I really liked him. He was likable, seemed to have his priorities together, and felt like a normal person along for a wild ride. People often think he is stupid, but that is not really fair. Most of the people on the Normandy are Brilliant engineers, AI, tech specialists, scientists, or very experienced at leadership/tactics. In that crowd, most normal people would seem a little dumb. He is not dumb at all, just an average Joe with a friendly nature.

Plus...

"Hey Liara, ever find any dinosaurs?"

"No, I study artifacts not.. Oh... You were joking..."

"I just like dinosaurs..."

:P

I honestly don't think he was a bad character but I do feel they could have done a lot more with him to give an incentive for fans since ME1 to actually consider picking him over the squad mates they've already developed attachments to, but then again bioware was pretty blunt in saying he was aimed at newer players

forgot to add, i ALWAYS bring him and Ash with me for the final part of London, just seemed right to have your other 2 human squadmates who are also military with you...

I did the same. It's humanity's Earth and it's humans who will take it back.

I really didn't expect to like Vega, but I must say I think he's a very cool addition to squad and is already one of my favourites.

His VO did a really good job.

Same here.  Prior to playing, I was quite worried he may be some personality-free Doom Guy type but actually I ended up really liking him.

I didn't mind him actually, found him better then Jacob, and he was a likeable character. Granted not as interesting as having Thane or Samara back, but he wasn't that bad.

I hated Vega. I kept wishing I could kick him off my ship like Allers.

Well, he felt a big shallow, but than a more renegade character may have gotten along better with him. Strangely, I generally didn't feel very attached to the various human squad mates (neither Ashley nor Kaidan) - all human characters that I actually like are either NPCs (Dr. Chakwas, Joker) or DLC (Zaeed).

I actually have a Shepard called Lola. She and Vega are going to feel verrry familiar.

He's made me think better of Freddie Prinze Jr, something I never thought I'd do after Scooby Doo.

I liked him. His dialogue in missions and with other crew members were in character (as stereotypical as it was) and rather humorous. I was actually a little disappointed that he wasn't an LI option, considering the friendly and flirty relationship he can have with FemShep.

I didn't hate him. I wasn't impressed either, especially given the fact that Shepard is some kind of ultra-experienced super-soldier, possibly a master hacker and infiltrator, and they had this guy as his babysitter? Would have made more sense to have someone more like an infiltrator type, with a more serious personality, rather than a jarhead like Vega, in order to keep some Shepards theoretically under control, not that Shepard apparently resisted or tried to secretly get in and out messages and help prepare people, possibly through Shadow Broker Liara, even with the Galaxy at stake...

James is actually a good character who just gets off to a bad start in the game. His early dialogue is painfully awkward, but he is entertaining when you take him on missions. His banter with the other squad mates is also good.

This.
Plus, I always welcome more humans. I don't get the alien fetish.

He was brought to life by Prinze Junior, definitely. The voice seemed to fit, and Vega is really likable.

I didn't mind him. He actually reminded me of an ACTUAL marine that I know, and he wasn't a "stereotype" hispanic. I think I actually would have liked him a lot more if he had a personal quest not unlike a loyalty quest.

Vega was a terrible, boring character. Compared to the other new additions (EDI, Javik) it seems like he was a throwaway character added at the last second because a player, in fact, did not have a soldier class squadmate if Ashley died.

Jacob wasn't my favorite in ME2... However, his story did come full circle in ME3, and I quite enjoyed it... Although Female Shepards who romanced him did get royally screwed.

I find him extremely tollerable.

My only complaint is that he's shoe-horned in as a new character into a series in its third installment. A lot of his comments make him seem like an ignorant oaf since he doesn't know what the hell is going on. It makes it hard for me to really like.

However, that's not Vega's fault. The man himself is alright.
