Bioware's misstep with Tali's face has far larger consequences.

Nice work.

Out of curiosity, roughly how long did that take you to construct?

Around 2 hours for her head in Zbrush. The backdrop is an actual screenshot with the model's head overlaid on her body. Then about 30 minutes in photoshop for minor touch-ups.

Again, look at the actual BioWare concept art I linked above. That is what they meant by similar. Not someone who's by all accounts a nearly perfect sample of what a human looks like.

As subtle as they may be, the differences I pointed out earlier still exist in Tali's photo. Taken a step further, in order to make the differences more prominent, you'd have something like this:

Image IPB

Slanted eyes with wide separation, and a thin nose. Neck should be a bit longer here, but that's beside the point.

I don't want to get into the whole "too human vs. too alien" debate, especially when the arguments boil down to "my opinion is better than yours." Why mock other people for their personal tastes when you know that disagreement is inevitable given the mixed reception in this thread?

Nice job. Thanks.

They should have actually devoted effort to revealing Tali's face, or not included it at all. That pissed me off almost as much as the ending, the poorly photoshopped stock picture.

Yeah, this was extremely dumb of them, no idea how could think this made sense or would please fans. The Tali/Quarian reveal had to be one of the most desired things, and they completely f'd it up.

They should either have done it properly, or not at all.

This laziness with the quarian face led to another plot hole. During Legion's mission where you enter the geth consensus you see its memories of the intitial geth-quarian war. For some reason the quarians are all wearing suits despite the fact that they wouldn't have needed them at that point.

Not even remotely a plot hole, because Shepard asks why they all appear in suits. Legion tells Shepard that it's because the only quarians that Shepard has seen have all worn suits. The visual representation of memories in the Consensus is tied to what Shepard is familiar with.

The picture was fine, very artistic way to reveal Tali without ruining the quarian mystique, god you're all a bunch of whiny babies.

Her face should have been exposed at the conclusion of the Rannoch arc. They set up a perfect moment for it, and totally blew it. The lazy shoop afterwards is just a slap in the face. I honestly hate how they handled Tali's face more than I hate the ending.

Well, I wouldn't go so far, but I have to agree - the moment was well prepared. I am afraid that this is one of the pieces where they did rush.

I like how Tali looks, and for me, it is not problem that they use a stock photo of some girl, but I would be geatfull if they make some dlc, where Tali is animated with that face in gameplay... that would be really great.
By the way, sorry for my english :)

I couldn't agree more. I would've been happy if they actually created her face instead of taking a picture from the Internet and doing some lousy photo shop.

My personal take on the matter:

***Late one night inside Bioware Edmonton, near the end of production***

ME1: "The boss said we need to have Tali's face ready, pronto."
ME2: "Yeah, but did you see what the design team did? Have you SEEN Diana Allers???"
ME1: "Of course not. You know how busy we've... *is shown Diana Allers* HOLY S#!&!!! Who is that supposed to be?"
ME2: "Jessica Chobot... "
ME1: *performs The Sign of the Cross*
ME2: "So we're on the same page, right? '3D' can't touch this."
ME1: "No way man- the boss'll be pissed- but no way! We need SOMETHING though, and fast."
ME2: "I know they'll never fully understand, but we owe the fans something. Booting up Photoshop..."
ME1: "I guess it's too late for us now, but... perhaps the next cycle will succeed where this one failed?"
ME2: "We can only hope. If only they could understand how bad it really could have been."

Her face is just fine photoshoped or no.

Also what other descriptions did you get beyond their skin is rough? I don't recall anyone saying what a Quarian looked like only that Athena said some of us are old enough to remember what they looked like under those suits.

We can clearly see in all games basic structure of her face she has a human nose, eye placement, jaw line, her veil constantly acts like hair so yeah she looks humanoid you think they'd suddenly change that for some weirdo scaled alien. Shep looked please to see her not repulsed which further added to the she's humanoid looking. Not to mention from the knees up she's humanoid at best at worse Asarioid.

For the stabbing effect Grunt didn't say they took off their suits to stab them ever think they've got tons of layers like Samurai or bullet proof vests? That's why its harder not that their bones or skin is. Tali is pretty it also depends on what the player feels is beautiful so Javik's statement is in the eye of the beholder and both he and shep say they're pretty for them, we also know Quarians made geth within reason to their image why else give them head lamps if not to represent their glowing eyes?

They shouldn't fix the photo or make it a new girl they should just take her helmet off or when she takes off her mask on Rannoch just show her face. Seeing her hasn't done one bit to change my view on her race if anything it's made me more curious to see the faces of the other Quarians I know. I mean I did just get back their homeworld they could all take a few weeks off let me see who they are so we can truly be friends. I feel so one sided on this part of our friendships they know what I look like yet I don't know what they look like.

I have no problem with what Tali looks like. (though I still think it would be awkard to have long flowing hair in an envirosuit)  Only in how they showed it.

I really like how they made her (purple/bluish skin and Turian body structure, but otherwise humanoid).

I will admit I was half-expecting Quarians to have some kind of carapace like the Turians, based on all prior evidence, but I'm glad they don't.

On a side note, the markings down her neck?  I'm interpreting those as insect-like airholes to make her more alien.

In retrospect...I'm glad they didn't show it.  Bioware is not known for making good lookin faces that aren't totally non-human.  Most of their faces that are supposed to look "hot" wind up looking hideous (Miranda, Diana, etc).

Hell, even default Femshep looks like a total troll.

And it looks like they were going for that with her picture.  If they'd stuck to having her "cute" like Kelly, the reporter girl, etc, then Tali probably would have come out fine.

Agree not a plot hole. Shep has only seen Tali the geth who recorded the other Quarians also recorded their faces and how they looked Tali isn't their twins therefore they only show as masked because what shep knows Tali to be like is not what any of them, nor Rann, nor Illium Quarian girl, ect look like ie each Quarian face is unique just like custom sheps.

I don't have that much of a problem with how she looks in that photo.

Its just that I just saw her as having a different skin tone is all.

False. Quote: “ Quarian facial structure and hair actually makes them the most similar to humans in physical appearance.” Emphasis mine.

Alright, so Quarians are the most similar to humans.

And then we have Asari, which are basically humans with "tentacle" hair and no ears.

So for Quarians to be the most similar, they have to look more like humans than Asari do. Otherwise Quarians would be described as the second most similar to humans. Make sense?

So the picture that Bioware gave us is actually loyal to all of that, and I'm happy with it. Just give us 3D model please!

Oh look its ppl saying Tali looks bad ):. I romanced Tali and her picture is good, if lazy. To be perfectly honest, I am fine with how it looks but 1) hand needs to be fixed 2) Needs to be animated in game. I want to talk to tali face to face, not behind her mask.

The lack of effort on bioware's part is saddening, but I am glad they went this route for her face as it is "safe" it doesn't take her face into a completely new direction from what was already described as "very human-like features" for Quarians. Not a big fan of the "starfish on face" Tali I've been seeing a lot of ppl like. It adds ears, the face looks like you can peel it off, and doesn't fit with what we already know about Quarians from the books and game codex.

Sometimes sticking with the safe route is better than the risky route. Imagine if they had taken the simple way with ME3's ending. Choices mattered, Good, Bittersweet, bad endings based on EMS. It would have been fine. A very simple but easy solution. Shepard lives+Galaxy saved, Shepard dies+Galaxy saved, Reapers win. Easy.

Grunt never said anything about plates, he said for quarians, "You have to work the blade, I guess". Since he was talking about severing spines, maybe quarians just have extremely tough verterbral columns.
