I have no issues with elaboration ... in fact, I'll say it: "ELABORATIONS FOR EVERYONE!!!!!!!!'

There.

What I would have a problem with is Bioware changing what I've already played and enjoyed. I know not all Retakers are asking for the same things so it does get confusing. I'm addressing those that have stated they want the last 10 minutes completely rewritten (removing "star child", etc.) I wouldn't be happy about that.

I probably wouldn't bake cupcakes over it though.

Question:

If BioWare adds more to the ending via DLC, why do those that love the ending in its current state care? They can just keep the ending as is, and not download the DLC.

That's what I don't get.

If the DLC changes the entire meaning that I got out of my ending, then that is shaky ground.
Yes I can ignore the DLC, but I generally like to play that extra content since I'm a fan. If I play through it and it gives me a little more meaning without totally ruining my ending great, but if it completely changes the meaning entirely and makes my choice completely irrelevant in the process. Well that would be bad on so many levels.

Plus what if it is not DLC per se, but a patch to the game? Then those of us playing through it again, get to the ending and the meaning we got out of it the first time is completely undone by the new content in the ending now?

It is very dangerous, which is why Bioware is treading lightly on what they are going to do. I do not envy them the decisions they will have to make so it works out well for all parties involved.

"The entire meaning"...

But what if "meaning" you got from it, is your own interpretation? What if it's not even correct as to what the writers intended?

My point is, you took away whatever you wanted with the ending, and that's fine. But I would also say, just don't download the DLC.

I would be shocked if BioWare patched the game. There is just no way. It would definitely be a DLC dl. They would not force an extended ending or altered ending on fans that already beat the game. Would be such a disaster.

That's what I've been trying to vouch for this entire time. I have never expected them to erase anything they created. "Artistic integrity" actually stands in this case. They shouldn't have to erase their original ending forever. Adding more appeases both parties, apart from the ones who think BioWare 'caved'. Customer satisfaction does not equal caving.

I read game informer because I get it and because it has information on video games. If you're reading game informer for their actual opinions...hell if you listen to ANY gamer for their actual opinions, I question you.

Oh hello there.

I am a longtime fan of Bioware. My plans quite likely could have included future Bioware products.

But the ending to Mass Effect 3 makes very little sense in a storytelling capacity, and, MORE IMPORTANTLY managed to be the exact opposite of what the developers said it was going to be, in many cases.

If they cannot or will not change the ending, I suppose I can find that to be a reasonable course of action, however, refusing to acknowledge that statements made before the release were misleading, intentionally or not, is a poor business practice.

You can go right on "respecting their narratives and endings", but I'd call you a sucker, especially when you feel that somehow elevates you over other fans.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it before rolling out labels like "Ignorant" for the people who put Bioware on the map, with their money and their enthusiasm.

How is it wrong to ask for what we paid for in the first place? Maybe GI should read some of the interviews they published. If the ending is so great and so many people love it why did Bioware lie. Also if porenders want to stop hearing from me all they have to do is send me $80 and I will not be ripped off any more. Heck Bioware is still lying to us on this site saying we don't need MP to get SP endings.

We are only asking for what we were told would be in the game, what we paid for. There is no law that says we have to spend every cent of our money on Bioware games, maybe some day that will happen but it has not happened yet.

Remember this is why we are holding the line.

one of the things we do try to do is make different endings that are
optimal for different people “

“And, to be honest, you [the fans] are crafting your Mass Effect story as
much as we are anyway.”

Interview with Mike Gamble (Associate Producer)

“There are many different endings. We wouldn’t do it any other way. How
could you go through all three campaigns playing as your Shepard and
then be forced into a bespoke ending that everyone gets? But I can’t

“Every decision you've made will impact how things go. The player's also the

“You'll get answers to everything. That was one of the key things. Regardless
of how we did everything, we had to say, yes, we're going to provide
some answers to these people.”

“Because a lot of these plot threads are concluding and because it's being

“For people who are invested in these characters and the back-story of the
universe and everything, all of these things come to a resolution in
Mass Effect 3. And they are resolved in a way that's very different
based on what you would do in those situations.”

Interview with Casey Hudson (Director)
http://venturebeat.c...fans-interview/

“Fans want to make sure that they see things resolved, they want to get
some closure, a great ending. I think they’re going to get that.”

“Mass Effect 3 is all about answering all the biggest questions in the
lore, learning about the mysteries and the Protheans and the Reapers,
being able to decide for yourself how all of these things come to an
end.”

Interviewer: “So are you guys the creators or the stewards of the franchise?”
Hudson: “Um… You know, at this point, I think we’re co-creators with
the fans. We use a lot of feedback.”

Interview with Casey Hudson (Director)
http://www.gameinfor...PostPageIndex=2

Interviewer: [Regarding the numerous possible endings of Mass Effect 2] “Is that
same type of complexity built into the ending of Mass Effect 3?”
Hudson: “Yeah, and I’d say much more so, because we have the ability to
build the endings out in a way that we don’t have to worry about
eventually tying them back together somewhere. This story arc is
coming to an end with this game. That means the endings can be a lot
more different. At this point we’re taking into account so many
decisions that you’ve made as a player and reflecting a lot of that
stuff. It’s not even in any way like the traditional game endings,
where you can say how many endings there are or whether you got
ending A, B, or C.....The endings have a lot more sophistication and
variety in them.”

“We have a rule in our franchise that there is no canon. You as a player
decide what your story is.”

EDIT: Couple more interesting quotes I found, enjoy......or not.

Mike Gamble (Associate Producer)
http://www.nowgamer....in_bioware.html

Mass Effect 3 will shake up the player's moral choices more than ever
before, even going so far as allowing the Reapers to win the battle
for Earth, according to BioWare's community representative Mike
Gamble.

In an inteview with NowGamer at Gamescom, we asked if BioWare was taking risks with Mass Effect 3's
plot, including a negative ending in which the Reapers win. Gamble simply said, "Yes". We asked him again to confirm what he had just said and he said, "Yes".

Mike Gamble (Associate Producer)
http://www.nowgamer....ry_details.html

"Of course you don’t have to play multiplayer, you can choose to play
all the side-quests in single-player and do all that stuff you’ll
still get all the same endings and same information, it’s just a
totally different way of playing"

Casey Hudson (Director)
http://gamescatalyst...active-stories/

“The whole idea of Mass Effect3 is resolving all of the biggest questions, about the Protheons and
the Reapers, and being in the driver's seat to end the galaxy and all
of these big plot lines, to decide what civilizations are going to
live or die: All of these things are answered in Mass Effect 3.”

Casey Hudson (Director)
http://www.computera...ly-good/?page=2

“There is a huge set of consequences that start stacking up as you approach the end-game. And
even in terms of the ending itself, it continues to break down to
some very large decisions. So it's not like a classic game ending
where everything is linear and you make a choice between a few things
- it really does layer in many, many different choices, up to the
final moments, where it's going to be different for everyone who
plays it.”

Ya this is what i hear from most everybody and i generally agree with it. Like i was talkin about to the other guy they could redo it and kepp the same 3 original choices in the game but expand upon those with more interaction and other choices thus pleasing both parties to the realistic best of their ability.

Yeah why should anyone think that a magazine made by a store that sells video games will ever say anything negative about any video game maker?  There is a reason GI never seems to give any game a bad rating, they exist to sell games for Gamestop.

Oh. If that is true then I apologise because the internet causes intent to be sometimes difficult to read.

Right, it won't bother me.

I was referring to the article making the point about if it changes the meaning through elaboration, anyone who was a strong believer in indoctrination theory or some other theory that made sense to them would then feel betrayed or find that they hate that what they got out of the ending is no longer valid.

It's a delicate thing Bioware has to do to make sure that they don't end up alienating more people in the process of trying to answer questions.

I guess what I'm trying to say is...

Fans not buying another product from BioWare is something that happens all the time in the market place. I know people that will no longer watch JJ Abrams produced stuff after LOST. I know people that won't watch M Night Shamylan films after Lady In The Water.

It's apart of the cycle. I do not think people are demanding or holding someone hostage by refusing to buy another product from an artist, when they feel the artist wasn't able to deliver on a product/ story that asked the audience to invest so much time into it.

The difference here though is (and this is very important), is that BioWare had promised the ending would be shaped by the choices we made in the game. But that's not true. The ending itself is a completely separate entity from the rest of the plot. The choices that are presented to you, do not reflect past choices. And this is a pretty big deal. Because if they told people that the Mass Effect trilogy would be a story where you had a say from beginning middle to end (this is how they marketed the gaming experience), then they failed on the end part.

I also think it's a bit of a myth that other mediums haven't had fans ask for a new ending. Evangelion (Anime) had its ending changed after fans were upset with the confusing ending. Sherlock Holmes had its ending changed, after fans didn't like the death of the protagonist. I could go on and on. So it's a bit of a lie to say this is unprecedented.

And IMO Mass Effect fans actually have more of a right to want a new ending (compared to the above example), just for the fact that they were promised something when buying a product and BioWare didn't deliver.

All I'll say is: any artist worth their own salt, doesn't make art just for themselves (this is especially true for story tellers). They make something for others to experience as well. And if this many fans feel cheated by the ending, I think it would show great integrity of the artist to listen, and to re-consider the choices they made.

Some of you say this is "caving in". That they would be compromising their own integrity by doing so. That's non-sense. Complete and utter non-sense. If they choose to do this, that's their choice. And they did so, because they understand the importance of their audience. Not just from a consumer (money) point of view. But from a storytelling point of view.

It seems to me that:

Some gaming publications/sites focus primarily on their own style and their own viewpoints in reporting and communicating to their readers. Examples would be Kotaku, Destructoid, and recently Forbes (whether you enjoy these sites, or don't).

Other gaming publications/sites focus primarily on their access to industry information, industry leaders, and their pride in publishing exclusives and having first-access to information. These are your IGN, your GameInformer, and individuals like Geoff Keighley.

And to their credit, they have established the relationships and continue to reach and stretch to publish exclusives and be the first to have access to some industry information. Many other publications are content to attend conventions and public events in an attempt to scrub information, perhaps obtain access to a short interview, and deep-link the rest later. These publications are not so content.

So for IGN and GameInformer, the tone their viewpoints have taken have been partly a matter of defending their publications' focus and their own pride and position having established these high-profile and first-access relationships. They've met and spent time with the industry professionals, and naturally would related more to these "real people" than the forum posts of people who don't quite seem as "real". And if for some reason they lost their high-profile and first-access relationships, they don't have quite the stylistic or dynamic viewpoints to fall back on. I personally think this controversy is making them nervous.

One more bit - Geoff Keighley came on BSN to answer questions about his Final Hours ME3 app, an app he personally funded at tremendous risk to his reputation in the industry. And during the chat he had no choice but to receive and digest where the ME3 fans stood regarding the controversy, and did so without dismissing either side's viewpoints. Did IGN? Did GameInformer?

Maybe you guys should read the articles and opinions that oppose your viewpoint.

There are people out there who are satisfied with the ending and who are opposed to it being altered. And there are the people who want it changed due to their opinion that not everything was answered, that it wasn't the collective ending they wanted it to be.

However, shows the maturity level of you guys by blindly hating and not even bothering to read articles such as this. This movement is a ****ing joke.

EDIT:

Gameinformer is a pretty respectable sight. Saying that their morons, bought out, and just completely oblivious to the opinion of gamers and the industry that they support just shows how narrow minded you all are.
