I really liked him, which honestly shocked me. I was very much against the inclusion of new squadmates in ME3 (thought they should have brought back more from ME2) so I was predisposed to hate him. But Freddie Prinze Jr did a very decent VA job, and I liked the 'Lola' nickname for FemShep.

Same class =/= same character.

Grunt soldiers. Maintains the armory. Last of their squad. Joins Shepard's squad for no real reason other than "well, they're really good soldiers!" Annoyed by politicians and unfamiliar with how things work. Easily upset. Stupid.

Inaccurate description. I'll just leave it at that.

Of course you will. I wouldn't expect anything else from BioWare's Social Club.

And for your added annoyance, in a BioWare game same class does equals same character.

Related. Ashley and Vega are the same character and it's better to have Kaidan because of his tech and biotics instead of another soldier.

Nah. Vega is just a good-spirited idiot. Ashley is a Space Hitler (with her hate for everything non-human I actually wonder why she never joined Cerberus).

And on the topic - I really disliked Vega. After this moron called me Loko or Lola i wanted to put him in the airlock.

He didn't add anything...

He was definitely just put in because EA wanted some one who would appeal to the shooter/casual market.

I don't know anyone who wouldn't prefer Legion, Mordin, Thane, Kasumi, Jack, Wrex or Miranda instead

Vega was funny. I didn't care for the over-the-top mohawk meathead look, but I liked his banter.

Certainly a better written character then many other squadmates, considering he was only in one game. And yes, I liked him a lot.

Yes, Ashley sooo approves of Cerberus and of Terra Firma's goals...

I was prepared to like him as an Alliance grunt. Unfortunately, when they decided to turn him into "the next Shepard" it ruined the character for me.

He was alright. The only thing I didn't like was the nickname he gave Shep which was annoying after a while. A simple renegade choice will fix that though, so he will say commander instead....you know what I mean "loco."

I thought Vega was great, an improvement over both Kaidan and Ashley, in terms of human Alliance companions, as well as Jacob.

I didn't like Kaiden or Jacob either, One Human biotic in ME2 (Miranda) was enough, they should have either made Jacob a tech specialist or added a second Quarian Tech/Combat squaddie, Kal'reegar comes to mind.

And Kaiden, don't get me started on that whiney little ponce...

You can tell VS to go with Hackett that should've left open a spot for the player to pick whomever from ME - ME2 squadmates to be a FT member BW could've also had you dismiss Vega as being insubordinate, or get him killed on Mars this would leave open a second, and finally they could've has shep decide on the spot does he want to take Eva's body with him and by doing so EDI gets a body or leave it and we hear no more of the unit and it leaves open a third players choice spot. All these easy gaps would've been a goodway to allow the players to customize their own squad to their playing style.

Of all the 2 squadmates we could've gotten to pickup: Kolyat (after thane dies), Miranda, Jack, Samara/Mornith, Jacob all these people weren't chained to their jobs like Wrex was they could've also opened up brandnew 3 characters to become FT crew like: Feros girl (shaila), Kal Reegor, Turian general from Omega, Turian from Novia back in ME Lorik Qin, and Athena

So if I wanted my crew to have Kal, Qin, and Samara on my team w/ BWs choices the crew would look like this: Garrus, Tali, Liara, Kal, Qin, Samara. BW has the first 3 set to join I as the player get to handpick the last 3. As it is right now I tell VS to leave and I can't fill her/his spot I just have less crew for it.

Tali is nothing like Mordin.  Garrus is nothing like Legion.  Javik is nothing like Kaidan.  Wrex is nothing like Jacob.  Ashley is nothing like Grunt.  Liara is nothing like Jack.  All same class, all different characters, species notwithstanding.

As for James, he's a good egg.  Don't like his Lola nickname for FemShep - guess he's never heard of The Kinks, or Barry Manilow. :P  His powers are fine, his personality seemed to go from cool/awesome to background noise to cool again.  He is a soldier, lost his squad, and only wanted to fight - it's like he had no direction without Shepard.  His insubordination got annoying at times, even with the Normandy being a loose ship.  Yet with that dumb grunt first impression, he is a likable character with some good humor and normalcy.  Like others said, he's not extreme so the subtleties get lost.

Thought he was well written, the VA did a good job, and he was useful in combat. Would've prefered him in ME2 instead of Jacob.

At OP, I like him. But what I was going to write has spoilers. So check out my private message.

Let's just say that he is a good combination of good combat abilities and a great sense of humour. Still young but has had some interesting stories to tell and some epic interactions with Comander Shepard and other squad members. He may come across like an idiot but he does use his brain from time to time.
