I try to bring characters associated with the group/race involved in the mission, but almost always alongside Liara, who knows secrets about everyone and everything.

ME2: Tali and Garrus (except for the Collector Ship and base where I bring Samara or Thane, But Garrus is always there for the Reaper baby abortion)
ME3: Tali and Garrus/EDI

I play an Infiltrator. Biotic Squatmates without Throw are just a waste of time.

In ME1 her shields made her a tank and she could hack anything
In ME2 her Combat Drone made enemies pop out of cover and the enemy AI always attacked the nearest enemy. It was like shooting fish in a barrel.
In ME3 while her Drone was little less useful due to improved enemy AI, it still ties up enemies and does damage. Also ME3 squadmate AI needs to go to the shooting range since their accuracy is sooo bad. Luckily Geth Plasma Shotgun has a wide burst and long range making her the most accurate squadie.

I try and pick squadmates that might have an attachment to the mission to hear any input..Like waiting on Eden Prime so I could include Ashley on it etc.

On everything other than my ME2 insanity run, yes, I have two actually: Garrus + Tali every time.

So yeah, I pretty much bring my bro/LI Garrus everywhere. That's not counting missions with set characters of course, where I have to balance the stats of the squad member who I am forced to use.

Kaidan in 1 and 3 no matter how useless he is. Except for the Thessia mission....and Miranda in 2.

in other words...Garrus and Tali. XD

90% Liara. I just don't pick her if I can't or I want to give other squadmates some attention. In ME2 mostly Jack and Garrus.

In Mass Effect 3 I didn't really care who my second squadmate was. I had assumed there would be a lot more temporary squadmates, instead it was just Anderson for 10 minutes at the beginning of the game which was pretty lame.

To be honest I hate their combat abilities but Tali is my #1 LI and Garrus jsut feels like your best friend in the Universe. So I just gotta ha.

ME1: Tali, Garrus
ME2: Tali, Garrus
ME3: Tali, Garrus

As far as combat ability, Liara in ME1 and 3 is friggin OP in my opinion.

i was the heavy weapons guy so i liked to keep a tech expert and a biotic with me to balance things out. plus tali is just freaking awesome.

I would always have a Krogan on my squad but I can't do that anymore

I almost always bring Garrus. I love his various lines, and he's useful in just about every situation with his sniper rifle, and the proximity mine and overload abilities. If I ever import my infiltrator character I might not take him as often, since my infiltrator has most of the same abilities.

Next to Garrus would probably be Liara, since I love setting up devastating biotic combo attacks, and her Stasis ability is always useful. (Did you know stasis even works on people whose shields are still up?)

And even if my Shep wouldn't have biotics, I'd still be inclined to bring Liara if for no other reason than for her singularity crowd control.

In theory I ought to bring EDI along more, since overload and incinerate are both really useful abilities, but I just would rather bring other characters...*shrug*

I always picked Garrus in ME1, ME2 I didnt really have people I always picked because there were so many to choose from. Tali mostly.

I guess I picked Garrus in ME3 more than other squad mates. I'd say my three most used are Javik, Garrus, and Tali.

Overall I'd say Garrus.
