Now things are getting interesting. You can never have enough post-apocalyptic wastelands.

Yes you can, we've reached my limit, I'd far prefer something cyberpunk or steampunkish.

I actually agree. Only that cyberpunk has been done to death as well. And there's a bit too much steampunk, period. So I'd rather some unique (half-)fantasy setting... ^_^

There is way more fantasy than cyber/steampunk though.

So, what platforms?

Windows, Mac and Linux I believe.

No consoles then?

Fargo has stated no plans for console ports.

Latest interview from Rock, Paper Shotgun with Brian Fargo. Fargo discusses the potential partnership with Obsidian and what they can really bring to the table.

Here it is.

"RPS: Who’s going to handle the story element? Are you going to do that in-house or are you going to pool it like those science fiction authors where it’s a completely collaborative thing?

Fargo: It’s going to be a little bit myself and Mike Stackpole making the world sense come together. So we’l be helping to coordinate the overarching story of it all, but the individual parts, that’s where we have different people, whether it’s Chris Avellone, or Liz Danforth, who are working on their areas.

Creatively, when you work on a product like this, you say “listen, we need this prison yard and just make sure at the end they walk out with an Uzi, OK, I don’t care what happens in there but just make sure they get an uzi at the end for the next part.” They say “great” and we turn them loose.

The most important that this adds, and what our players continue to want and ask for from us, is scope and scale. That’s what this is about. Every time the numbers go up, the game just gets a little bit bigger and a little more dense, and this helps ensure that."

The uderline part has me excited for the writing team. Freedom to do almost anything they want.

Who doesn't want some great humor that pokes fun at us?

'bout time the developers started going straight to the customers to fund the games that the publishers say the customers don't want.

Pretty much this. I'm hardly the biggest RPG geek in the world, but even I can see that this is the meeting of some very remarkable minds. Here's to a bright new future.

Black Isle riseth from the ashes!

Seriously, hardcore, oldschool RPG fans have someone to get behind. My only small suggestion is custom character portraits or a character creator. Other than that, even if my input doesn't happen, I will leave everything to the geniuses at InXile and Obsidian. I am totally looking at donating 50 bucks before the end. I just wish I had $1,000 to donate!

Yup. Though I didn't mean medieval/cliche'd fantasy. I used the word in a broad sense.

I am a bit iffy on the modern stuff, so hence the fantasy/story-telling/poetic-make-belief wish. And steampunk is unappealing for other reasons than its (minimal) popularity (and it is certainly more appealing than most modern settings).

I don't exactly know what this perfect-for-me setting would be though. Probably some "mythical dream strikes into futuristic urban society", as was The Longest Journey.

Brian Fargo has a new blog entry up.

Since the Wasteland 2 forums have been asking about future goals Fargo decided to let people know what their plans are.

I chose a few snippets that stood out to me. I really doubt the kickstarter will raise another $1 million by the time the kickstarter is close but heres hoping it does.

"Things are sure looking good to hit our next milestone of $2.1 million dollars, which makes the game deeper of course, but it also brings the design talents of Chris Avellone of Obsidian. We look forward to having Chris bring his style and prose to the game."

"Scope and scale is the number one request, and it is what we are focusing our monies on primarily. So at 2.5 million dollars we would bring in another couple of designers help create more areas. This will not only increase the overall size and depth of the world, but it translates to more storylines and more player options as well. "

"The third most asked about feature is for us to provide a mod kit to allow players to create their own scenarios. I have always loved those kinds of tool-sets to set players loose to keep the world expanding. To create these kinds of tools is time consuming and requires a separate team of guys to do it. While we are not ready to commit to that feature yet, we can say that if we were to hit 3 million dollars, it would be possible to do a mod kit without cutting into the plan for the main game."

I like the new $55 reward tier. I don't care about physical goods, so getting everything digitally is nice. Unfortunately that means my pledge drops from $100 to $55. Got more money to put towards other KickStarters now though.

Well, you can STILL pledge $100 and get the $55 reward if that's what you want.

I know. But I'm greedy and the project is well funded now. Going to save money for Obsidian's RPG hopefully. Maybe Shadowrun(haven't looked at it much yet).

And Avellone is officially on board now that Wasteland 2's kickstarter is over 2.1 million!

Pretty good interview with Avellone on Wasteland 2, Kickstarter and more over at Rock, Paper Shotgun.

Lots of good quotes in there:

Chris Avellone: I’d argue Kickstarter isn’t what the industry needs,  it’s what players need. Who’s to say “dead genres” are dead? Are they?  Who made this decision? And worse, who decides that those games won’t be financed? Publishers have every right to watch their bottom line, but  for a long period of time, that was largely the only financial model  developers had – and the only way most players were going to see games  get produced.

Kickstarter changes that, and asks the players what they want. You’re not asking a publisher about an R.O.I. You’re asking players if they’d  pay to see a genre they love be produced. It’s voting, it’s targeted  people directly. It’s a fresh perspective, and I think it’s a great  agent for change for games that often wouldn’t make it past a publisher pitch stage – adventure games, for example. As such, assuming there’s a demand, and there is, then suddenly you’re able to meet that demand. Sounds like everyone wins. Publishers don’t have to worry about returns, and developers have an outlet for their games.

Chris Avellone: We already have to be aware and meet player expectations in the industry already – it’s our job and our responsibility. Having  fan input earlier on helps you do both, and makes it more relevant. I  think the fact developers are forced to distance aspects of their game  and its features from the public from the outset as part of the current  model is a strike against it. To use our example from FNV: Old World  Blues, a lot of the strength of that DLC came from fan feedback, ranging from inadvertent (hey, there sure are a lot of homebase mods on the Nexus) to purposeful (open world structure, humor).

I still consider a lot of innovations that occurred with Fallout 1 and  Wasteland to be unmatched in today’s RPGs. I feel true innovation often  gets lost beyond features that require new engine tech and the latest  video card when we can achieve more interesting game mechanics in  tighter constraints.

And Fargo posted the first official Wasteland 2 concept art on the Kickstarter page- the Desert Rangers:
