In the absence of moral choices, you go with the guy who gets things done - because you are a Grey Warden and that's what you care about.

Not all Grey Wardens are the same or Duncan :P

First playthrough I chose Harrowmont and was extremely disappointed in how that turned out. Later games reading the codex on the burden dwarves carry in their never ending battle with the darkspawn changed my mind about the entire situation.

The dwarven empire is one in decline as you can see the darkspawn have them backed up to two thaigs. And knowing their resolve in fighting the darkspawn via codex I can't help but admire these people and wish for them success.

They are an empire in decline and crisis and need strength on the throne more than anything or they face annihilation. They also need some new direction regarding the caste system. Their politics is dirty and there is no way to change that and get a happy ending without you yourself feeling dirty. The Anvil of the Void choice for strength makes me feel dirty. The Bhelen choice makes me feel dirty. The Harrowmont choice makes me feel regret. Epilogue regarding Harrowmont falling to poison that he himself used before pissed me off when I backed him.

Wait, the Epilogue text does explicitly confirm that Harrowmont was the poisoner?

I don't recall it verbatim but to paraphrase it was ironic that he himself fell to poison.
