So, who exactly wanted multiplayer anyways?

Now I could be coming down with Alzheimer's, but I have no recollection of people being up in arms demanding an online component be added to the Mass Effect series after the 2nd installment came out. There were some mutterings of people wanting a co-op mode for the story or some such, but this horde mode unlock centric "Operation Arbitrary!" nonsense?

Who the hell wanted this? It's not a *bad* game to play for an hour, but it's nothing anyone who played Mass Effect gives much of a **** about. Here's my theory: EA shoehorned this bull**** in. There's nobody besides the biggest loudest and most obnoxious game company in the world who could look at the feedback from ME1/2 and think:

"So you like personalized story and characterization huh? That's nice. We like charging as much as possible for as little content as possible. Multiplayer is *AWESOME* for that, so that's what we're gonna sell you. Enjoy!"

Honest to god guys, how are we currently at a point in history in which "INTENSE GAMEPLAY!" and promotional weekend weapon unlocks are the things being advertised about a Mass Effect title? This isn't COD in space guys, stop trying to make it into such...

EA wanted multiplayer, and they're the only people whose opinions really matter.

I like multiplayer. Dunno. Quite enjoying even now, and the weekend events are just incentives to keep people engaged, effective practice so far. Shoehorned or not, I like the way it turned out. Sure as hell beats the Team Assault prototype it grew out from.

It's all part of the "catering to a larger audience" strategy they have nowadays. I also suspect they're still on their treasure hunt for the glorious COD crowd.

In short, I think the bean counters demanded it. And if I remember right, it has been announced last fall and seems to be the main culprit for postponing the release.

Some people like it.  But very very few fans wanted it.  And those who did ask for multiplayer usually wante co-op with someone else able to play squadmates in the main campaign.

Hey OP, did you actually play the multiplayer?

Plus, of course it matters what EA wants. You really want games that are 100% fan-service? Haha, I actually wish you'd get what you want, just to see how you hate it in the end. xD

As someone that pretty much hated the idea of MP originally, I have to say that I'm actually having a lot of fun with it. It helps that I have a few RL friends to play with (though now I think nothing of just playing a match with random folks, found a few nice ones too)

Seriously, anyone that hates the idea of it should at least try it for an hour. Think of it this way - it's something to do until BioWare sorts out the ending. ;D

Good GOD I am tired of hearing that particular line. You wanna know the literal translation of that phrase from corporate into english?

"I don't care what you want, this is what I want."

Seriously, that answer is a direct acknowledgement by a company that it has no interest in catering to it's existing audience's tastes.

If I had known how it would be done and integrated, I'd have rooted for it from the beginning. I never wanted it because I wasn't sure HOW it would work with the main game, moreso without sacrificing singleplayer content. I'm just glad I was proven wrong, that's all. Not asking for something doesn't equal that turning out to be greedy corporate content shoehorned in for the money. It's quality stuff, I like it that Bioware took the risk in experimenting with it. That's enough for me.

Was there ever a big movement on these forums for multiplayer? Or was this an EA decision to grab more market share?

No and yes. Near as I can tell anyway...

Oh, and let the record show I have played the damned mode (as was implied by original post...), and like I said it's not bad. It's standard horde mode ala Unreal Tournament rebuilt in ME3's engine. An entertaining diversion? Sure.

But it does not now nor has it ever had any business taking up space on a ME game's disks. It doesn't belong there. It makes no sense for it to be there, and its presence actively detracts from the things I want there.

Since I've some professional experience with PR and advertising, how do you think it makes me feel?

For me all these phrases boil down to "we take you for idiots that can't read between the lines". In short, every premade PR phrase - and there are a lot of these around - is going down like an open insult.

That'd be an acceptable answer if I was a 12 year old kid, ME3 was tonight's dinner and Bioware/EA were my parents.

Then I remembered I was a grown man, ME3 is a game that's been in the works for years and Bioware/EA are companies that're supposed to be smart enough to know who the hell they're selling to.

I've got quite a feeling that there currently are people with rotating dollar signs in their eyes overriding the advice of their marketing and market research departments.

Bioware have talked about for a few times. They had considered MP from the beginning back when they started working on ME1, but the mechanics didn't fit. They rolled out Team Assault a few years later, but it was too radical and was made into ME3's multiplayer. Guys had a wish to do something from the start and they made it happen with ME3, I think that's great.

Oh yeah, this was a real victory for creative visionaries everywhere. I'm certain there was a big meeting one day before Bioware got bought up by EA where some well dressed official stood up and proudly stated:

"Ladies and gentlemen, I have a dream. I believe that one day, we can achieve something... unprecedented. We can do the impossible- we can change gaming forever! How? Simple, with hard work and 5 years of planning maybe... *maybe*... one day we'll be able to design a functioning horde mode. I know it's a tall order, but by gum if we wade through all this story and continuity **** we might just see the light at the end of the tunnel. And that light... is horde mode."

You know I hated the idea of MP before release. I don't play and really have never played MP in any form other Carcassone on my iphone. I played the MP in the demo just to see how ME3 would feel not wanting to spoil the real game by playing the demo. you know what? I like it. I think it is a great addition to the game. The co-op works well for me (because otherwise I'd likely die horribly in PvP) but the timeframe is the best part. I can play a set of rounds on Silver in < 30 minutes. I really can't play (or more to the point am unable) the "real" game for that short a stretch.

MP is boring and repetitive, but I don't play multi in general. It's just not for me.

I would prefer they spent the resources on some exploration missions instead (like Mako missions in ME1), but... MP means money from microtransactions! That's the main reason it exists, I think.
