Vega is a fine character.
Out of the Alliance squadmates, he's my favorite.
He's kind of like a younger, less experienced Shepard.

I liked James. Great in combat and FPJ did a great job with his character

Yeah, he's really funny and likeable imho. Bioware said they added him so new players could relate to someone who knew as much about the mass effect universe as they did. I don't really care about why they added him but I like him and other squaddies were off doing their own things (except for Samara idk why she couldn't join after her mission)

Also yes, the squadmate amount has to make sense.

I just finished a playthrough where everyone was dead from the previous games, and those who weren't I killed. In London Shepard was giving her epic speech to James, EDI and Liara.

Without James it'd have been just EDI and Liara, and since EDI doesn't gain her body until after Palaven, the game needed someone else to complete the squad.

they inserted Vega instead of those characters because for many people those characters could be dead, they needed to insert a squadmate that would not be dead on anyone's game.

Thanks! I'm a lil embarrassed that this didn't occur to me as a bit of an obvious reason for having him.

I wrote off Vega with little interest, partly 'cause I am not a Freddy Prince Jr fan at all, and never bothered. Had I found ME3 worth playing again, I would have used him and maybe discovered some of the dialogue some others had mentioned. I must say I wasn't impressed with his dialogue on the ship.

I like him a lot too.
And when I found out it was Prinze, I lol'ed becuase he graduated from the same high school I did a couple years after me.
We managed to produce him, and Neil Patrick Harris both!

I expected to vastly dislike him. I was pleasantly surprised when I didn't. Then I took him with me on almost every mission as my "tank". (First playthrough was an adept.) And now he ranks with my favourite Mass Effect characters.

All the Vega haters please take him with you for 1-2 times.

You only left him to rot because he looks like a terrible stereotype but he's actually a bro.

Trust me.

I wish we had him in earlier games instead of Jacob or Kaidan :D

What was his reasoning for calling Male Shepard Loco? For female Shepard, it was Lola, and it was based on his sister's very hot friend.

For some reason when i first met him I really wanted to dislkie him, I think it's because he just screamed stereotype, but he ended up being one of my favourite characters.

I don't dislike him, I just don't really understand his inclusion over character we already know (even if they weren't squad mates before).

Loco = crazy.

He sees MaleShep as definitely crazy. I mean he does eat rocket launchers, go on suicide missions and destroy Mass Relays on a regular basis.

He called male shep loco because hes never seen anyone do some of the crazy **** shepard has pulled off.
When grunt makes his cameo, he says grunt is even more loco than shepard, but consoles shepard that at least he looks better

When Bioware decided that 11 squadmates was too many and that they were reducing the number for ME3 so they could focus more on them individually, what made them think adding James Vega was a good idea?

This lunkhead must be the most the most shallow, sterotypical and empty headed character of the entire series.  His survivor's guilt backstory is a dud, the 'trying-so-hard-to-be-Hispanic-by-saying-Loco-a-dozen-times-daily' attitude is immediatly tiresome, and his sparring match with Shepard is embarrisingly bad (tho the reinactment Angry Joe does in his review is hillarious).  He manages to make Jacob look interesting!

What really irks me when Bioware was debating who was worthy for the very limited seating as a permanant squadmate in what they claimed was "the best game we have every made" they went through the list:
Wrex?.... no.  Thane?......no.  Mordin?....No.  Leigon?......no.  Samara?....no.  Vega?....yes.

Why?

And now, Vega gets his own anime
http://kotaku.com/58...eased-this-fall

Why?

Does anyone actually like this guy?

I found him interesting, although, Bioware/EA seemed a bit stressed to ship out the game - hence lack of proper dialogue, interactions are obvious. His interactions with Javik is great for instance. The side-story, with his guilt is great, but lacks in depth.. too bad.

note: when I found out that Freddie Prince Jr voiced Vega, I just went Brüno...

He's a nice guy and really good for tanking. The issue is less I think with the character and more with the fact that he occupied a space on a sparse roster, too few squad mates in ME3 in my opinion.
