Bioware's misstep with Tali's face has far larger consequences.

The main issue I have with the photo is the fingers: they're too close together because of how lazily they just cropped the other two out.

Obviously its her..

Google and you will find good and bad shots of anyone.

Partially my point, seemed like there was a little bit of selective bias there...

As was said before, there was really nothing they could have done to completely satisfy everyone.

To be fair, they did try to make her facial structure different from Miss England 2005. The differences are just very subtle:

Image IPB

From what I see, Tali's eyes are angled and have a greater separation compared to her human counterpart. The base of her nose was slightly altered in order to make her nostrils look like slits. They even tried to reduce the amount of flesh/skin above her nostrils (remnants of the shadow where that skin should be is still present).

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if the quality of the photoshop was higher, or if they used an original image instead a stock. It doesn't matter if they made Tali more "alien". Tali's face reveal would be limited to an image, and you'd still have unsatisfied people wanting a 3D animated model.

A misallocation of resources (Diana Allers), time constraints, and budget are possible candidates as to why we were limited to a photo. If I remember correctly, the leaked script detailed an additional scene on Rannoch which establishes the backstory of the photo. Scenes like this were not the only ones that didn't make it into the final product.

Personally, I like the canon design. It fits with what I've read from Mass Effect: Ascension, the codex, and old discussions centered on convergent evolution. Just to echo what most of you are saying, I was hoping for a much better reveal (showing an animated face on Rannoch or love scene, for instance).

If you're the same Garlador that I'm thinking of (MK Online), then this should be good...

Yeah, they messed up here.  She should have been shown on Rannoc when all was said and done.  That was the most perfect, opportune moment that they could have asked for, and they blew it.

Does anyone not understand...

They went the photo route for a reason.

When Bioware put up the poll, asking fans if they should reveal tali's face, it was split. Even amongst the Tali fans, some didn't want to see her face.

Using the picture method is best.

Those who wanted to see her face can seek out the picture. Those who didn't can simply ignore it. It's not like you'd accidentally see it anyway. It's out of the way.

But as for the photoshop ordeal... Yes, that was poorly done.

So all of the Talimancers out there (including me) now know what is finally under the mask of everyone's favourite Quarian.

The simple fact is that not a single solitary Taliwhacker is/was going to be happy with her face, no matter what Bioware did/does.

No matter what they did the Talifappers were/are going to complain, whine and weep on and on - as evidenced - so they took the middle ground and made her the purple space elf everyone said she'd be.

You have no one to blame but yourselves, because the rest of us didn't give a damn.

Comments like this are not even a little bit productive. Calling everyone who has an opinion on this a 'Taliwacker, mancer, fapper is just an immature way to throw a sterotype at anyone that considers themselves the least bit observant. Yeah, of course someone is always going to be unhappy with something, you can throw that dumb argument in with any topic going on in the world right now. That doesn't mean they don't have a point. Face it, as long as they are going to go ahead with a reveal, There is simply no reason that they couldn't have done so in-person. They took the time to create in-game models for all kind of new characters that hardly anyone cared about (Allers, for one) but didn't take the time to do it with one of the main characters of the entire trilogy. Sorry, but that makes no sense. And just stop with the whole 'the rest of us' garbage. You have absolutely no clue as to how many others share your opinion, so stop acting like you represent some huge, invisible, non-verbal majority.

For the record, I didn't romance Tali, nor is she my favorite character. I am simply using logic based on history. The bigger the reveal, the bigger the attention to detail. I can guarantee that no matter how many people would 'be upset no matter what', there would be a whole heck of a lot less upset by a physical reveal versus a VERY BAD photoshop. We are talking about a AAA development company here, not some random startup indie developer. There is absolutely nothing wrong with holding them to a higher standard.

Ummm revealing the face of an entire species that has been hidden away behind a mask for three games?
I'd say that is a very big deal, and revealing what the Quarians as a whole look like, should have been handled much better.

The problem with that is that due to an unsatisfying and lazy job on handling Tali's face, they've accidentally created a problem with the other Quarians as well.

In actual fact I think it completely countermands the descriptions of Quarians by others as well.

Grunt mentions that a Quarian takes effort to stab, as you have to twist the knife through their plates first.

Javik says that even back then Quarians were regarded as very attractive, possibly more so then the Asari.

Also doesn't make sense once you look at Tali herself.

behind her visor, she has glowing eyes, might be because of the visor but we don't know. She also has some very sharp features to her. And doesn't appear to have long hair either.

Sorry I'm just saying that someone missed up bigtime at Bioware. They better not the second time.

First off, that description of what you think Grunt says is about the Turians, not Quarians.  All he says about Quarians is "Not so much" referring to them not being soft (assumedly because of the suits)  He then says : "Turians, you have to twist the blade I guess.  Don't see much point to it though. Ha 'much point'.  Never mind."

As for the glowing dots seen on  the visor, it can probably be attritbuted to the visor itself, and not quarian eyes.

Quarian hair size is a complete unknown.  the only hint about it is in the picture, so it's impossible for the hair in the picture to go against any previous established hair, because there was none to compare.  Especially because the female helmets were large with what looks like plenty of space for hair (although I admit Tali's got a giant mane of hair)

I was a little put off though from how much she resembled Miranda.  And I will say they look a little too human.  The Asari at least have tentacle heads and blue skin. I know it's difficult to make characters look both alien and attractive at the same time, but it seems the Quarians are basically  just humans with 2 fingers and a thumb.

absolutely. personally I feel this picture hits the nail on the head as far as combining attractive human traits and the unique appearance of an alien. Difficult to create? yes sir. this picture really does the quarian race justice if you ask me

I feel this picture needs reposting as this should have been Tali. Alien, attractive and she looks like the geeky girl that Tali is, it fits Tali's personality.

I think it would have pleased more fans than what we got.

The catch being that Liara's face wasn't based on Ali Hillis, but on Jilian Murray, if the ME Wiki is to be believed. BTW, another sign of preferential treatment for Dr. T'Soni, her and ShepLoo being two ME1 non-voice-actor-face-based-on-real-person related characters. ME2 also gave us Samara and Morinth being based on the same person, a model named Rana McAnear. (which is funny in and of itself, as Maggie Baird, Samara's VA, doesn't look that different from her).

But yeah, for the most part, ME characters could have been played in a movie by their VAs. Why BioWare decided not to go down that road with Tali we may never know =)

more like "eww look at that mutant ear and those fakey asari forehead flaps"

seriously <.< much prefer a more human looking quarian. Besides, these fan art attempts dont make Tali look like the cute, slightly awkwardly nerdy girl that Tali is.

These would've been OK.

Here's a link to the Quarian entry from The Art of Mass Effect Universe. Check the first image, and tell me we were supposed to get a straight-up human exemplar.

False. Quote: “ Quarian facial structure and hair actually makes them the most similar to humans in physical appearance.” Emphasis mine.

Again, look at the actual BioWare concept art I linked above. That is what they meant by similar. Not someone who's by all accounts a nearly perfect sample of what a human looks like.
