Weapon selection doesnt matter much as a human vanguard, since 70% or more of your damage comes from charge and nova. As long as you have half nova, you are fine with a cooldown speed of +120% or better. Burst weapons are best because you can fire a shot inbetween the charge and nova animations. Sustained fire weapons as a vanguard are a poor choice.

Ideally you never want to stop charge/nova in combat, so weapons which have a large clip and fast reload speed, as well as high burst damage are going to be the most effective.

You want to go
charge->nova->shot->nova->shot->charge
or
charge->nova->nova->shot->charge

Katana X. Decent shotgun that gives =191% cooldowns.

According to that the Diciple too has a little better DPS, and also the Wraith which has quite a bit better DPS.

Whoops, yeah, missed the disciple.  It does slightly (~3 better) dps.  I also hear it stuns, which could be useful.  I honestly haven't played with it enough to judge it properly.

DPS is the least important attribute you should be looking at for a Vanguard weapon. You want light weight, burst damage, and stagger. Something you can use from range is also nice.

Just to be clear, I'm talking about human novaguards.  I don't play drell/asari vanguard.  It's entirely possible shotgun are best for them, I have no idea.

For novaguards, burst damage and stagger are not particularly important since anytime you need burst damage or stagger, you can just charge-nova.  You need DPS against banshees and range for when charging would put you in a bad position.

For me, the difference between 200% cooldown and ~170% is negligible. Never equipped only a pistol and never will, sort of takes the point out of it for me.

Are you talking about human vanguards or asari/drell?

Maybe I'm readthing the sheet wrong, but I'm seeing a Carnifax with a DPS of 460.2-575.2 vs. the Spike thrower at 1280 - 1600.  Now I understand the Graal is not a light weapon, that's why it does more damage and why I'm giving up recharge speed.

Again, I would ask if this is human vanguards or asari/drell.  Because charge-nova invincibility spam is the best weapon for a novaguard by a wide margin.  I would rather go without any weapon at all than take higher cooldowns.

Disciple is sexy.

But I'm not a "proper" vanguard - I don't play human, prefer to play asari or drell (once I unlock the confounded thing!) and in more of a support/tactical manner.

Hm... interesting.  I will try this.  But is there really enough time in between novas to shoot without increasing your vulnerability frames?  Can you do that while standing in front of a prime/atlas or in the middle of pyros?

Disciple.

Because I might as well use some of the shotguns the RNG dumps on me instead of giving me something I could really use.

You will likely increase your vulnerability frames, which is why the first rotation is riskier then the second rotation. I generally keep left clicking so that a shot possibly goes off inbetween novas, then fire a real shot after my second nova before my shield drops, then charge again.

I'm talking human vanguard.  I might need to try hosting games because I've ended up dieing a lot due to charge not going off even though it's up and the target is right in front of me.  This has made my play in a way where I charge nova the early wave, but the later waves I tend to use my weapon more because I don't want to die or be that vanguard that's always down.

You really should.  I found hosting as a vanguard in gold games to be easier than non-host in silver games.  Irresponsive charge/nova is terrible.  And falling out of the map...  :crying:

I've never had the falling out of the map issue, or the floating one.  Speaking of falling off the map, I really wish that charging a mob and throughing them off the edge of the map was an instant kill.

Isn't it? I've knocked plenty of guys off the map (really easy on Giant when you can slap them right off when they jump in). They just fly away and die.

I don't know, seems like most of the thime they just pop back up a few seconds later.  It doesn't seem consistent.

Scimitar or Graal.
I love both: the first for fast action and the second for tactical play and spike damage.

Since a vanguard is normally in the faces of an enemy, a shotgun of some sort is usually best. Since cooldowns can be an issue, especially if you need a barrier recharge, the Disciple is the lightest shotgun around.

Disciple. Ridiculously light weight for a Shotgun, decent enough damage, okay-ish clipsize, and staggers non-shielded enemies. On my Novaguards I use this gun and nothing else, and it has done a pretty great job so far. The only issue I got with it is the slightly long reload time, which makes it difficult to reload in the heat of battle.

the ABSOLUTE best weapon on human vanguard is the falcon with cryo ammo PERIOD, even if your not the host and you get blanks its still the best. I go armor/barrier/shield kill with nova and damage/cd with charge so when a group of enemies are frozen around me i hit nova and they ALL die

Woah, talk about thread resurrection O_o

Anyway, back on topic, Disciple all the way. Almost got mine up to X now. Shotgun and heavy pistol while still having a 200% cooldown? Yes please! Also, the Disciple has great synergy with the Human Vanguard. The stagger buys me that little extra time for my cooldown, so intsead of having to dodge, I can deal damage. The reload is a little annoying, but if I reload just as I've charged, it finishes just about the same time as the enemies stop staggering.

Predator, Katana, and Carnifex are all cool for me. I'd give the Disciple a shot if I had it at a higher level.

In that order for Human, Drell and Krogan. While on my Asari I'll use the Vindicator, Carnifex or Paladin.

I think it depends on the vanguard.

Manguards want 200 CCs all the time, no matter what.
Kroguards probably want a shotty or high damage close combat weapon.
Asari/drell probably long range weapons?
