If your Shepard had been given free will at the end, what would he have done?

Genocide is going to happen either way. If shepard does not intervene, the reapers will once again succeed in harvesting the galaxy. Who is to know whether or not the next cycle will be able to stop the reapers? Or the one after that?

I'm surprised so many people would allow the cycle to continue just so that Shepard can die with his pride in tact.

I - being Shepard - would have refused to make any of this "choices" this Starchild gave me. I would have said that I have a whole armada out there willing to fight till the end. So ... Starchild gives me no chance to solve the problem in the way I want to do it ... Good. I turn around, leave the Citadel somehow and fight. With Ashley on my side, Garrus in my back and all the others around me, because I know they will understand that I cannot/ don't want to make this decision. Fight till we die or the Reapers fall. Starchild ... You give me no other options. Fine. Then I'll do it my way.

Read the rest of what I wrote on ME2, basically, you have to intentionally screw up on who you pick and what loyalty mission you didn't do to get a different ending

I lost 2 crew on my first run. Because I didn't rely on walkthroughs to finish it. Perhaps if others did too, they would see the different endings. Point remains, there are different endings for ME2.

On my first run I picked legion to infiltrate, samara to do the barrier, garrus to lead teams both times, mordin to take back the survivors, cause he wasn't really any use here, and I took tali and garrus to fight the main boss, and I didn't rely on any guide to tell me how to do that.

So who did you pick?

I did everything correct until the final battle, I took Garrus and Zaeed with me. Without these two, because I was down one "Defense" character, I lost a few in the rearguard.

Not Shepard's pride. The pride of every living thing in the galaxy.
The pride of every species that's come together to stop the Reapers. Either we stop them on our terms, or damage them as much as we can and hope the next cycle fares better.

Either way, they will have fought to the best of their ability, and not have been betrayed and murdered by a coward who thought compromise was better than extinction.

Let's imagine your Shepard was standing, facing 'Star Child', he'd been given those free nihilistic choices....

... Only this time, the boundaries and limitations of the game had been removed and you were free to act as you saw fit, according to his character.

In my own situation, Shepard would have basically told 'Star Child' to, "go to hell" in regard to destroying all Synthetics, and the Mass Relays, refusing to compromise until another way had been revealed.

He'd have interrogated Star Child, trying to find answers...and if Star KId refused to comply, he'd  probably have ignored the trap of the three choices, and just radioed the fleet with an order to push forward the attack and blow The Reapers to hell with everything they had!

Even if it resulted in utter defeat, it may at very least, have lessened the Reapers' numbers, and bought time for the rest of the galaxy.

Under no circumstances would he have accepted any scenario in which all Mass Effect relays were destroyed, nor would he have blindly taken 'Star Child's explanation on pure faith, and accepted the three solutions as the only solutions.

Agreed. I was pissed when they forced me to accept Starchild's options as the only ones.

"It's over because we've decided it's over, we don't need you to guide us anymore; Now get the hell out of our galaxy!"

(best imagined in shepard voice)

Slightly altered Babylon Five quote which would have been perfect. And just because its so good, heres another that really fits Mass Effect.

"The war we fight is not against powers and principalities – it is against chaos and despair. Greater than the death of flesh is the death of hope, the death of dreams. Against this peril we can never surrender."

She'd have told the ghostly little brat to get fcuked and proceeded the blow the little sh!t to whence it came (after locating the computer projecting it's likeness) then would've proceeded to find a way to detroy the reapers without the price being blowing the crap out of every star system with a Mass Relay.

So basically, everyone's choice is to say "screw you" to the star child and die from blood loss. Wow, great plan.

Awakening reveals that the destruction of even one Mass Relay can effectively destroy an entire system, potentially leading to the death of billions.

Ipso facto, destroying them all would lead to uncounted megatrillions of deaths... gigadeath crime (to coin a Frank Herbert phrase), as we have no reason to believe that the the scenario would be any different if the Relays were destroyed as a result of Shepard's choices.

If given a choice between galactic genocide, or his own death.. then yes, absolutely, my Shepard would choose to die from blood loss. But beyond that, surely refusing to submit to the enemy, and do their bidding is a far nobler, and braver course of action than submitting purely to save one's own skin?

There is an assumption here: that Reapers are actually unstoppable and that the Crucible is the ONLY way to stop them. The Crucible interacts with the Reaper's technology (The Citadel) which claims to be an AI that controls the Reapers (in other words, it sets the parameters for their behavior whether the Reapers are aware or not). This AI, the Catalyst, is, thus, the unconscious mind of the Reapers. So, in assuming the Catalyst is correct that this is the "only way" we are siding with the Reapers and believing what the enemy - who has resorted to deception before - tells us to be true. Why believe the Reapers? Why assume that this is the only way? The objection is that the ends does not justify the means - we choose to fight the battle on our own terms, not on the Reapers' terms. If we lose, we do it without losing our soul and we hope the next cycle finds a way.

If I recall correctly, in the leaks, one of the endings was basically Shepard collapsing and dying in front of the console.

Shepard: Hackett, Normandy, come in.

Joker: Shepard! You're alive!

Hackett: I thought we lost you. Are you still on the Citadel? Can you fire the Crucible?

Shepard: Admiral, the Crucible is a Reaper trap. We can't win using it.

The Catalyst child dissapears in a huff - it's on the Reaper's side, after all.

Hackett: We can't win fighting them head on, we have to retreat.

Shepard: No, I have an idea. The Crucible has an active AI that apparently can control the Reapers, if we can reprogram it we might have a shot.

Hackett: That sounds incredibly risky. How would you do that?

Shepard: EDI, we're going to need your help.

EDI: Shepard?

Joker: No. No way.

Shepard: Joker who do you have on board?

Joker: Not EDI, Shepard.

EDI: It's okay, Joker. No one else can do this.

Shepard: Joker, who do you have with you?

Joker: (reluctantly) Everyone except [insert squad members who made run at the beam with Shepard here].

[Shepard Chooses his squad - EDI is not a choice (she runs a parallel mission) - and, honestly, the ME2 members who are still alive should be available squad choices here BECAUSE I SAY SO ;) - the other members will be involved too and (if they survived on Earth) the other two squadies show up later in the mission ]

The Normandy swoops around to drop the squad off and EDI. As EDI leaves the Normandy, Joker stands in the doorway.

EDI: (turning to Joker) Jeffery.

Joker: Yeah?

EDI: I love you.

Joker: Just come back.

[mission start: Fight through Reapers to find a console where EDI can upload a virus based on the fragments of Reaper code - she eventually has to upload herself into the computer to fight the AI. She "dies" - but, happy ending, turns out her consciousness survives on the Normandy. She'll need a new body though - but I'm sure Joker will be more than happy to work with her about that. The fight through the Citadel should resemble something of a cross between LotSB and the Suicide Mission involving all squad mates who are alive from ME1 and 2.]

The end.

The part with EDI could be true. Some people figured out that there is cut audio content during the run to the beam whch suggests that Joker rescues the hammer team with the destruction of Harbinger.  During one of the lines Joker says that they should bring back EDI in one piece.

Y'all realize that Casper isn't a real, physical being in any interpretation, right?

(Also slight LOL at “uploading viruses” in a topic about the lack of realism in the original version. Though I think the EDI angle does have some interesting potential.)

I would rather the Reapers win a costly victory than the galaxy be thrown into a long term dark age.
You do realise that the Reapers win in all of the endings. All of the choices are provided by the Reaper commander, who has determined these outcomes to be acceptable.

Assuming it isn't a dream thing like some want it to be.

Hack-it: "Shepard we have to fire the Crucible, but the Citadel is still full of civilians"
*Paragon choice*
Shepard: "Evacuate the civilians still on the Citadel"
Hack-it: "Understood, the fleets will hold off the Reapers while Quarians evacuate"
EMS Maximum, Reapers held back, minimal loses of civilians
Star Child: "What are you doing?"
Shepard: "You said you're controlling all the Reapers, well time for you to give it up"
*Star Child turns into holo-Harbinger*
Harbinger: "Sheepaard! You could be one of us, you'd be useful"
Shepard: "Lol, I knew it was you all along, time to end this"
Harbinger: "Nooooooo"
*Harbinger lands outside the Crucible and Citadel and can't get at Shepard, but fires lasers that Shepards avoids*
Harbinger: "ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL"
*TIM burns up and becomes a leaping Saren 2 wannable, only with rockets because that's awesome*
*Shepard fights TIM who uses Rockets, mind control dream scenes and leaping around -also Harbinger shoots his laser at Shepard- after hour long pain-in-the-ass boss fight, TIM does down, causing the backlash to hit Harbinger*
Harbinger: "Curses foiled again!"
Joker: "Yeee-haaar" then gives Harbinger a wounding blow with Normandy guns.
Shepard: "Joker, stop stealing my kills!"
Harbinger still alive but not controling everything, the Crucible fires. Causing the Dark energy that controls the Reapers to implode, dragging Shepard, Harbinger and Citadel into a semi-black hole.

Weird inter-turmoil stuff happens, like in the dreams, only now things can hurt Shepard and he has to fight. Ends with another, dialogue battle against Harbingers logic where he explains the Reapers, Dark Energy and the resulting Mass Effect and why the Relays were made to trap organics and the harvest cycle. If you succeed, you pop out the black hole as it colapses, if your EMS is the absolute highest a ship sees you and Joker flys in and picks you up. Party time with recap of all you lost, all you have and credits roll with a running home-movie type of deal showing the results, good or bad of what you're achieved.

BEST ENDING EVER TO BEST GAME THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN *CRIES*
