Unlike many, I'm not mad about the ending. I think what's there is good, but it's woefully incomplete and as a result ends up being very vague and unsatisfying. The ending left me with a lot of questions, which I've listed below to illustrate my point. Italicized portions are notes for clarity. Spoilers abound.
Consequences and Rebuilding
- Why does using the Crucible cause the destruction of the mass relays?
(While it's a point that wouldn't be clear during the main story, its purpose is left unclarified, even after its serial destruction of all galactic mass relay technology.) - Did the destruction of the mass relays also cause the destruction of their host solar systems? If not, why?
(ME2's Arrival DLC tells us that destroying the relays releases enough energy to destroy its host solar system, a fact which is touched upon several times in ME3 as well. Further, Joker's flight from the energy beam shows that it is indeed destructive, otherwise Normandy would not have been damaged) - Why would non-AI machines still be functional after choosing to destroy the Reapers?
(We are told that choosing to destroy the Reapers will destroy all synthetic life, but how an energy beam could differentiate between a synthetic and computer-driven starship or even a VI is not explained) - What becomes of the gigantic, multi-species fleets and flotillas that are now stranded in the Sol system? Are they indeed stranded in Sol? If not, why? Also, what becomes of other populated planets and systems that have lost mass relay technology?
(Billions upon billions of officers are stranded in Sol system, which wouldn't have the resources to sustain such a population, even with all the deaths on Earth]. If it's possible for everyone to just 'go back home', it's not mentioned, nor is any possible method of inter-system space travel) - Doesn't the destruction of the mass relays mean that the galactic community no longer exists, thereby invalidating Shepard's efforts to unite the galactic species?
(Our task during the entirety of the game is to unite all species under one banner, but destroying the mass relays would cause the various solar systems to become isolated from one another, which undoes all that work) - Is mass relay technology reconstructed? Alternatively, how do various solar systems adapt to not having mass relay technology?
(Since it's the only means to travel between solar systems, a replacement would have to be developed and constructed in place of the previous mass relays) - Is it possible for the various galactic species to rebuild on their home planets? If not, how can they settle outside of Sol system without the mass relays? If so, how is this accomplished without mass relay technology?
(Whether or not the various species have the resources or population to rebuild at all is unclear.)
- (So-called 'Shepard Lives' scene) Is this Shepard? If so, does this mean he/ she is alive? Also, if Shepard is alive, does he/ she attempt to reunite with the friends and loved ones?? How did he survive the destruction of the Citadel?
(In each ending choice, Shepard is killed, or destroyed in some significant way. ) - (The 'Stargazer' scene) How do these two people know of Shepard's exploits? How far in the future is this? What planet is this?
(While the identity of the two people might not be important, it's not clear as to how or why Shepard's story was passed on. All this scene tells us is that the events of the game occurred, which we already know. Furthermore, we don't get any information as to how the galaxy has been affected since the story's conclusion) - Did Joker retreat from the Battle of Earth?
(He would only be able to stay ahead of the Crucible's energy beam if he had already gone through the Sol relay, which means he'd have retreated for some reason before the Battle of Earth had ended) - When the Normandy crashes, how are none of Joker's bones broken? Were there more than three survivors of the crash? Did they manage to activate a distress beacon? If so, was it answered? By whom?
(A crash forceful enough to tear apart the Normandy seems like it would wreak havoc on Joker's brittle bones, or even kill him. This is another scene whose purpose is unclear; as there seems to be no narrative within it, beyond the Normandy crashing and the characters being marooned on a planet.)
- Does the Citadel Council still play a role in leading galactic society?
(Where they were during and after the war is not explained) - Is something contructed to replace the Citadel?
(Since the Citadel is destroyed after sending out the shockwave, and it's not clear as to whether or not the community on a galactic level exists, it's also not clear as to whether or not a replacement for the Citadel would be constructed) - Are there civilians and/ or council members on board the Citadel when it's moved to Earth?
(No mention is made of any evacuation of the Citadel, and the loss of 13 million lives aboard during its destruction isn't mentioned at all)
