LI Tension: A Missed Opportunity

So I romanced Ashley in ME1 and Miranda in ME2. Yes I know the choice I made and I was fully willing to accept the consequences of having two potential LI. Actually I was looking forward to having to deal with those outcomes. I was excited for this!?! Really? Why?
The answer I came to is that it made me feel human and thats a good feeling. I got myself into a tough emotional situation where no matter who I chose I would end up hurting someone I cared about. Thats a tough spot and I love that a video game made me feel that.
I was hoping, really hoping, for consequences for having two LI. Instead we get "Pick her or her, ok move on." Thats it! Super dissapointment. Here's what I think could've been done:
- First I want to say that anyone who wishes to skip all the drama and just pick one that option is available as it already is.
- Now, Shepard gets to have both LI in the Normandy. This will allow for Shepard to have to face the fact that he/she has two LI and he/she loves them both (If you choose to continue the romance with both of them like the previous ME games). So allow players to have at least 1 ME2 character in the squad with them.
- There should be a growing tension that developes throughout the game between Shepard his two LI as they continue to fight for Shepard's love and pressuring him into picking one. Think about all the great dialogue that could be created for these moments. And not just from the LI and Shepard but from Joker and Garrus(if not LI) as they observe this fiasco Shepard has put himself in.
- As tension grows and Shepard is pressured to choose the emotional stress is something that Bioware could really build onto. And as Shepard feels it I know I would feel it as well considering I built a relationship with my two LI in the first two games.
- For once it would be nice if Shepard didnt have to work to get the lovin but rather others worked for his/hers. Let the LI's try to win Shepard over.
- That Epic moment when I have to pick one. All the heartfelt dialouge and romantic tension finally builds up to the EPIC moment where you have to pick one or the other. Possibility: make it during a scene where one of them might live or die to really build up the pressure. (As an added bonus if your Paragon/Renegade is high enough you could still save both). I would deffinitely feel like crying man tears at this point but would be more satisfied with my choice.
So thats how I would have liked to see it anyway. More drama because thats just what my Shepard likes to create, and therefore a more epic and fulfilling romantic storyline. Making Shepard more human makes it easier to connect with him/her as well. Also its a nice bonus for those who played the previous Mass Effects. A gift if you will. Its too bad we got what we got.

I support this^^
I was hoping for a little drama between Kaidan and Thane. Instead Thane tells me he'll watch over him and then they kill of Thane and we never hear or think about him again. Thanks Bioware!

One of the writers talked about this. I think it came down to them wanting to focus on other things so they decided to minimize the drama overall. Though Ash and Shep get into it to some degree at one point based on what happened in ME2.
They also lacked to write most romances in a proper way. ME2!romances are obiously shafted except Garrus and Tali (although the later one suffers from lack of Tali's presence while the first one shares 80% bro-moments everyone sees as long as Garrus is alive).
The only really well developed and well balanced romance is the one for Liara.
The rest got far less development than deserved. And the "drama part" is just one of many, many points.
Somehow BW never realized a lot of ppl play the series not for the story but for the characters and the romances. The story is just the background and the reason why all those characters came together. But it's not the focus. It's not MY focus.
My focus is on the characters like Garrus, Wrex, Joker, Ashley or Miranda. And BW decided to make the last part story-driven and NOT character-driven like ME1 and ME2.

From what I've seen FemSheps who romanced Thane or Jacob really got screwed. Its really hard not to hate Jacob after seeing what Bioware made him do to her.

I'll file this along with 'Why aren't we rewarded for staying faithful', in the good ideas bioware dropped drawer.

I wanted a scene with Miranda and Ashley. They are so alike and so different that their banter could have been good.
Thats a good point. Its also why it would've been so hard to choose which one to be with

Besides with an apocalyptic war going on, I did not want to see my crew (past or present in game's timeline) fight one another. ME1's LIs' rather passive mentions rather made me feel guilty. I don't think I would have felt guilty if they were yelling at my face about it. But that's just my take on it though.

Jacob: I love you Shepard, but what did you expect me to do? Wait forever?
Shepard: ...I was only under house arrest for a couple months...

I totally agree with you. When I heard Ashley was going to be back in ME3, I was anticipating alot of conflict with her, Tali and myself. I even brought them on a few missions incase it was just in the form of party banter. But not a word was really said

Ashley: Oh okay then

If you pick the other dialouge option it goes more into it. Ash is actually more ok with Tali than say Miranda. There is some catiness on the dreadnaught too. It is there just minimized. And I know they did cut some of the drama regarding Tali and the admirals. There were some Xen comments that got removed along with the quests around her.
But overall the Tali romance was very well done in 3. Maybe not as much screen time, but the time they got was overall good. Hell Rannoch and the dreadnaught is like one long romance related quest in some ways with Tali.

If you break up with her she dies.
EDIT: What I will say though is I'm surprised how the FemShep and Jacob romance dialogue played out. I heard that Jacob basically cheats and dumps FemShep and so I looked up the convo...not even an option to **** him out or say "I can't believe you would do this" or something along the typical lines of the cheated-on spouse. it was either "please kiss me I'm desperate for you" or "oh, that's great, I'm happy for you."
FemShep is poor Jacob's doormat >_> And Jacob got turned into a stereotype. *sigh* <_<
But it was interesting to see that some LIs were unfaithful like that. Though I think it could play out a bit differently...like it would make more sense for Ashley/Kaidan to cheat on Shep and romance someone else. The option to get them to break up could've been added. But I didn't play femshep and romance Jacob so not a problem for me. Sucks for the Femsheps who did though.

As I had been driving the rail road spike into 'em all
As I had fertilized each of their gardens
As I had put my hot dog in each of their buns
Thank you for allowing me that indulgence there
I really wanted to say something to Ash and Jack like "OK Here's how we settle this You two fight to the death no firearms who ever wins gets me."
Jack smears the walls with Ash, and comes over to my and says "Thanks Shepard that was easy, come here now" she jumps up on me and scene like the renegade love scene from ME2 plays.

Wait. We have something.
Okay, maybe we should do another protesting thread that simply tells BW we played ME for the characters and not just the story alone?
Wait ... I think I saw something like that as well.
Hmm ... maybe we need to create a protesting thread that asks for a better treatment of any sidelined characters regardless if romanceable or not?
Uhh ... seems there exists such a thread.
Seriously, I wonder if BW pays ANY attention to our requests, protests, wha'ever you name it - or if they simply say: "why do we deserve such fans?!".
Easy, BW: you got such fans 'cause we care for your creation. We care for the universe you created with the Mass Effect trilogy. We care for every single character, regardless if we hate a particular one or love another one. All of them are important, all of them mean something. Although you may decide what to do with them, you MUST HAVE KNOWN you'll upset the major part of your fandom by sidelining ANY romances except Liara's, by reducing any character's development except the new guys, Garrus and Liara.
Seriously, BW ... think about it. Try to understand why we people care for your characters and the romance arcs.

I'd imagine the scene:
BW: "Man these fans are complaining about the way we treated X?"
BW2: "good job guys...good job."

They have more issues to fight - and maybe they'll turn out to be quite good friends? Both women have a lot in common.
However, BW wasted the chance for epic banter. -.-
