I recently bought Mass Effect on Amazon for the PC. I use Steam for pretty much all my games, and wanted to add Mass Effect as a non-Steam game in my library. Each time I ran it, though, the game would crash immediatly. That is,  the Mass Effect logo pops up as the game boots, but as soon as what should be the BioWare logo begins to play, the first second of noise begins to repeat, and the screen stays black. The game does not respond and I'm forced to close it. I ran the game without Steam, and it worked fine. Running it as administrator didn't seem to fix any of my issues.

Strangly enough, I gave Steam a second chance (and told it to run the game itself, not the launcher), and it worked. After a couple hours of playing, I exited to the desktop and, later, tried to boot up the game again, but it began to crash again. So, it seems to be on and off. I did not have any issues while playing the game, so I'm not sure what it could be.

I should note that, while the game does "run" through Steam, the overlay does not appear; It only shows up in my friends list. I also have made minor modifications to the game (only changing the .ini files), but the crash appeared before and after I made the changes.

My computer is running on an Intel i5-2500k, four-core processor at 3.3 GHz, along with 8GB of dual-channel RAM, 1600 MHz. My graphics card is an EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 with the latest (296.10 WHQL) drivers. My audio is build-in to my motherboard; It's a Realtek, but I'm not sure what model or what the drivers are (if anyone can provide me with information on how to find these, I'm more than willing to provide them). My OS is Windows 7, 64-bit, Service Pack 1. I should be running DirectX 11.

Again, if you require more information, I'm  more than willing to provide it. Thanks again for your help!
