I just recently purchased this game through gamestop which included nwn1 and 2 and all the expansions. I dont know anything about these games and want to ask the question of is it a true sequel. As in will I get more out of the second by playing the first or are they totally different stories, lands, people, etc? Also if anyone has a great link for a brand new player who will more than likely have tons of how to questions it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

NWN2 is pretty much based on NWN but no it is not a sequel, which means the locations have the same names but the layouts are totally different - along with the entire structure of the game engine - the only similarities are that both NWN & NWN2 are based on D&D3.5

Like Morbane says, there's a very slight carry over re. historicity (placenames, mainly in OC & SoZ) but anything further is just an allusion or two, and any sense of nostalgia from one game to the other is 'player created',

The greatness of the NWN series isn't on their campaigns anyway, but on the tons of community made modules and PWs, often better than the official content.

NWN is based on 3.0
NWN2 is based on 3.5

It's more separate stories, really it's more of a setting which a lot of people use to tell stories. The first two are loosely connected. The real power is that it's easy for end users to create modules with new stories with quality level equal ( often better than ) the official stuff.

Some of the community members even worked on or contributed features which you end up using in the actual game.

( and all of what i described is true for both NWN1 and NWN2 )

The campaigns that come with NWN and NWN2 take place in the same world and the events your group will deal with in NWN2 do follow the events that occurred in NWN. So in that sense it is a sequel. Some of the things you learn in NWN, like how to cast spells, use weapons, etc. are not that different in NWN2. Other things, like crafting and controlling companions/henchmen, vary greatly from game to game. You cannot carry over characters from NWN to NWN2 though. NWN2 is not a continuation of the life of your NWN character. So if that is what you mean by sequel, then it is definitely not.

Personally I think it makes sense to play them in order, but if you find the graphics or interface of NWN to be unacceptable, then switch to NWN2.

Just to elaborate and highlight what some others have said, there are over 500 community created modules (individual games) for NWN2 and IIRC over a thousand for NWN1 (its been around longer). You essentially just bought a couple thousands games.

I think it was Retta Starling in West Harbour who tells the player that the city of Neverwinter was so badly damaged during the plague that it had to be completely rebuilt, thus explaining why the layout of the city looks nothing like it did in NWN1. Image IPB

You would have thought they could have found some donors willing to chip in a few GPs to re-erect the statues of The Hero Of Neverwinter and his crew...

Alas, what a fickle mistress is fame.  Image IPB
