I never played Wasteland and I'm usually two rungs above bankruptcy. There are so many other places I'd donate to before a game developer. The only reason I'd do it now is because it's Obsidian.
Yeah, same reason I hadn't donated until now. Never played the original and as a full-time college student, I'm kinda broke.

Sorry if the whole donation thing rubs me the wrong way, but as an artist I never get a client's money up front, nor would I ask for it.

What would you have them do then? Haven't you seen the video they put up at their Kickstarter page? They'd pretty much given up on the project and they're reaching out to the fans as a last resort due to being shot down by every publisher out there.
I'm sorry but this is the only way forward if they want to beat out the current dev/publisher model in the industry. Also, it's only working because Brian Fargo is a trusted and respected name in the industry; not everyone can reach out and ask for $$$, and expect people to follow through.

So do fans have to donate, and pay for the game as well?

No, you get the game free if you donate a certain amount.
In the case of Wasteland 2, you get a digital copy once it's released if you donate $15. And a boxed copy with a bunch of other cool stuff if you donate $50.
You're essentially placing a pre-order except the game isn't in development yet.

No, you have the different tiers which get you different things. So if you pledge at least $15 that gets you a digital copy of the game. Then at different levels you get extra stuff.
Just read up on it here: http://www.kickstart...ile/wasteland-2

I was just kdding. As a college student who only works part time I donated because I remember playing Wasteland 1 when I was a kid with my dad. Wasteland and Fallout are two franchises that are dear to me.

Like someone said Brian Fargo said he went to all "the big publishers" and he said everything in the pitch video actually happened with publishers were dodging him and actually sending him invites through facebook instead of giving him a straight up answer.
Unfortunately this kind of game is dying and Brian Fargo and hopefully Obsidian together can bring back this much much loved franchise back to it's full potential. I gladly donated because he is a respected developer and he did say if this kickstarter doesn't work then he would have to let the series die.
And on the kickstarter page you can see what your donations get. At the lowest donation you get a digital copy, at $50 you get a physical copy and the rewards get better and better there is even a steam beta if you donate high enough. Looks like the game will be redeemable on Steam even.

There is not enough rpgs on the market nowadays, the chance to support an old-school one by the veterans? I'm not missing this.

1.) Will it likely be a deep RPG on-par with New Vegas?
2.) Would my 2009 Mac laptop be capable of running it?
