Kaidan's my shep's LI, but he's too boring so I always take Garrus.
The only exception was on Thessia. Mid way through I reloaded to bring Javik instead. Worth it.

Garrus. He is Shepard's right hand, period. He's in my squad every time. (Though he did take the first two legs of the suicide mission to lead B Squad, because who's going to trust Miranda to lead the team to victory?). Liara is in whenever I'm not required to send someone else.

I don't really care about the Squadmates powers i can manage even if they have total crap and i gets hard as well. I just take people with me i actually like.

Garrus. The only mission I didn't bring him along in ME3 was in Thessia (I brought Liara and Javik).

It's Garrus for me, but really, why did he become so popular? I mean he's my boy, but honestly he wasn't all that great in ME1. Still ended up as my fave in that game, but Wrex probably had the better lines. I assumed his badassery was upped in ME2 as a reaction to fans, so what's the original appeal?

I really try to mix it up, especially in ME2 where there feels like there are tons of missions where characters can have unique dialogue. But I still have characters I pick more above the rest:

ME1: Ashley just because I love her or Liara for much needed biotics
ME2: Mordin just because or Miranda because of warp and her great squad support power
ME3: James because of his frag grenades

When the mission is against Geth, I'd take Tali in place of Mordin/Liara.
