I liked him, but not as much as some other characters. That's simply because I've only known him for one game, whereas characters like Garrus who have been around in all of the games and multiple playthroughs I had more time to get to know them and like them. Given more time, I can imagine liking James Vega as much as some of the other long-standing characters.

They'll flesh him out more in Mass Effect 4:Revenge of the Reapers

He's the best tank. Very, very hard to drop 'um in a fight.

And I approved of 'Loco', I won't say more.

And I'm a latino, he seemed fine to me overall.

Yes, finally.

I'm not latino, but a LOT of my friends that I've known since I was a kid, are. Honestly, there are tons of real life latinos that fit the stereotype better than Vega does. The character works very well because even though he doesn't forget his heritage (none of my friends do either, so that's what I'm going off of) he doesn't rub it in your face or anything.

Better than having Speedy Gonzales running around and shooting husks and shouting, "
Ándele, arriba señor[/i] Shepard!"

EDIT: Also, forgot to say this, but I was expecting to hate James too. He was surprisingly deep as a character, and I really just liked him overall. Really won me over with that sparring match he had with Shepard, and the fact that the shuttle crash was actually explained as him becoming slightly fatalistic after losing men under him.

Not a fan, though I never cared for Kaidan or Ashley either honestly (or Miranda or Jacob). I was all about Wrex, Garrus, Liara, and Tali in the first one. The biggest surprise in ME2 was Mordin...until he came along I didn't care for Salarians at all, but he was too awesome for words. Grunt was okay but he was no Wrex (I shed man tears when I saw Wrex for the first time in ME2). Still loved Garrus and Tali. I found Samara more interesting than Liara from ME1, but the lack of romance kind of killed that one. Jack, I was not a fan...far more interesting in ME3.

Anyway, Vega, just not a big deal for me. Probably on par with Kaidan and Ashley from ME1.

Yes. I was entirely ambivalent toward him prior to playing, so when I grew to know him I also began to appreciate him as well. He's now my favorite male human character in Mass Effect.

He's probably one of my favorite squadmates. His random chatter, and voice acting is top notch. Not to mention, his character is just fleshed out very well.

Yes, I thought the voice actor for him was one of the best in the game (there is still a lot of over-acting in video games, he kept it at a much more personal level) I also enjoyed his backstory.

I loved him :) he was quite funny and the fact that he is giving people nicknames like Lola and Sparks just earns him more sympathy points!

and his voice actor did a REALLY good job. never expected to like Vega ;D

Loved Vega. As prior-service myself I thought he was exceptionally well written, I imagine much of his character is lost on civilians.

I liked him for the same reasons, though I think his personality jives more with a junior enlisted man rather than an officer. They should have made him a Lance Corporal, or whatever the Mass Effect equivalent is.

Yeah, he's very E5 to me but I think that has less to do with him than it does the situation Shepard has thrust him into.  Sure, Shepard and the Normandy are technically Alliance but the outfit is more Dirty Dozen than a coherent military unit.  As an Alliance officer he should be third in command behind Shepard and Williams/Alenko and once Williams/Alenko depart the Normandy he should be the XO but because of the messed up chain of command he really doesn't have any responsibility.

The fact that he never raises this issue with Shepard is curious to me since all successful (western) militaries have (since ancient Roman times) placed such a high premium on discipline; and for good reason.  Probably just bad writing.

One of Vega's greatest contributions to the game is how his interaction creates so much characterization with other crew members.  His interactions with Vikarian and Cortez, for instance, are priceless and in Vikarian's case show a new side to an old friend while in Cortez's case they simply expand the character in way that wouldn't have possible without him.

Even Shepard sparring with him was a huge surprise to me and was a nice change of pace to the typical talking heads interaction which dominates dialog on the Normandy.

He was okay. He felt like a forced latino stereotype to me.

They went so hard with that, and the funny thing is, even though Freddie Prinze Jr. is latino, he does not sound THAT latino.

At first, I thought I would be indifferent towards Vega, or even hate him (just like was the case with Ashley, Kaiden and Jacob), but he was actually pretty freaking cool. He easily had more life and energy about him than most human squadmates you ever come across. He may have been a little strong on the stereotype side, but I found his presence enjoyable nonetheless.

I disliked the nickname thing. Felt a little gimmicky. Liked the character though.

I knew the VA would be high quality as soon as I read that it would be Freddie Prinze Jr. He's simply phenomenal in the final season of 24.

As for Vega, I'm more appreciative of his character on my second playthrough. His banter normally echoes my thought process when I'm running from a Reaper's beam, "Holy ****!"

I liked him but found him a little lightweight, a bit like Joker, there to make wisecracks but not really deep. Heck, I felt like I got to know Cortez and Traynor better than Vega.

I did, he was a bro, and fun to have around. Then again, I'm not completely uptight about every aspect of the game. I like to treat it as such; A videogame.

He wasn't bad,  thoughyou're not emotionally attached to him like you team like Garrus or Tali but hes more lively. Would of been funny to stick a Krogan like Grunt in the Shuttle bay to they would get along. I must say there wasn't all that much actual interaction/conversation with squad members though when their should of been more.

Expected to hate him, but I didn't. Now I just irritated because I expected him to be a LI, and he would have been perfect for one of my unattached femsheps.

Yeah, he was kinda corny, but I genuinely liked him. I don't get why there was such a backlash about his addition to the roster. After all, we got a ton of new characters added in ME2, and nobody whined about that, right? So why not have new squaddies in 3?
