situation by saying "i'm a giant delivering a wardog, either I'm going to besiege this fort or I'm making a delivery, pray its not the first." or something along those lines but one must let the dog bluff second, love that line the captain says, "ooo is that a pure-bred mabari?"

ahahahaha

Leliana/Dog is hilarious as well when she bluffs the gate guards. During the second bluff, she ignores them completely and starts doing the "Who's a good dog? Oh yes, you are!" routine until they just give up and get the captain.

Sten and Zevran are hilarious too:

"Congratulations. You've succeed in putting us further away from the door than when we entered."

"Just watch the master assassin at work." (Or something along those lines)

"I hate to see a novice then."

So I ended the game but I never had this Captured quest. How do you get that?

I must sound awfully silly now.

Surrender to Ser Cauthrien during your attempt to rescue Queen Anora.

I actually enjoyed the warden escape more than the companion rescue. But my favorite companion rescue was Sten and Oghren... at least while it lasted.

Oghren: Well, the big guy there is a comedian. And I, uh.. I juggle swords.
Sten: ...On fire.
Guard: Fascinating. I think we'll pass.
Oghren: Ah, forget this. *attacks*"

Yeah, as I said these two are about as subtle as a fistful of knuckles. Heh. But I think my favourite combos are Oghren+Zevran for laughs and Wynne+Leliana because they (and Dog) are pretty much my constant companions, and Wynne's caution makes a a nice contrast for Leliana's excitement.

Seems like I really have to try some different combinations of that... I already peed my pants about Zevran and Morrigan, letting Zevran doing the bluffing about "delivering some items of a.... "personal"... kind" to the garrison commander, implying it was something naughty, which... of course, no guard wanted to know in detail, followed by Morrigans comments about his "cleverness"...

I didn't play it myself, but apparently the Revered Mother has quite the reaction to Sten. I was giggling to myself for ages watching the Youtube vid. ^.^

Aww man, I went and had myself and Alistair escape from the fort. Now I'm wishing I hadn't.

Oh well, always something new to try on current playthrough #2!

I can't imagine skipping this quest. I did Morrigan and Leliana together. Let Leliana talk the first time, but the prayer that Morrigan does scares the guards into letting you in (it's a riot!) and then after the captian, you talk to the guard at the far end of the big room with the guard.... (yeah, I got pretty far before they realized I wasn't supposed the be there with these 2) and let Morrigan talk to the last guard who just walks away and leaves her post thanks to Morrigan. But I am going to have to do other folks just for the fun of it. I just laughed myself to tears reading some of these. Looking forward...

Oh and Leliana gets the rev. mother to leave in a huff, all upset because they (the chantry) didn't think she could do it herself. I'm totally enjoying some of these...

Oghren: "Take the dog, they said. He'll get you in, they said."

I read somewhere that if you break yourself out and get to the front door (I assume violently) that party members are there saying they were about to rescue you or something. Is this true?

That's what I heard but it didn't happen to me. I broke out quietly with Alistair in guard uniforms and it never happened.

Zevran convincing the female sergeant that she should not waste her youth and beauty on barracks duty was also a fine moment.

I was actually able to walk out the front door when I tried to escape myself without having to fight at all. (I would've expected someone to say that it was a little unusual for a dwarf guard to be in Ft. Dakon...)

I just killed Ser Cautherine. Clearly, I missed all the fun. I'm definitely letting my companions spring me, next time.

Hmm I did the breaking out method. Where do you get the choice of breaking in or out? Seems like I missed out on some cool moments here.

I personally find it easiest to just persuade the guard to be vulnerable, knock his ass out, take an armor disguise in the armory, and then pretend I'm part of the new recruits unit. I basically just walk out of the fort. Requires high persuade though.

You have to say something like "I'm sure someone will come for us..." and then when Alistair asks which of your companions would be crazy enough to do that, you get to pick who you want to use.

I had the choice of waiting for my companions to rescue me or breaking out myself. I chose the latter. Got the guard with the key to come close, grabbed him and smashed his head in on the bars. That did the trick. The thing that bothered me was that my companions weren't captured too. They were A) complicit in my apparent crimes and B) they attacked Ser Cautherine too. Why were they set free? Whole thing never made much sense to me.
