game is original release
on retail disc
Launcher says I have game version 1.00
Your hardware specs are:
Intel® Core i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz
8GB RAM display adapter NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB driver , its RAM, and its driver version isn't listed by number in the "launcher" summary screen but Direct X diag says it's 18.17.12.9573
sound adapter is Speakers / Headphones (IDT High Definition Audio CODEC) driver version 6.10.6302.0
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64-bit
No third party mods installed
Problem is: Shale not working properly. When I speak to him I get
the option to use the control rod or leave him alone. If I select the rod, the graphics go
weird and I can't get anywhere else. Now all his skills have gone. Icons
are there but no descriptions and they don't do anything. Similar
problems with blood dragon plate. Disappears off char I put it on and
reappears in my inventory. Helm, gloves etc go back to vendor. Was working OK until I went down into Deep Roads. Shale hasn't worked properly since and although I could give the Blood Dragon Armor chest piece to Ogren, and it stayed on him for a few days, it has now gone back to the inventory and disappeared off him again. Loading old save game files don't help. It means that I now can't use Shale as his skills don't work. Losing the use of the armour (and the money I paid to buy it) is irritating but I can live with that, but I couldn't do the 2nd part of the golem quest (the bit in the Deep Roads) as I can't talk to Shale without the game crashing, and as his skills don't work any more he isn't any use as a companion. I haven't modified the game in any way since I bought the disk.

Thanks for posting complete information. A few thoughts (I'd try these in order):
-- Try patching the game. The current patch is 1.05. There's a link in the patch announcement post pinned towards the top of this forum.
-- It may be that the Stone Prisoner DLC was corrupted somehow. Try manually reinstalling it. There are links to the files (you'll need to get two files, the DLC itself and its associated "offer" file) on the Dragon Age Wiki... http://dragonage.wik...ntent_(Origins) ... which also includes instructions on how to install them. Note: if you try this, best to apply the 1.05 patch *again* once it's installed.
-- If those two things fail, you might consider uninstalling/reinstalling the game. You can back up your current saved games by copying the folder My Documents>Bioware>Dragon Age>Characters to a safe location, then copy them back once you're done. If you uninstall the game, reboot your machine before reinstalling... this makes sure the registry keys are cleared out.
-- I suppose some of what you describe could be a corrupted video driver... especially if you have occasional issues with other programs. Uninstalling and reinstalling your driver in safe mode could help... see the link in my sig, below.
Let us know if any of that helps!

Thanks. Patch seems to have got Shale's skills working again. I'll try taking him back to Orzammar when I get to a convenient place to map travel and see if it lets me do the 2nd part of his quest.

Still can't talk to Shale without screen going weird and only having the 2 options of "leave the golem alone" or trying to activate the control rod. I'll try reinstalling the Stone Prisoner DLC and reapply the patch, and see if that sorts it.

Couldn't find the link to the download files on the wiki, but I did spot the section marked "shale bug note" on the wiki talk page which was exactly the problem I was having. Following the link to another page on this forum:
http://social.biowar...331250/1#578343
gave instructions as to how to fix it, which seems to have worked perfectly. I was able to complete the 2nd part of Shale's quest, and he/she seems to be working fine now.
