Basically, see the title of the post.  In my current game, Sten, Alistair, and Oghren all ended up using massive.  I'm aware of the tradeoffs (more damage reduction in exchange for costlier talents).  But given activated talents soak up your stamina so quickly, even if you're playing a rogue in light armor, I ultimately felt like giving Sten and Oghren one to three more activated talents per combat wasn't worth it.  In addition, apparently the threat rating for medium and heavy is equal to massive, meaning it won't take any heat off them.

Now, if I ever roll an PC CIty Elf or Dwarf Commoner warrior, I'll DW and probably just stay at Medium Armor, going for a dex-heavy build.  But, besides that...

heavy and massive armor impose a large penalty to rate of fire with ranged weapons. archer type characters, even archer warriors, need to stay in medium or light armor or else suffer very heavy damage penalties.

realistically though you're right, nobody uses medium armor. and the developers knew this as well. there arent any high level suits of medium worth wearing. light is great for rogues and archers of any kind. heavy/massive is for warriors. in the current state of the game medium is just used by low level characters as a stopgap before they have enough strength for heavy.

I had one of my rogue characters in the Wade's Superior Drakeskin (Medium) armor because I liked how it looked and it offered good protection without killing my stamina for combat.

Other than that, I usually opt for whatever fits the type of character I want. For a berserker, you want tons of stamina to keep using abilities, so the massive armor isn't very practical in my mind. On a tank however, you want massive, always, unless you're using Shale who tanks better than anyone else I've tried really. ;)

If I were a Warrior archer or melee DPS, I'd wear heavy armor, and as a melee rogue, I wear medium.

Basically, unless it has ludicrously good enhancements, no.

Melee warrior = massive armor.

Anything else = light (and if it wasn't for the enhancement bonus, they could as well be naked, it wouldn't make a difference).

I stuck my DW warrior in Ancient Elven armor, though I could get away with that because Alistair was tanking for me. Decent bonuses and I like the way it looks (though sometimes I think I'm the only person who likes the way it looks =P ).

Wade's Superior Dragonskin suit would like to have a word with you.

Ditto here. Though I use non set gloves, helm and boots. 2 mages with heals/rejuvees while Alister tanks. Mages also bring CC's.
Not flashy but fundamentally sound. Use the Juggernaut plate on Al most of time. Dragon plate is kinda fugly although fatigue reduction on BP is nice. I prefer to get 7 gold out of the gate for it on most play throughs(best to sell to dwarf at camp a couple hours into game if you wish to ever buy it back).

I used Wade's Superior Dragonskin Armor (medium) on my rogue because it allowed him to have Dueling and Momentum sustained and still have 0% fatigue. :)
