I've just started a new game and I noticed that for some reason Im getting no dialogue in game?
The background music and ambience seem to be working, but there is no talking of any kind. The characters themselves dont open their mouths. I tried turning on subtitle but that didnt work either, no sound and no subtitles.
Is this a known problem? Anyone know how i can fix it?

That's...
Odd.
Do you know how to grab your system specifications, namely your sound drivers?

Also I've just realised that the NPC names say something like dhb000_townguard rather than any kind of name...

No idea what would have caused your problems, but you could try and reinstall the game and see if that fixes it.

I am having the exact same problem. Its a fresh install. I patched the game to 1.01b before starting my first game. I am running Windows 7 64 bit, with Realtek HD audio as well. How the heck do you fix this?

Well, on the 360 I ran into something like that in the city elf. The priest's voice lines pop up after a few dialogue lines then it should. Also sometimes the voices don't come up, but the npcs start speaking normally after a few lines.

I have this problem now, all of a sudden. Already played the game for weeks, and all of a sudden the dialogue sound stops working. I do get the subtitles and characters move their mouth, the sound is just off. Settings is default so nothing there. Ambient sound and music works.
I also have windows 7 64 bit.

I have the same problem - Realtek HD / Vista-64 -no dialogue during cutscenes, no rear surround until the game begins; The rear speakers kick in at the point when you can control your character.
BTW, everything works fine in the character creation demo version, no problems with the dialogue track at all.

All issues Solved:
* Music only (stereo only) during cutscenes (no dialog audio nor dialog text nor choices).
* Strange item and npc name displays (something like cfg600cm_mouse).
I uninstalled the Character Creation Demo and the retail copy of Dragon Age Origins v1.01.
Restarted and reinstalled from dvd. Restarted and ran the update patch.
Restarted and everything works in surround, cutscene dialog plays perfectly, text displays properly, and choices are available.

I have fixed this issue by uninstalling and performing a fresh reinstal,
Make sure that once you reinstal you load up the game before patching. As far as I can tell this was the cause of my issues as I didnt give the config program a chance to properly run. I also installed all the patches individually just to make sure,
you could also try EAs customer support suggestion:
In order to solve your issue you will need to lower a Hardware Sound Acceleration setting on your computer to "basic". To do this, follow these steps:
· Click the Start button in the bottom left hand corner of your Desktop.
· Click on "Run".
· Erase any text already in the run prompt.
· Type in: dxdiag
· Click the OK button.
· Select the sound tab at the top of the tool.
· Set the Hardware Sound Acceleration Slider to "Basic".
· Click "Exit" in the bottom right hand corner.
However I dont think this would have worked for me.
Good luck

I fixed the problem by doing a reinstall!! For once reinstalling fixes something... LOL. Anyway, in addition to what Clamp1978 said, I reinstalled the game and patched with the latest patch, but did not run the game before I patched. I guess it could go either way.
EA's Customer Support suggestion did not help (and rarely has it ever) fix the error for me.

Hmm have any of you that have the problem, download and installed the toolset and played around with it? This almost sounds like the campaign corruption that was going on to ppl who used the toolset and corrupted the single player campaign. Also do any of you have newly installed mods, possibly in common?

Same problem. When I change the language of the game through steam, the voices disappear. I don't realy feel like downloading 15 gigs all over again. It took me hours to have the dlc work properly, I'm not doing that again. Please help !

If you are using Steam, there is no other way than to redownload the required files for the new language.
