In my current playthrough (adept), Vega's becoming something of a squad staple for the fact he's a meat wall and does a fantastic job soaking fire. His mission dialog is actually quite good, and generally humorous. His unique way of disabling the geth anti-air when rescuing Koris is hysterical.

On my adept, Miranda was my staple squadmate in ME2 (biotic detonations, natch) and in ME1 Ashley got the honor.

I like to mix it up, but after I had played through the game a few times, I started using these combos quite a bit:

ME1: Liara and Garrus

Liara is a boss in ME 1 with how powerful biotics are, and Garrus is the most powerful tech offensively (when it was absolutely necessary to have one tech in the group to hack).

ME2: Miranda and Legion

Miranda has warp, overload, and slam, so she has an ability to hit each of armor, health, barriers, and shields. She also has the squad buff ability, which is nice. Legion has awesome stuff: the widow rifle, making him one of the most destructive characters, combat drone to keep them at a distance, and geth shield to buff himself up.

ME3: Not sure yet. I've only played through once and I used a variety of characters to hear their dialogue.

I usually always picked a squad mate depending on the mission on the chance that more revealing dialogue would occur, or if that particularly character has some kind of connection to the mission. So, it was more story-driven than actual strategy.

For example, on the Edin Prime mission where you pick up Javik, I took Ashley along because that is where I first met her. I took Liara with me on the Ardat-Yakshi mission. I took Tali with me on every secondary mission on Rannoch before the primary one. I also took Javik with me to Thessia because I was going to deal with some Prothean artifact.

I guess it helped make for a richer ME experience.

In ME1 I found I normally went with a party of Ash and Tali because I was an Adept and that made my party balanced.

In ME2 I tried to use more characters more often.

In ME3 I was pretty random with squad mixes, wanting to see what they said, etc.

 EDI took her on every single mission no exceptions. Having to do another playthrough to get some variety yeet in tht one I keep picking Garrus ergh what is wrong with me lol

Trying not to, I'll let the mission decide who fits best. Otherwise I guess I choose Tali pretty often, and Garrus.

Tali, whenever I pick her up, she's a permanent member of the squad. Usually it's her and Garrus or Liara.

I don't use one character exclusively in any of the games, but I do have go-to teams that I usually use:

ME1: Liara and Tali.
ME2: Kasumi.  Second member varies a lot.
ME3: Liara and Javik.

I usually bring Garrus along, with Tali if we're facing Geth/Cerberus, and Liara if it's Reapers/Cerberus. Also, if I'm interacting with a specific race or a character from an earlier game, I'll bring along characters that have known each other.
