Bioware's misstep with Tali's face has far larger consequences.

The overall design of BioWare's Tali/quarian face is fine, its just done in such a half assed way. The fingers plain don't match the in game models, and because its a hastily edited google image it shows her standing in the sun without her suit which doesn't make any sense. It would have to be taken on Rannoch else she'd probably die from removing her mask let alone her suit (read Rannoch codex), yet she had no opportunity to pose for this photo in the events of ME3.

This laziness with the quarian face led to another plot hole. During Legion's mission where you enter the geth consensus you see its memories of the intitial geth-quarian war. For some reason the quarians are all wearing suits despite the fact that they wouldn't have needed them at that point.

that's explained by Legion, he explains that everything you see in the interface is displayed in a way that would seem familiar to you, and since Shepard wouldn't know what Quarians (besides Tali if she's romanced, big if and doesn't show what all quarians look like) look like, Legion shows them in their suits.

I just can't understand why they would take such a lazy approach to this, when it would be so easy to get right, I can't think of any reason why you wouldn't just get somebody to do a really cool concept of what Quarians look like and run with it.

There are countless examples online, created by fans, which are infinitely better than the stock image used. It's lazy and there's no two ways about it, but again, the puzzling thing to me is that it's harder to mess this up than it is to get it right....it's a bizarre decision that they took for no good reason.

I still have to laugh when people complain about the face. Oh no, it was photoshopped. That makes it crappy, I guess? Never mind the picture itself. That obviously doesn't matter. What apparently matters is how it was made. Hilarious.

I don't think its the photoshop that bothers people, it's the fact that it's a shopped getty royalty free image .

When I saw it, at first I wasn't sure what to think and laughed thinking Tali was just putting that as a joke since Shepard started smiling...then he didn't laugh and I realized that was her.

I'd say this popuar fan art is a lot closer to what I would prefer Tali to look like.

I agree, this picture is really so much nicer than the photoshop (I think the long hair is not fitting, and the dress made from wool.. even if it was taken on Rannoch, the dress and everything does not fit into the lore), it would still look "humanlike" but would fit a lot better

There are many things that bother me about that photo.

- When was it taken
- Where was it taken
- Why is she not wearing an environmental suit
- Why is she wearing cotton/woolen fabric
- Why does she have nail polish on
- Here fingers are to close together
- How does that hair fit into her helmet

There maybe more, but they are the first that came to mind.

That is freakishly accurate about everything that ran through my mind, before I even knew it was a bad photoshop job I just couldn't help but feel someting was just terribly off about all of it

I think this comes down to a problem with the communitys need to be spoon fed everything. Sometimes it's better to just not know. I think Bioware felt the need to apease their fanbase and ended up going with an easy option that wouldn't offend or disgust anyone.

Same thing with the Reapers motivations, I personelly think it would have been better to just not know why they do what they do, but I guess Bioware feared that not putting in some explanation would rile the masses.

Consider the possibility that they didn't do the full reveal of tali's face because they wanted to save it for the end of the game. What a great final romance scene. However, they had to show something, so a picture was a logical way to tide us over until the full reveal... So it didn't look like they cOmpletely blew it off

these are everything that bothers me about the picture as well. the only way i could see her taking the picture is if the quarians have a holo deck.

She was sexy, until you realized that it was a poorly photoshopped stock photo.

Seriously, BioWare? What the hell happened there?!

Who tokk all these ideas, the endings and lazy as **** pictures and went: 'Yeah, that's a great idea. I mean the fans will love to speculate!'...over if you were just tired or insane.

Why does the photo being stock matter? As far as the in game content goes the photo is fine. I like tali with dark hair, least they didnt make her a red head or blonde

What if it wasent lazyness, but time constraints that led to them picking a photo that best matched their vision of tali. I also dont think they intended the player to use tools to zoom in and analyze ever aspect of the photo. From a distance at regular camera angles the photo looks just fine.

Lastly I understand if tali was modelled after someone famous like tyra banks, but you would never have seen the source photo unless you purposefully went digging around the net for it

Everyone is so negative

the bioware in your example would literally already on their knees begging us for forgiveness for the ending. probably with 3 new ending already on the altar as peace offering.
The thing is,..... this is not the case.

Damn Bioware for making Tali really pretty!

ME 3 fans are a tough crowd.

Maybe people would have been satisfied if they went full out Kara www.ign.com/videos/2012/03/21/kara-untitled-quantic-dream-project-making-of-kara on her.

The faces underneath were originally never meant to be shown. The quarians' character designs have things like fabric cowls instead of hair, ect. That's fine for one game, but when you make it so deep that it has it's own built-in wikipedia, you've definitely got to come up with some sort of answer. I was definitely disappointed when I finally saw her face.

That said, I do have to admit something I didn't want to...looking at the human-like fan art people are posting, it all looks *a lot* like what we got in the game. I didn't want to believe that - I thought the Getty approach was lazy, especially when they didn't even change the backdrop - but really, the fan art people like keeps showing a human head with the same eyes, nose ridge, and black circuity things that we got.

I do get why they didn't do a model, too much wasted resources for something very few of us only see one time. So I understand doing a photo. I just wish they would have colored some of their concept art (which they must have) instead of the stock photo of the persian supermodel. Tali's not supposed to look like a supermodel anyway, it turns the whole "like her for who she is" shtick into a cliche.

Unfortunately, unless future Mass Effect games take place in the 300 year window before the trilogy, they're going to have to make the quarians look like this now.

Looking at The Art of Mass Effect (available from Barnes and Noble for $25.99 Image IPB ), some of the concept art they had for Quarian faces were pretty damn scary.

But I agree that the stock image idea was pretty bad.

After the game, I thought that it was kinda cheap taht we didn't see her face, but then I realized it was the right thing to do. SOMEONE would be disappointed, and it's not a huge thing to reveal her face. Let us all have our illusions.

I personally prefer THIS one:

Obv. not realistic, but I just really like it.

I've pretty much despised all the fan designs for Quarians I've seen. Most of them are even worse than the stock photo (which, while bad, isn't nearly as big a deal as some would have it).

Personally, I would've liked the species to consist of aliens actually looking alien, perhaps with some fleeting resemblance to the Geth to suggest the creator's image.

You forgot who is taking the picture and how is she still alive. The picture just reeks with inconsitency. As far as I'm concerend, this picture should not exist it makes zero sense given the rules of the setting. And analyzing it doesn't help either, it's like trying to analyze a beaver with it's head shoved up a purple rhino's butt that's floating on the dark side of the moon. Should I sit there and inspect the details? or be so shocked that such a thing even exists.

Actually I loved the DLC for 2 where you see the guy intergrated with the VI program...they make his face out of cubes? It would have been neat to have Tali still stuck in the suit, but she uses one of those suit programs she's always mentioning to get a sort of tactile impression like that. Jordy LaForge vision or something. They could have even kept the shape of the model they already have, without actually showing us what she looks like. We already know that Shep knows, and I would have been happy enough. I just wanted something after getting so close in 2. My "NooooooOOOOOOOOOOO" carried for miles.

Indeed. I am not a Talimancer, nor do I much like the Quarian race but I still wished they had been actual alien looking. So since I never saw her face in my playthrough, I can still picture them to look as whatever I want. xD

As for the photoshopped image and the fact she looks human, lazy is all I say or to make some Talimancers happy that she's attractive looking and not a bug. (I'm saying some because I know some don't care how she looked like)

Should have been more alien looking. I think the picture of Tali is relatively pretty, but it doesn't fit when you think about it. They just look like mutated humans, now. Seriously. They're born with 3 fingers and backwards legs because of too much radiation. Don't Quarians have a different form of DNA than humans? Why are they the closest match to humans?

Seems odd for them to define what an entire race looks like with a stock image, but either they were just in a massive time crunch or figured you'd never see Quarians again.
