I liked his character and his voice actor did a great job. I also liked his nicknaming policies
Shepard=loco
tali=sparks
anyone got more nicknames?

I really liked him. Not everyone in the galaxy is going to have an "interesting" backstory. Vega reminds me of some of my military friends. It makes sense that Shepard will have at least one "typical" jarhead on his crew.

He's a nice guy and really good for tanking. The issue is less I think with the character and more with the fact that he occupied a space on a sparse roster, too few squad mates in ME3 in my opinion.

Yes! I like Vega! He was fun to have around, had a lot of good lines and quips, made going down to the armoury to see him and Steve a whole lot of fun, and was a good contrast to the VS. (...)

This exactly. I've known guys from the military, and Vega is at least a reastic depiction.

Also yes, the squadmate amount has to make sense.
I just finished a playthrough where everyone was dead from the previous games, and those who weren't I killed. In London Shepard was giving her epic speech to James, EDI and Liara.
Without James it'd have been just EDI and Liara, and since EDI doesn't gain her body until after Palaven, the game needed someone else to complete the squad.

I believe that's the primary reason they included him. Much more so than being relatable to new players.
